Learning 3D is hard, so why not remake a classic to learn Game Link - overphil.itch.io/froggo Discord Server is here! Discord - / discord Instagram - / overphildev #unity #gamedev #devlog
Your channel is going to be HUGE. You deserve it man, you make great content. Well done with this project, it looks really fun in 3d. And I can't wait to see how your dream game turns out!
the issue seems to be because that log/turtle entity is scaled, so when you set the player transform to that of the log/turtle it copies it and gets distorted, the solution online seems to be to create a new entity that would be the parent of that log/turtle, then you would change its position. If you set the player transform to that parent entity's transform it's scale would be (1, 1, 1) so you shouldn't get any distortions - maybe
@@overphildev ARE is correct, it's because of the scale of the turtles. Easy fix, just set the turtle gameobject to be the child of an empty gameobject, make sure the empty gameobject scale is 1,1,1. The script for movement or whatnot, goes on the "parent" gameobject, use the turtle gameobject ONLY for the model (that one can have any scale you want). Finally, just when you land on the log or turtle, make sure to place the player's parent to be the parent gameobject of the turtle or the log. Done, I always try to have the "model" gameobject inside another gameobject so to be able to a) scale my model without the fear of is affecting the "outside" world and b) to be able to have the pivot point where ever I like. Cheers bro! Wanna continue to see the progress on your "Dream Game". If you do get stuck with anything, do not hesitate to hit me up, I'll be happy to help out.
Great video! I had the same problem you had with the parenting of the player to the frog, as other people suggested it is probably because of the scaling on the frog, just remember when making models on blender to apply scaling before exporting by selecting the object and clicking ctrl+A then apply all transforms, that should fix it. For fixing the stuttery movement, I think the solution is to apply the offset movement in the fixed update instead of the on trigger stay.
i love it! i randomly stumbled across your channel and im really excited about your journey! i have absolutely no idea about creating games, but i really enjoyed the humorous way you make mistakes and fix them. im really looking forward to you creating your dream game and i love the idea of creating other smaller games on the side to help your learning curve. keep up the good work you‘ve definitely earned a subscriber
This is so cool! Making small little games is so fun and makes you feel proud of yourself. The first game I made was a hidden object game in Scratch because those were my childhood! I was so proud of the code because it was my first game, and I even made animations for when you found the items just like in the actual games!
The only thing I would say to add is a quick view change keybind. Like hold left mouse-click to look 30 degrees left right mouse-click to look 30 degrees right.
I thought this came out really cool! I’d maybe play with your lighting a little as it felt a bit dark at points. Maybe a little post-processing changes and baking some lights can help. Game seems really well thought out though!
there's plenty of frogger 3D versions, and incorporations of the concept into other games. First thing that comes to mind is crash bandicoot: it's about time. The first boss uses frogger gameplay.
Frogger 3D is a video game for the Nintendo 3DS. It was released in North America on September 20, 2011, Japan on September 22, 2011, and Europe on November 8, 2011.
Would love to see some more content and updates on the game , It got me really interested ! Also TikTok is a great way to share little progress about the game to keep us updated ! Loved the first vid and im waiting for more
This is great stuff, you're the first RU-vidr I have ever bestowed the (not so great) honor of enabling notifications, I'd love to see the channel grow
I really liked Sam Hoogan's content but he stopped and I stopped watching these style of videos, but.... Now I found your channel and I can't wait to watch your future vids, good stuff!
Really enjoyed the video. Learning some stuff with rather small projects (Altough remaking a calssic is not that small ^^ ) is a very good idea. I am studying Game Design at a university and we kind of learn everything whit projects.
Yo! I came from your dev log video, this is really cool!! I myself am making a game too. Should I make dev logs videos? Haven’t made RU-vid videos in ages, and that’s kinda holding me back. Anyways, you just earned yourself a subscriber!
I love your style. I don't really know, how to fix the parenting issue, but I can give my comment as a sacrafise to the god of the youtube algorithm, so the video will be as popular as your last one. OverPhil, and everyone, who reads this comment, have a goo day.
I ran into the same issue when trying to work on a platforming system for my first game the trick I used to get around it was in the scale... basically when you parent your player to the platform it kinda inherits the scale of the parent ...I dunno if I'm phrasing this right but just check the scales and subtract it right after you parent him then add it back when you hop off..... Not super clean but it works
3:18 The stuttering might be caused by the FixedUpdate or LateUpdate OnTriggerStay gets called every FixedUpdate so either its the player movement that is stuttering, or the camera Is your camera movement called in an Update or LateUpdate ? (Sorry for my bad english and if my comment does not seem clear)
hi, i want to remake a classic too.... by any chance do you've a tutorial that worked good for yourself, for rigging and animating your character then move it to unity? trying to find specificly for blender + unity but i dont find much. ( i use blender too)
I actually found a ton that didn't work. Instead just export your model as an fbx and upload it to mixamo. Apparently it will rig it for you but I haven't tried that so I can't confirm. I can confirm Mixamo is good for animations though
Interesting it doesn't automatically carry you? Is that to do with the physics model for your character you imported? I'd think you'd change the friction on your character and then moving object. Then again I know nothing about unity except for watching a few youtube videos and putzing around with a 2d rabbit hopping around and sniffing things.
Yeah thats not a default behavior in unity. So normally you can just parent it to the object and it will move correctly but I might have messed something up so that didn't work.
So I've been playing around with unity off and on for about 5 years but I only recently got serious with it. So I'd say I'm a little familiar with unity but I'm still very new to 3d games. Unless you think this was trash then this is the first time I opened untiy lol
@@overphildev Nah hahah I won't judge if this is trash or not. I was interested because I see myself in the same situation like you are :). But I only do 2D for 5 years lol
I learn best by doing so I'd recommend starting with a very simple game like pong. This way you can build fundamentals like learning how to move and interact with an object. Plus you can Google something whenever you get stuck
What would you say made my last video so good so I can focus in it more in the next one. I am only 4 videos in so I am very much still trying to learn.
@@overphildev I’m one persons opinion, but literally make a dev blog #1, than 2 than 3. I think it’s awesome that you thought it was a good idea to take the time to make a game like this for good practice, but it should of been mentioned in a pass by of the dev blog #1. the way you summed up your journey and showed your experience was really cool to watch, I know it doesn’t do it justice to the amount of work you actually are putting in, but it’s super satisfying to watch as a viewer.
Haha yeah my last video didn't blow up until I was mostly done with frogger so I wasnt just gonna scrap it. I know people wanna see the next devlog so I've been working on it since then and plan to continue doing those. Thanks for the feedback I really do appreciate it
This is an okay video but I dont like how you copy CodyCantEatThis' ideas for this trend and not even mention about him in the vid. Thats kind of a dooshbag move imo cuz if u did mention about where u copy this idea from (It was so obvious to tell, even the thumbnail looks the same) then this would have been a pretty good video.
