Yeah, plants are taller in high budget, but they look healthier (aside from the carpet) in the low budget.
@jawjagrrl
@jawjagrrl 2 года назад
I think they are both looking pretty good! Perhaps in a future update you could tall about the overall difference in color between the two, which I assume is the light and not the plants themselves? The high budget looks much more "blue" green vs the more yellow-green appearance of the plants in the low budget setup. The reds also look quite different, just curious!

Same here. I even like the more yellowish color over the high budget light color.

I love your calm attitude about the algae buildup in both tanks - that is a lesson in itself! I would freak out, but you have a very level-headed 'let's just work the problem' attitude. A brown algae monster, then, after the clean up...all good. Excellent class in the calmness of aquascaping.

Seeing mistakes are often more useful than seeing success stories. And there is even more value in seeing how someone takes a mistake and turns it into success. Don't be embarrassed to show your mistakes, embrace them as a learning experience. So long as a channel is putting out sound information, I'm happy to commend there efforts. And your channel is a great example of someone who is passionate about the hobby, and who tries to provide useful information. Keep up the good work Sir, and best of luck with your tank trial.

Hey MJ I really love your channel and have recommended several of my friends to it. I was wondering if you could do an experiment of "CO2+Low light" versus "High Light with no CO2" to see if CO2 or Light is the limiting step? Another follow-up experiment might be to compare "High Light for 6 hours+CO2" versus "Low Light for 9 hours+CO2" to see if a longer duration of low light can compensate for lack of high light. If we can overcome the expensive cost of lighting by using longer periods of budget lights + CO2, it will help with aquascaping using the Biorb and Fluval tanks that look nice but typically comes with poor lighting and very few options to upgrade.

I’m rooting for the low budget as well!! I am biased though I only have lower budget tanks. I would be really curious to see what the tanks look like at the end with the lights swapped, or potentially just with the same light on both tanks? Only for color comparison! It would be interesting to see the coloring variations in the plants between the two tanks after they have grown in different setups.

There's no real way to avoid backflow on a CO2 line, you must use a checkvalve. This happens because CO2 inside the difusser and line will start dissolving into aquarium water. So pressure inside the line will start to drop and draw aquarium water. You could install your checkvalve closer to the tank or even closer to the diffuser to limit the amount of backflow.

Some plants that are exposed to more intense light grow shorter, and when exposed to less intense light they grow taller becase they are searching for more light. So the reinecki actually is doing better in the high budget tank.

Great video - really intriguing! Can I ask how you manage to maintain consistent pressure in your DIY CO2 system? I can never quite get it to build up enough to run through a diffuser - I've resorted to placing the end of the tubing in the mouth of the water pump intake. As the bubbles come out they get sucked through the impellor and out into the tank - so they end up very fine but at surface level. I imagine it's a combination of ensuring the system is air-tight, the tubing isn't over-long and the diffuser isn't too deep under water. Any ideas? Love your channel btw
@MJAquascaping

Yeah it has to be really air tight otherwise you don't get enough pressure for a regular diffuser. I think that's what matters the most.

Great video Mark-Jan! When you are working with a new tank and fresh aquasoil, do you use any liquid fertilizers? How long do you normally wait before starting to use fertilizers? After I experienced problems with the integrated check valve from the Tropica nano diffusor, I settled on one of these www.amazon.de/gp/product/B06XZPGYK4 (Aqua & Co Co² metal Check valve). My experience is that especially these cheap plastic ones often cannot fully prevent, that co² diffuses/draws the water back into the pipe over night. The same goes at least for my bubble counter which also states it has an 'integrated check valve' - yeah that did not age well. The suggested valve is surely a massive thing but I did not want to take any risks of water getting into my co² pressure reducer or near that. Great Video as always, love your pragmatic style
