You had your government wages maxed out the entire time. If you had reduced it to the normal level your government wages would of been more manageable and you could of invested into a university
You should have researched military naval technology to get more maximum available ship port numbers. Because for railways you have to reasearch so many things and have engine factory. That way you could get more infrastructure along with convoys.
You also could have changed the production method on the ports to get 5 more infrastructure per level. this would have fixed your market access problems.@@TheLastJedi1444

I’ve done Iceland a couple times if I can offer my perspective: It is basically essential to join someone’s market right away, ideally lower SOL like you did with Russia but realistically with the MAPI implementation you can’t reliably build factories and just import the base goods. being in the market doesn’t necessarily mean your local prices will be affordable enough for your factories to use effectively either though. Your only resource is sulfur so I’d suggest going for fertilizer industries first as these will create the most gdp growth compared to the wood/iron industries that just won’t have as effective MAPI because those raw resources just don’t exist in Iceland. You really need to take some land outside of Iceland as soon as possible. By the 1870’s I was able to get a landing in South Africa through Gaza and from there i was able to take the 4 South African states which skyrocketed my income from all the minting and enormous pop growth. From there you’re kinda set.
Do I understand correctly, that in order to start as an Iceland, you start as Denmark and release Iceland? Can you start as a Russia, release Ukraine and a bunch of other nations, and then continue as Ukraine? That would be so cool!
Small nations are an exercise in patience, you have to AFK until you are in a big market and have railways and the port technologies, so you can have the convoys needed for all the necessary exports and imports and the railways for the infrastructure, the market for the consumer market and pops. If you try to leap frog anything you will end up with a headache just like you had, trying to micro what resource to prioritize and figuring out why X and Y resource are costing so much. Normally an issue of market access, local prices and infrastructure. Much pain.
