Soo the hem of this skirt is the size of a house. And a lot of it is hand sewn.
Pattern is Vogue 1931 / V1931. It is a reprint of a pattern from 1957.
Dress is made from velvet, tulle, taffeta, and bed sheets.
Want to thank the kitties for helping?

Anyone who uses Vogue patterns knows the motto “Vogue is Vague” They assume you’re a tailor or seamstress with haute couture experience and know what they mean I have altered many of their patterns If it makes you happy and it fits Hallelujah !!! It’s gorgeous!!

A vintage vogue pattern was the third pattern I ever sewed with. It was painful.

The dress came out absolutely gorgeous!! I think that the velvet came out really pretty too, and plus, in the image to me at least, it looked like the top of the dress was made out of velvet.

Thank you! I thought so too, but velvet wasn't listed as one of the recommended fabrics.

I recognized your Wilcox & Gibbs machine before you mentioned it! I did a lot of sewing on my grandma's Wilcox &Gibbs.I still have it. It still sews like a dream. after 130 years. I wouldn't trade it for a million bucks! And it does have a gathering attachment! Nothing EVER gets out of whack!

My daughter's prom gowns ('93 & '94) were almost 300" in circumference at the hem (I made both). Many high schools still have cotillion-style proms, with hooped gowns. Your evening gown is lovely...and I admire your tenacity with a Vogue pattern. They've never been user-friendly for me. Blessings!!!!

This dress is very beautiful. I am amazed at your skill and patience. Please remember we are our own worst critic. Also I agree with the other commenter, the pattern illustration definitely looks like velvet to me. I really like the darker colour. I am the farthest from a seamstress. But, I recall a cocktail dress my Mother had from around this time. The top had some odd "stiffening" along the darts(?correct wore). And their was boning angled from under the armpit area. Kind of reminds me of the pattern you showed. I am sure it is not the same. I remember Mom saying it was "damn" uncomfortable but made a gorgeous silhouette.
@ViktoriaAnastasia
@ViktoriaAnastasia 2 месяца назад
Thank you! I didn't mention it in the video, but another reason why I changed the boning was because I was worried it would be uncomfortable.

That was pretty impressive! I've been sewing for (eep!) over half a century (I started as a kid), and as the granddaughter of two women who worked in sewing factories, I can tell you that there are many times where you "diverge" from the pattern instructions (read: when they don't make sense, do what does). You can use your machine to help you gather rather than doing it by hand. Since you had so much fabric, the way to do it would be to sew for a bit, leaving long ends, then sew a slightly overlapping seam, again leaving long ends. Keep doing these (no more than 2-3 feet long) on the top of your skirt.and you'll get through the gathering MUCH faster. Sewing with that old a sewing machine makes things difficult. I initially learned to sew on a machine like that, and it was frustrating that I could only do straight stitching. You may want to plunk down a few bucks for a cheap machine that'll do zigzag and machine blind hemstitches to make your life easier (even though, if you're me, you often wind up having to rip out a few stitches here and there so nothing shows). I was able to get one from JoAnn for around $100.

One quick tip when sewing velvets try using a walking foot. They don't need a zig zag. Rufflers don't need a zig zag either. I really applaud the vintage treadle machine. Good for You!!!!!

The hand sewing was really worth it, it looks so pretty! I am curious though, what if the pattern is onto something with the boning placement... I think trying it out will lead to a much better understanding of why they made it like that 🤔
@ViktoriaAnastasia
@ViktoriaAnastasia 2 месяца назад
I have seen boning like that on some dresses, as it can help with the shape, but I have never personally seen it on a couture style, full ballgown. I don't think that style boning would have been able to support the heavy velvet overbodice and pannier anyway so I'm glad I changed it when I had the chance!

I don't know if you can but when I had issues getting a back closing top like that Id put it on sideways and button it then turn it to the back where it belongs. Did you try that??? Excuse me if you did. I'm not even saying you could have. Oh I love the style lines of the skirt. It looks so elegant, like the 1930's stuff just doesn't have the same pizzazz that it seemed to have had all those decades ago and that wasn't even a bias cut !
@ViktoriaAnastasia
