I turned myself into Madame de Pompadour. Have you or do you want to make a Robe à la Française? Sack back gown? Saque Gown? Details on how to use both the American Duchess Guide to Eighteenth Century Dressmaking AND the American Duchess Simplicity Pattern 8578 to create a Robe à la Française of your own. I'm short-waisted and short in general, so I give tips and mistakes to avoid for short-waisted humans who want to make this dress. I show you how I make a mock-up, fit it, fit the gown, problem-solve, modify the trim in the pattern to suit my own designs, sew with cats, and create my favorite historical costume of 2020!
This video is not sponsored by American Duchess or anyone else. American Duchess is a small business that supplies the costuming community with historical shoes, stockings, buckles, books, patterns, and research/knowledge, and I really appreciate their efforts and the pretty things they bring to us historical costumers.

Oh, I'm so glad! I read that chapter in the book so many times before I got up the gumption to think I could make one. I am here to say, it can be done, and you can do it!!

This video is so insightful, especially with the fact that I’m also short waisted. This also made me feel less intimidated for this project. Thank you!!

I adore this! I think you’ve motivated me to go back to working on my Saque gown (even though I have miles of piecing to do before I can even properly start). This color is GORGEOUS and the Pearl flowers are lovely!

Congratulations! The dress (and you ) is stunning!!! I think this is a very useful tutorial and will use it when I am in the mood for my own RALF. Please continue your wonderful videos. Also, thanks for being real - historically adequate us a great expression. Nothing wrong with polyester thread, machine sewing, etc. Each person has her own demands on time, budget, stress, and skill set. 😊

Greetings from Australia! WowWowWow!!! Such a beautiful dress!! Well done! Hope you have worn it many times since you made it two years ago. I am so jealous that you have two historical societies to belong to as there is nothing like that here...... that I know of anyway.:)

We all get a bit paranoid about getting things perfect and really if people are getting so close too you to see the mistakes they are too close

It looks so lovely, just like a beautiful cake with icing! It is eye candy to be sure! I hope to start on my gown soon(after stays are finished), so thank you so much for posting this! It shows that with lots of patience and perseverance that a RALF is really achievable, and it didn't take you a year! lol. So how is the sizing on this pattern? Is is true to size or did you have to go down a size? I always measure my pattern pieces, but was wondering. My last historic Simplicity pattern I made, I normally wear a 14 or 16, but the 12 fit me pretty well once I lengthened the pieces. P.S. we have all the same reference books!
@AJaneiteSews
@AJaneiteSews 3 года назад
I was right between the two size packets according to my measurements but I think the 12 was a bit large, I had to take it in, and I wish I had measured the pattern pieces!

I meant to ask... did you fray check your pinked edges or do you not expect to wear the gown often enough to threaten the edges? If I had a gown like this, I would wear it every time I felt grumpy. 😁
@AJaneiteSews
@AJaneiteSews 3 года назад
I want to wear it all the time. I did not put fray check on before adding the trim to the gown and I'm hoping I won't regret that. I did order some to test on some scrap fabric and see if it changes the color too much or not. If not, as I often do, I will go back and do something I should have done earlier, lol.
