I Made a Tiny Snail Aquarium 500 Days Ago. How Is It?

It's been a year and half or 500 days specifically since I made the "DIY Micro All-In-One Snail Aquarium." A lot has happened since then and I wanted to circle back on this setup to see how it's doing today. Nano setups in general are more challenging for a number of reasons: plants fill in faster, they're cumbersome to maintain, and conditions are generally more unstable. All of that in mind, how did this setup fare all this time later?

Sorry for skipping last week, but as I said in the community tab, I completely lost my voice and only now is it starting to come back. A sinus infection brought on by allergy season beat me up! Anyway, I wanted to take a proper and updated look at the DIY Micro All-In-One Snail Aquarium in this week’s video. I still haven’t put it in its rightful place in my office yet and I figured now was a good time because it’s been exactly 500 days since I built it. What do you think of its progress thus far? Let me know and have a great weekend SerpaSquad!

Bladder snails are pretty good at keeping things clean from my experience. I put some in a small pot of Lucky Bamboo filled with pebbles and water after it started to have some gross growth. The snails cleaned everything under the water and have kept it clean since with no maintenance except adding water.

Your videos are literally therapy to me. Anytime I am having a panic attack or anxiety attack I immediately reach for my phone and pull up one of your videos. Its a combination of the calmness in your voice, the beautiful filming/editing, and pulling attention to little details (similar to the 54321 technique) your videos never fail to pull me out of the deep end. Thank you Tanner!

If you are having a bad panic attack and it's a bad one, a all cold shower works very good. Basically puts you in shock and puts you into survival mode/ pushing panic away as there's more important things to focus on.

Have you considered simply posting updates on your builds when you're working on larger projects? For example, instead of feeling pressured to finish a build by Saturday morning, if you need another week on it, simply have periodical updates. Videos like these ones are not only highly enjoyable, but they also help a lot with learning about how to take care of various critters. I'd be very interested in how the saltwater tank is doing, even if nothing much has changed since you got it - on the contrary, it would be quite helpful to other folks to see how slow the progress on some of these mini-ecosystems is, to normalize the fact that you don't magically get a mature tank out of the box, that corals need time to open/grow, that shrimp don't just start spawning 24/7, etc.

This little tank inspired me to build my first aquarium, which basically was a scaled up version of this one (10 gallon). It had the three compartments and all that, it was pretty cool but the actual water volume area was small so I ended up dismantling it so I can keep fish. Thank you for the update on this little tank, keep up the great work!

I've had my snails in a perspex column (d=15cm, 35cm high) since 2019. Along with the amphipods who hop around the bottom and various creatures who hichhike on vegetation updates, my snails are more interesting than I would have expected before I put their aquarium together. I love them.

Glad you're recovering your voice and feeling better, Tanner. So the snails just kept chugging along, doing what snails do, and the odd little container turned out to need remarkably little maintenance. I like small setups and I get why you build it, but a vase with some pothos on a window sill... and some aquatic plants and snails, some gravel at the bottom and some moss or similar woul've done the trick too with much less effort and no electricity. I have a couple of those setups running for years on end and they look fab. No water changes, not even snail food. What looks especially nice are Myriophyllum. You can start growing them underwater but they will grow their way out and they look really nice hanging out after.

Really!? I have such a big problem with mulm in one of my tanks. Could overfeeding also lead to mulm?
@777midori
@777midori Год назад
@@sharkloving_aquarist yeah for sure overfeeding is adding to it. Decomposing food that’s uneaten and more waste from the fish since they’re being fed more. I have sand and Malaysian trumpet snails that do a great job of pulling the mulm down in to the substrate for the plants to use.

Looking back at this video, tiny tanks like this might also even be plausible to house some varieties of aquatic insects if they're small enough. Like maybe a small water scorpion, caddisfly larvae, water boatmen, or some of the exceptionally small varieties of diving beetles. 🤔
