Why do the shiniest new ideas always come when we're already drowning in projects? Whatever the reason, this one is sticking so I'm going for it.

I've been working on a story forever. I have at least three main characters. My ears perked up when you mentioned multiple P.O.V.'s. My problem is every idea I come up with I want to add to the story. I'm thinking of Heinlein's "Methuselah's Children. Intertwined short stories. Another is that I'm undisciplined, my filing is non-existent. When inspiration hits I get it out and it gets jumbled in my desk or wherever.

Man I love seeing your editing process, it inspires me so much and gives me the excitement I need to get back to my own editing. 😁 I was wondering, though, for the book packager bit, you basically come up with the outline and all that for the author you choose to write it, right? But i was wondering if you choose the character names, or leave it up to the author. Because for me a character's name is a huge part of who they are. Someone named "Matt" will be a completely different character to a "Ryan", and I've had stories (especially the one I'm working on for querying) that had a very specific outline using a name for one of the key characters that I was a bit so-so on that actually changed drastically when I realised that isn't the character's name. They got a complete overhaul in personality, age, and motive simply because I found their real name. If you get what i mean. So it's made me wonder about the authors you guys choose to work on those stories, if they're given a set name and go with it, or they can change it or gave free choice from the outset (like the outline just saying MC rather than any name). Also, do you find this an issue when doing ghostwriting, or have you been at it long enough that you can easily write the right type of character for the story regardless of the name you're given? (Though I would assume your own stories and characters matter in that regard, like Nil.) Anyway, thank you for the update, and the inspiration. I hope everything goes well with all you've got going on. Also, those shots of the garden were beautiful, I'm glad you and Rosa pup have one to enjoy.

That's a great question! I think it depends on the packager and the project, but I can tell what I did: I named the characters but told the auditioning writers they were free to change them, along with genders and other identities if they wanted. I really try to focus on plot and let the author bring what they want into the characters, if that makes sense. As for ghostwriting, the client chooses the names (unless they ask me to do it, usually for side characters). I totally get what you mean about it feeling like a personality change, and that's true for me with my own books - but for whatever reason, it doesn't bother me with ghostwriting! Hope you have a great weekend, K! :)

Hi Michelle! Hope you're doing well! Not sure I realized you moved, but I guess the fact your usual built-in writing cubby from previous videos is gone. That was such a neat little setup. How are you and Rosa enjoying Seattle? Hopefully it's not as warm as Texas. (But who knows, since a lot of the world seems to be on fire.) Another great video! Cheers :D

I really enjoyed the first season of The After Party. The second season isn't working as well for me so far, and just last night my girlfriend and I agreed the most recent episode was just bad TV. I hope it picks up a lot in the last few eps. Only Murders in the Building just started its third season. A few reviews I saw and read all said it was a premise that didn't need a third season and the new eps weren't that good. -- but we really enjoyed esp 1-2!

New idea! That's so exciting, Michelle. We're basically brain twins right now. I just had a new thriller idea, too, and spent all day yesterday outlining it. I was amazed at how deep I went into the outline (about 6k words) in so little time. My brain definitely need a distraction from my current project and this new idea gave me the breather I needed. The new idea is more of a whodunit which is fun because what I'm currently writing is a psychological thriller (series), so it was really cool to explore this genre through a different lens. I don't feel compelled to draft the new story now, but I really love what I ended up outlining. The next time I need a break from my series, I will probably come back to this new idea and take a weekend to fast draft the outline. I can see this as my go-to project when I need a breather. In the meantime, I'm back to my series feeling a lot more energized. TL;DR: I've gone from being afraid of shiny ideas to realizing their utility. IMO, they are VERY beneficial for writers who need a break from their workload. 👍

That's so cool! It's funny how focusing on a different genre and/or part of the process (like outlining vs drafting) can feel like such a break from current projects. but I agree about SNIs being useful for exactly that reason!

A thriller does sound like a fun project. I want to try one myself, specifically psychological, but then fantasy elements crept in. Currently it is sitting in my OneNote idea binder, waiting to see what happens with it. 😂 Out of curiosity, how are you liking your book packaging job now that you've been working in that area for a few months? It certainly seems like a fun one, since you get to play with brainstorming elements for most of your actual work tasks. Edit: Also, preordered _Waddle._ 😉

Thank you so much!!! :) I know what you mean about spec elements creeping in! LOL I love the packager job! It's really fun to develop ideas with a team. And NGL, I kind of love passing it on to a writer instead of writing it myself 😂

I keep a running file of ideas, where I'll fill a page just like you with the high concept, story beats, character, etc. So I know that when one project is finished, I can thumb through semi-formed ideas and pick the one I want to do next! Often, they'll combine over time into a new idea altogether, but they're never lost. :)

Super cool to hear about the new thriller idea! I've heard lots of writers recently say they're starting with a book's pitch before getting deeper into outlining and I think it makes so much sense! My current project is with beta readers and I have 3 new ones I've been toying with...I might try the same pitch approach to decide which one to go to next!!

Do it!! I really think it helps solidify the ideas and figure out which one you're most excited about! Some ideas kind of fizzle once you really get into them, you know?

First of all, the title of your book is adorable! Did you come up with it or was it your editor? Also, finally someone somewhere knows about The Afterparty! How come no one else is watching it? I'm currently watching season 2 and loving it.
