After planning, researching, and constructing support garments I'm embarking on my biggest historical costume project yet - drafting, sewing, and trimming a 1770s, silk robe a la francaise gown. In this video, I assemble the petticoat and figure out the basics of making a new style of dress from scratch all without a pattern.

Great work. It's impressive to watch people take one these impressive gowns. Also it makes me feel less alone when people show the bits where they struggled, hesitated or realised they did something they didn't need to do. So thank you for showing us that. Good luck for the rest of the dress. I look forward to watching the process.

Encouragement: You're doing it! Keep on keeping on. You're doing a great job troubleshooting & solving any issues you're running into (I particularly enjoy your videos as I enjoy how you speak about these moments, choices, details, and your thought process - thank you); the journey/details of making is most interesting & such a large part of every garment's story even though, mostly, those parts aren't at all or very well documented. Your ralf is looking great and it's going to be stunning.

I scored 15 yards of weird ‘80’s chintz at an estate sale. I’ll be making a sack dress, a mock up to figure this out. It’s a brain twister! You’re doing great, I’m sure actual mantua makers hit snags too.

I have to pull my machine(s) apart and clean out the dust and crud, and then lube, every two or three projects to avoidfeed/stitch length problems. OMG those are some honkin' huge pleats!

LOVE THE STICKER! On your sewing machine. I've sewed for 60 years. It's good to see someone who can hand sew as well as machine sew.

Thanks for the video tutorial & thanks for showing Your reference source book, although I'm making the gown in 1/6 scale for 11.5" Barbie, it will help a lot. Having a tough time with finding an actual tororial for Grand panier but piecing it together from other videos & now this book will help (hopefully) too I also have a hiztorical costume with patterns for Batbie book). What a coincidence, right now I’m working on my robe a la Français. This was good to watch. Looking forward to the rest. I am using the Simplicity pattern because I trust Abby Cox judgement in her cooperation with Simplicity. I also make use of the same patterns of fashion book as you do for further reference to understand the differences etc. The fabric you use is gorgeous!!!

I‘ve always avoided making a Française since they seem complicated and I’m not about that life lol, but kudos to you for tackling this challenge and for doing a great job at it! It’s looking beautiful so far and I am sure it will be even more so once finished 👍🏻

I used a combination of the pattern from Pegee of Williamsburg and measured drawings from the Fashion Institute of the Metropolitan Museum back in the mid 70's. I found it was easier to use a solid color drapery weight silk. I still own it but *sigh* no longer fit in it ;)
