The Town of Catawba never grew; but had the chance a few times. There was a factory back in the late 80's wanted to build in behind the Volunteer Fire Department you saw down the street across the bridge. The mayor at the time Ed Elmore balked on one thing. It would add another traffic light to the main street about where the Fire Department is now... The old Fire Department was where the Town Hall is now. I never knew why the Mayor was so down on making the Town stay small. The Tax shop you looked at was the Barber Shop, his daughter runs the Tax shop. Her Dad and the Mayor Along with Old man Korn, actually had invested heavily on the upper end of Lake Norman just below Lookout Dam; to build a Country Club. They actually built the Country Club itself, but with the restrictions of the Community it was very slow to even take off. The land lots were $250,000 and then you had to build a $350,000 minimum house on that property. Sounds easy enough. But for people around here or anyone actually moving, nah $700,000 for a home was unheard of in this area back in the late 80's. This was even before Rock Barn Country Club became a thought. Still they had a thinking that there was never to be a fast food restaurant or any chain stores in the town. Claimed that was how the residents wanted it. Sure much tax money went into their pockets just like nowadays.... The Green Lyf across from Cindy's used to be the Police Department. Which was a Bank for about 30 years before that. The building beside Green Lyf used to be Korn's restaurant in the 70's and 80's way before Cindy's. It was way bigger business wise than Cindy's. Korn's most likely made a million or so easily over the course of 40 years. The gas station on the corner is still the same building from the 60's. Peoples bank used to be where the new building is on the corner of the main street when you turn back to the town hall. Catawba Station is what was supposed to be the Catawba Country Club. This is where the Country Club was built. It was later sold but torn down and a different house put in place. Funny how 25 years will change how people use money, tear a $500,000 house down so they can sell the property. www.google.com/maps/@35.7096536,-81.0624374,213m/data=!3m1!1e3 As you can see, only 10 houses have made it to the property of the original Country Club area. The Golf Course was to buy up property down the river past the housing area.
Thanks for this video. I'm looking for a building to use for a home/workshop and a couple of those buildings you talked about are on a real estate site. I don't currently live in the southeast so unfortunately I can't check it out in person at the moment. But videos like this one are of great value in this situation. So thanks again.
