I actually really liked this book lol. But the audio version is awful. I dislike audio books in general though.

Finally someone who felt the same way! Everyone seems to love this book and I just don't get it. BTW - if you think the first one had little to no plot, the second one is even worse! No plot or character development just talking in circles and banging.

I thought this book was the weirdest combo of tedious worldbuilding but still being confused because they explain everything but nothing at the same time. I still ended it with wanting to read the next one but will prob skip it because the reviews are mentioning that there's very little by way of plot movement.

something about the maiden thing that i realized as soon as you brought it up- Poppy doesn't even know what being the maiden truly entails because everything about the ascension is kept secret but what doesn't work is that it's not clear that BOTH the audience and Poppy are supposed to be in the dark about it so you're just left confused. I think a lot of it comes from the first person aspect actually because poppy just relays what she knows but she doesn't know squat so imo i think it would have been better in 3rd person

THANK YOU for this video! I really didn’t enjoy From Blood and Ash, for all of the reasons you both said. I think I generously rated it 3* on GR. So thanks for sharing because I definitely felt in the minority with my opinions. I’ve also read KoFaF and...wasn’t a fan of that either. Both are readable, but the info dumps are just as bad and confusing. While SJM isn’t my fave, I really enjoy her story telling and world building immensely.

I hope you continue with DBBC, this is wonderfully hilarious.

I finish this yesterday and I really don't understand the hype. Basically, u read 550 pages of nothing and then the last few pages are interesting, but I still think that doesn't make the book good enough. Also, the romance was so awkward and creepy. The guy is always saying "uh, I know u want me" , I am so good." Ugrhhhh. Still want to read the second. I have hopes that this will be better...

i think the premise and ideas behind the plot were really interesting but it was very poorly executed. i can see what the author was trying to do (an oppressive society that is presented through the eyes of a “supporter” of the regime and the use of a threat of violence to push forward an ideology). from a history junkie standpoint i can appreciate that but the rest just fell flat BOOK RECS: See No Evil by Ivy Fox (bully romance with interesting secret society plot); Fortune Favors the Cruel by Kel Carpenter (fantasy slow burn with anti-heroine and anti-hero); Wandering Queen by May Dawson (reverse harem, heroine has lost her memories)

I think you'd have things to say about A Promise of Fire, the first book in the Kingmaker Chronicles by Amanda Bouchet. It's a fantasy romance very loosely based on Greek mythology with some of the same elements as FBAA but with more plot, and the audio narrator is actually good. It's a trilogy. I've only read the first two so far but I think they're pretty enjoyable. The character's internal dialogue is also less insufferable

That's another of my big gripes about this book the relationship was not there for me either.

So much more is revealed in the next book that answers your questions and adds to the story. You learn along with Poppy as events unfold. I’m not saying this series is great, but the author intentionally writes these plot holes into the timeline.

there was SO MUCH infodumping in this series and yet i still don’t understand the lore because it was so poorly done. i was bored and confused through quite a bit of it.

for me this book didnt start until about 300 pages in. i found myself skimming over the info dump at the beginning so when i finally got interested i had to go back and read the beginning again to catch everything i missed. the second book in this series is a lot better in my opinion.

I enjoyed FBAA while i was reading it except for the creepy hawke ??? Like the plot had me way more intrigued than the romance that felt like emotional Abuse from the first interaction. The more that time passes the less i like the book as a whole. And I’m not even surprised because i absolutely hated JLA’s obsidian. I mad a rant video about it a million years ago lol. YA with a female protagonist that is way better than this, my suggestion is a daughter of smoke and bone. For a romance, i really liked Faking It!

Unpopular opinion, I really didn’t enjoy the first book but pushed through so I could read the second book. LOVED the second book but still hated the first book.

I actually didn't like this book all that much either and to he honest I probably wouldn't have read the second book if I hadn't already bought it but I did read it and I enjoyed it way more than this one. The cliffhanger on the second book is better than this one. Poppy opens herself more to the world outside of the castle in the second book so we get more information. I also support the threesome idea with Kiran(?), Hawke and Poppy.

