Oh you are a sweetheart Viv! I've been hearing your name a bit the last few days, Joy bernheart (I think thats her name) is raving madly about you lol. I felt the interview went well but the feedback was pretty lethal and in hindsight the job wasnt right for me. Glad you liked the coat x
I think your coat looks amazing of course it is in my favorite colors I like the three-quarter sleeves I really do it’s in proportion with the rest of the coat thank you for sharing your experience!
HI Sue, thanks for watching - I think acknowledging my own failings as well as the patterns is really important. I dont like to be negative but I feel an honest review is important x
Thanks for the review. I've had this pattern on my wish list for a while now. In the end it looks very good on you. I like the dress you are wearing. That fabric is beautiful!
Hi LB thanks for watching and commenting. Thank you for the compliments. The fabric is a scuba, I cant remember where it was from as it was in my stash but I do get quite a lot of compliments from the fabric I think its so vibrant. x
Your toile may not have come out as planned but the coat did look good on you so the style is good. I bought some fabric for a coat last year or the year before but honestly cannot decide what I want to make with it style wise. Thanks for an honest review it is great to know things people don't get along with as well as the good bits x
Thanks - a few people have said it suits me which is nice to hear, as I have absolutely no clue about my personal style. I know what you mean regarding the fabrics, I have some fabrics gathering dust in my stash for coats too (twills mainly). Glad you appreciated the not entirely positive review! x
Hi Claire, even though you had some struggles, I think you did an amazing job in the end, considering that the instructions were not very clear. I think you would definitely iron out the problems that you had if you tried another one and it looked great on you. This is an honest and clear review and it's definitely helped me decide that this would be too tricky for my first coat but a good one for when my skills have developed. Thank you so much Claire for such an honest review and I look forward to seeing more great things from you 😁👌💝😘
Hi Sally, thanks sew (!) much for your comment. I'm really pleased that it has been of some help to others and good luck with making your first coat. Thanks for watching x
Thank you for sharing this. I was surprised when I saw you in the coat as it looked very well on you and definitely suits you. For the hem, could you not unpick it at the bottom and make two separate hems? I don't know if that would be possible but if you could sort that then you might really start to like the coat.
Hi Eileen. Thanks for watching and commenting. Ah thank you for your compliments. It's gone down really well. Yes, I may unpick the hem and do as two seperate ones, I think that will work out better. x
You know, you can save the coat with new lining and a few tweaks. Was your back collar upside down? One thing I promised myself early on in my sewing was to never continue upset. I have had a LOT of upsets because I learned when there were few books and no internet and no help. I was so clueless. Put a black lining in the coat and if you have more fabric (or add gray or black woolish fabric) or the scraps from the cut off, make a cuffed ending on your arms or put a seam there as you would with a tee shirt neck band, grade it and top stitch to compress the bulk. You can do it! :) Sending you lots of love!
Thank you Milli , this was so long ago now I've lost interest in it. Its still hanging in my wardrobe though so I should do something with it. Perhaps I did put the collar on upside down, that would make sense! I knew a few were not happy with the drafting of this coat, its a shame I love the style!
@@Penguinandpear You never know sweetheart, maybe one day you will wake up and decide to give that coat the one two punch with your machine! LOL! Sending you lots of love and many thanks! :)
HI Claire, Thanks for the review. I also struggle with coat hems so I totally feel you pain! Like you said, we all learn from the mistakes we make and next time it will turned out better right? Also, after a while you'll forget about the mistakes and wear the coat loads. Thanks for sharing your experience!
HI Fany! When I made the Sopporo, it had a similar hem and that worked out well; I think I needed to read the pattern ahead of starting, which is something I am really bad at. Yeah, I'll wear the coat until my next one is made lol... I may trim off the bottom of the hem and re-hem the shell and lining seperately... thanks for watching! x
I have had my eye on this one since it came out, so I was glad you reviewed it. Also, I think we may be sewing twins, because I also don't always do my toiles justice like I would if I were using my more beloved fabrics. I always regret it in the end, but I cant seem to stop myself from abusing my poor muslin fabrics!!! I think it turned out great in the end and you looked great in it! Maybe if you let it rest in the closet for a while, you will pull it out later and fall in love.
It's hard isnt it when you just want to whizz through it and get to the good fabric lol. Thank you for the compliment. I think I may chop off the bottom and re-hem seperately, which should get rid of the ripples... but you know what its like making amendments once the thing is complete... I have a whole bin of items in the queue lol x
Bless you Claire, shame you had so many struggles with it, but I think it's turned out not bad at all and I do like the style on you! I'm definitely going to check out sians sleeve tutorial, so thanks for that! Looking forward to seeing what you make next! 😊 Xx
HI Gem! Thanks for watching! A lot of people seem to think it suits my shape which is good to know as I am clueless with this kind of thing! Ah the sleeve thing is so much easier than hand stitching and more secure too I think! x
Aw - you've had a bit of a nightmare - kudos for persevering. The coat does really suit you so maybe another try when you've had some space away/ It's so frustrating when the image we have in our head doesn't quite make it to the finished object.
Catching up. You make me laugh when you just do your own thing and things turn out ok! I think the shorter sleeves will do fine with a long sleeve top. And I love the lining ! 💕
Well, major learning curve, but you made it work! Sewing for only 4 years is not very long! Honestly you are trying some really challenging parts of sewing. Your major challenge might be learning how to fit your body, as opposed to perfection in each particular part of the pattern. Hope your shoulder improves soon! Have you heard back about your interview?
I guess it is not long if you've been sewing all your life, but I feel its long enough for people to feel you wouldnt make mistakes. The sewing world (especially Instagram) is full of posts with peoples amazing achievements, which can sometimes lead to new sewists feeling inferior so I wanted to highlight, all abilities can make mistakes....I've made a couple of coats before, but this is by far the most challenging one to date. Thanks re shoulder - I didn't get the job but in hindsight it wasnt right for me x
Penguin and Pear Dressmaking Clair, please don't be so hard on yourself. I've been sewing for 55 years, still make mistakes, even stupid ones. I think experience just tells you "I've just made that same stupid mistake again. Ahrg! The experience ,maybe is being able to fix your problem without trashing the project. I sew professionally so that doesn't always help either. Keep sewing, dear. Good for the soul.
@@christinewhitehair6402 Thanks for your comment Christine. I sometimes think I could never sew professionally my perfectionism would drive me mad and I'd never make any profit because I keep redoing everything haha! x
Hi Paige, I probably wouldnt chose it for a first coat but then again you seem entirely capable so maybe you'd have a better experience than me? What other coats do you have on your hit list?
Oh my goodness. It actually is...could be..a good style for you!! But the Popeye comment rolled me into the floor laughing. Please, never quit being honest!!
I know you've made it so the flaws and the struggle stick out to you when you wear it, but I think it looks really cute on you, even the sleeve length. Also I had to laugh at "shoot me now." I know that feeling all too well. 😉
