For those of you suggesting a rotary cutter, my reply: I personally don't like a rotary cutter for curves, especially some of those inner tight curves. Also, with how many layers I'm going through and the angle that you need to be at to use a rotary cutter well, it would have been a bit of a challenge. But, I do use a rotary cutter whenever possible! In my personal opinion (and having cut out as much as I did) scissors were definitely the best option!

I'm not sure if this is helpful, but there are also electric rotary cutters that can get through more layers, more easily. It doesn't solve the issue of going around curves necessarily, but it could be worth a shot :)

The jokes were great, and the ruffle set-up was pure mad genius. However, I just realized after you mentioned getting confirmation on that fishing line in the hem ... That is, the dress was originally made by a team working together to get it done and you are doing it all on your own. So any sanity you have left after the whole process is incredible. Very impressive all around!

Omgosh! Yes the one flaw to this stroke of genius setup 🙈
@ashlynalingh
@ashlynalingh 3 года назад
I would describe the way a flounce falls like this: the inner edge of the circle has a shorter circumstance than the outer edge. When straightened there is extra fabric between the outer edge and the inner edge due to the difference in the circumferences. So when you straighten the inner edge the extra fabric has to go and hang somewhere so it creates a bunch of waves and curls.
@a.j.4644
@a.j.4644 3 года назад
Yes, that's why the fabric frills at all. The reason the degree of frilliness differs between the circles of different radii is that any measurement, say, one foot of frill, measured along the outer edge, covers a different number of degrees of a circle. The arc differs, as the circumference (2r*pi) differs. If the diameter (2r) equals 10 inches, one foot is 12/10pi * 360 degrees = 0.382*360 = 137.5 degrees, a piece of fabric whose outer edge has enough curvature to cover just over 1/3 of a circle. If the diameter doubles to 20 inches, one foot of frill = 12/20pi*360 = 68.75 degrees, or a bit over 1/6 of a circle, meaning less curved, and thus less voluminous frills. HTH!
@BellaMaesDesigns
@BellaMaesDesigns 3 года назад
Yes, exactly what A. J. said...the straighten part is what makes the frilliness, but it's the differing degree of frillyness between the flounces that I was trying to explain! 🤪

I've never got rotary cutters to work for me but when I worked in a fabric shop I quickly learned from colleagues that spring loaded scissors made a huge improvement to how comfortable my hands felt at the end of the day. Hands are designed to have much more strength in squeezing than pushing outwards so allowing the spring to pop the scissors open again after each cut really cuts the work your hands have to do by more than half.

I have a Bernina. I have the fishing line. But in all my years of making princess dresses for my nieces it never occurred to me to MacGyver the process!! You need to patent that idea. WOW! You are an incredibly patient and talented dressmaker!!!

I think that the varying levels of ruffleiness (which isn't a word, granted) actually adds to the look of the flounces. It makes them more organic and gives them more dimension in my opinion :)

Hahahhaha I know this feeling. I am currently making a winter elf ball gown and I am currently at 60 meters in ruffles on two Petticoats. Seriously it's never ending! 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Another time/effort saving technique is to cut the flounces in a spiral. That way you don't have to cut and attach as many circles together, rather you will sew one seam per layer of fabric. Also for anyone who needs to buy something to hold the rolls of fishing line and Tulle/fabric lookup roll/reel holders that clamp onto the table. they are used in factory sewing. They can be horizontal or vertical and be in front of or above the machine.

Possibly...though I'm not sure how it would be to have to draw up that pattern...

Is there any pattern for this? I feel like it would be a lot quicker but more difficult to work out hahhah
