Hi, guys~ Here is the canard STL files link. However, this file will require a lot of shaping after printing to a 3D printer. I am a beginner in modeling. Please, understand it. ECO-LAP Studio i dont think the majority of the audience fully understand weave techniques and understand how its more then just “glass fiber like” Materials might be cheap cause “duuh” its only carbon atoms in a spesific structure, but its the whole process and time to stack layers perfectly and strategic. First of all i would like to thank you for amazing content. I gave making 3d printed canards a try. Don't plan to cover them in carbon cloth for now, but if i will i for sure will follow your videos. They were printed at 6mm thickness with high infill %. Think i should have gone for 3-4 mm thickness. What thickness did you use for canards? Did you use 3d scanner to transfer the part of bumper to fusion?
@ECOLAPStudio
@ECOLAPStudio 4 года назад
Hello, Buddy! The canard I made is about 5mm thick. The genuine BMW Canard was about 5 mm thick. So I made it 5mm. I think the thickness of 3-4mm is also good. I do not have a 3D scanner. I designed the basic shape, printed the drawing on paper and checked the points to be modified compared to the actual car bumper. The modified canard was very consistent with the shape of the bumper. I hope you helpful.

Wonder how the filament will react after being skinned. I was imagining you would use the 3d print as a form to make a negative mold then make the canards out of that.
@ECOLAPStudio
@ECOLAPStudio 4 года назад
Hello, Buddy! The filament may be slightly deformed by heat. But so far, my canard hasn't found the strain in my eyes. I think it may be prevented from being deformed by skinned carbon fiber and epoxy resin. But I am not sure. If I had a SLA type 3D printer, I would have made a negative mold. However, I am using an FDM (Filament) type 3D printer. The output of the FDM type 3D printer requires a lot of processing because the surface is not smooth. I think it is not suitable for making negative molds. Thank you for watching.
@fredpinczuk7352
@fredpinczuk7352 4 года назад
It depends on the base (foundation) material used. PLA will soften exposed to the sun in a warm region (AZ, TX USA kind of weather). PETG Will hold higher temps but can be flexible all depends on printing details (infills, layer numbers, ect). ABS is the best choice, but the worst material to work with. Its temperamental and toxic in in-house environments. Making a negative mold as you suggest is a very good way, you simply need to print the mold understanding the pressure exerted during vacuuming. The carbon layers can then be sandwiched in with layers of fiberglass as well to add rigidity, or ultimately even a very thin layer of folder aluminum in between. Or even more exotic. You can 3D print a HTPLA-Carbon using gyroid infill (zero bottom or top layer). And use that as an insert in between layers of carbon film. Similar material to this. www.proto-pasta.com/collections/carbon-fiber-composite-htpla/HTPLA

@@fredpinczuk7352 but you could use annealed PLA or you could use ASA, the CF will deliver the strenght.. but that pla will shrink in one dimension so you need to take in consideration while printing by roughly 7-10 percent
@fredpinczuk7352
@fredpinczuk7352 4 года назад
@@archeebookingagent1909 Yes, but you have to anticipate the shrink on three plains (X,Y,Z) and on three potential different surface area. The chances of getting it "shrunk" perfectly will be purely by trial and error. But that's the beauty of 3D printing. You can keep making parts till you get it right.

Of course, if you give me your email address, I'll send you a stl file. Installing on the F30 can be done by grinding the canard with sandpaper.

Great work! Why did you use Epoxy Gelcoat for the first, sticky layer instead of normal Epoxy?
@ECOLAPStudio
@ECOLAPStudio 4 года назад
Hello, Buddy! The reason for using epoxy gelcoat is to strongly attach the carbon fiber. In addition, the epoxy gel coat has a very high viscosity and does not flow down. I hope you helpful.

ECO-LAP Studio Studio Thanks a bunch for your quick&detailed answer! Do you mean that the Gelcoat sticks stronger to the pla permanently? Or do you mean that the Gelcoat becomes more sticky than epoxy to apply the CF?

Ok hold on. Did you take fiber out off the mold? Or you just wrapped the mold in CF?

Whats the 3D printing material? We have problems after carbonskinning, cause first layers are peeling off.