I gave it 3 stars. I wasn't into Hawke and Poppy's relationship until the "big reveal" and to me Hawke came off as very patronizing while Poppy was SO sheltered and ignorant of a lot of what was going on. This book is really one big info dump/set up for the actual plot, and it was too long. However I do sort of find it interesting? The world building wasn't visual at all, but I was never bored and I did think there was a lot of interesting complexity to it. I liked Hawke and Poppy a bit more at the end bc I like enemies to lovers. I attempted to read Kingdom of Flesh and Fire but DNF'd it early on because both Poppy and Hawke were insufferable, even though I was looking forward to potentially a more enemies to lovers type thing in the second book. The characterization was... not it imo

i'm kind of torn on this book -- i resisted reading it for a longtime since the opinions seemed so mixed on it. while the story is convoluted and the concepts seem unnecessarily complicated at times (was it just me or did they refer to "second and third" sometimes and then "third and fourth" sons and daughters other times -- like which is it?), i actually enjoyed the plot and, though i wasn't really shocked by any of the reveals, the book picked up in the second half. honestly, the very worst part of this book was JLA's writing -- i read the Lux series and it flowed fine, but something was so off about her writing style here and it kept taking me out of the story until i finally adjusted to it halfway through. it was a weird combination of awkwardly written/composed sentences and this confusion about whether this was meant to be written in a more modern (in terms of speech and colloquialisms) style or an old-timey archaic style (more characteristic of fantasy set in kingdoms). JLA kept jumping in and out of both styles and it was jarring -- like, here i am imagining castles and sword fighting and standard fantasy settings, while the main character uses words like "freaking", "weird", etc. overall, i was entertained the last half but the writing style made it a slog to get through (even once i was more used to the strange writing). i'm gonna read the second book, more because i hate not finishing things and less because i absolutely loved the first. also, i don't really mind the honeydew comments, but in my opinion, that's like the worst fruit ever 😹

I loved FBAA, and the sequel, couldn’t put them down. Looking back though, I def wouldn’t re-read them, I feel I just got swept up in them the first time (it was one of my first fantasies so I’d didn’t have anything to compare it to, which worked in its favor). 100% understand why people hate it! tbh i think the biggest downfall of this book is the fact that it's written in first person (other than the poor writing)!! everything is so vague up until 65% of the way through because poppy doesn't know shit lmao so we're finding everything out along with her and JLA doesn't really do a good enough job telling us without telling us what's going on. like the only thing i found she did well was showing us casteel wasn't human throughout the book before the big reveal. i did however kind of like the idea of knowing poppy is the chosen one from the beginning tho or at least how it was handled. i liked the conflict of how being "the maiden" meant she had to live as a "god" and couldn't indulge in anything that would make her seem too human, and the fact that she is a human. plus i thought it was really fun to have a "chosen one character" kind of knowing she's the chosen one but throughout the novel questioning if she's actually special.

The relationship between Hawke and poppy is so toxic... I mean she trusten him with her whole body! And he really took advantage from her. And she still likes him! Like one moment she wants to murder him and than they have sex lol. She should run away and look for a better guy. I haven't read book 2 yet because I am really scared about how it will turn out. I really hope she will stand up for herself

as a fbaa stan, i see and agree with all your points but somehow don't care 😂 to be fair, i don't think it would make sense for more to be explained in the beginning, because it's 1st person from poppy's pov and she, like most in the kingdom, has no idea what's actually going on. but it does make for a confusing reading experience lol. i would love to see you guys do the grishaverse next!!

I, too, listened to it on audio and while I liked the narrator, the book was just BAD. I even decided to give the second one a try to see if the story improved...I mean there had to be a reason why everyone was obsessed, right? Wrong! I don' t think i've ever rolled my eyes so much. And while ACOTAR is far from perfect, it is light years ahead of this one both in the world building and the romance.

Yeah I felt the same. It wasn’t even “enjoyably bad” as you put it, it just wasn't fun to read. I didn’t even go into it with high expectations and I was still let down. I actually liked Kieran though, but definitely not for Poppy.
