It kills me to pay $5 a quart for yogurt, here. I make two batches a week. I also make sour cream. Our cream is around $6 a quart. Both get wrapped in towels and placed in a cast iron in a cold oven. I turn on the light and it is just enough heat to grow the cultures. Yogurt is so easy to make! Pineapple tidbits added is my favorite. Banana and honey added tastes like cheesecake to me. 😁

Wow. Your yogurt got nice and thick! =) Adding the jam looked delicious. I was just looking at our receipts and noticed that a quart of yogurt was the same price as the half gallon of milk. Yikes. Looks like making yogurt should be something I try! Thank for the video!

I also use a cooler - it's so nice to be able to make use of an otherwise necessary but underused item! I do this in glass jars though, with watertight plastic lids. Glass peanut butter jars work great for this.

I like to make Greek yogurt by placing my yogurt in a strainer covered with a coffee filter, then utilizing the whey in baking. Thanks for the inspiration, I need to make another batch👍🏻

Did you know that you can freeze yogurt in small containers and then take them out when you want to make homemade yogurt. You have to let them defrost and come up to room temperature.

Thanks! I did not know this. I freeze many many foods, that i buy at a good sale price,. but make my own yogurt. I'll try freezing that too! I think i need to invest in a large freezer soon.

I tried several times to freeze it, but my stuff always defrosts to liquid (which I keep for making cake, bread, etc, I can’t waste anything). I’ll try again

180’F (scalded milk temp) is reached when tiny bubbles form around the perimeter of the milk and cling to the side of the pot If one desires thick yogurt, put it in a large container, put a clean knee high stocking over it, and put a lid on that has holes poked through ( I use a hot nail and melt holes in it). Lay the container on the side, and let the whey drain off. The cooler is a great idea, thanks for the video

That was interesting! I've never made yogurt. Mother used to made a type of creme fraiche by mixing a small amount of cultured whole buttermilk in heavy cream and leaving it on her kitchen counter 12 to 15 hours (overnight) Edit: she loved a white pizza (creme fraiche, mozzarella/parmesan, mushrooms and spinach)
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills Год назад
Yup, I used to have a serious issue with red sauce on pizza when I was a child...mother was kind enough to make one especially for me "without"
