Why buy something cheaply if you can spend hours and hours making it yourself? I make things. Where possible, I try to upcycle old material and stuff that other people have thrown away. Whether you seek inspiration or simply like watching other people work - I hope you enjoy my videos.
It depends on the thickness of the blade before you start and the angle of the bevel :) it was a 1000 grit water stone and I didn’t take hours. But yes, the whole project is not geared towards time efficiency…
@@imadethischannel yeah ofcourse... i asked this spesific project, i saw you left a good chunk of steel on the edge(1,5 to 2mm thick maybe?) when hardening... i mean i know its necessary to leave some to prevent conflicts on hardening state but still its a nightmare me to grind hard steel 😂😂
@goonstuck haha, yes :) I don‘t remember exactly but it was definitely less than a mm. But it is a tradeoff. I tend to err on the patience side because I have had to redo stuff many times where I tried to cut corners…
Nice video! I also saw this machine in one of StavrosGakos videos and also in your video. I´ve been looking for one of these for 1 - 2 years perhaps.. Today I found one in Ebay and bought it. Still have to pick it up, but it seems in a great state according to the pictures... It´s from Metabo though and I agree; its absolut hard to find any information about his crank drill presses.. I´m very curious, how this one will work out :-) greetings, ruben
Martín Fierro, un personaje literario clásico argentino de José Hernández, decía tener el facón (cuchillo del gaucho) hecho con una lima plana. Martín Fierro, a classic Argentine literary character by José Hernández, claimed to have the facón (gaucho's knife) made with a flat file.
Nice knife I would have melted some silver solder at the base of the ferrule at the blade just to fill it in. Did it shave hair after the last water stone with final strop ?
I know its just a simple tool, but it was nicely done and came out very nice. A tool that should serve you, and your children's children, very well. Oh the chips it will make for years to come. Good job.
Update : i tried, turn out it was either not a fine enough powder or it just wont go in the wood and stay on it till it get wipped off with the excess of wax, resulting in a normal but dirty finish, i'll try coffee in a few day, thanks for the suggestions!
Hey, thanks for your interest! Currently, all my projects are one-offs. But this may change in the future. If you want to be informed, you can sign up for the free tier on patreon (www.patreon.com/imadethischannel) so I have your email.
Nice to see this being done by hand. It takes me back to having to do all the hand filing and cutting work, despite all the machines designed to make do exactly that, sitting right there teasing us all with their power off ;)
This is an ingenious piece of geometry as well as woodworking. I am still trying to wrap my head around some of the math. I'd like to ask whether the fence is "tilted" to make the 10-degree bevel? I'm guessing the fence causes the plane to tilt so that the left edge of the blade begins the cut and as it goes deeper the right edge of the blade finishes the cut to the edge of the board. I think this is correct but the woodwork is so good it's hard to tell even when I stop the video to look.
Hey, I’m glad you like my plane! I constructed the angle of the sole according to the desired bevel angle as seen in the video with the paper wedge. I am sure there is a mathematical way to do it but I found this more intuitive. Everything else then followed from the angle of the sole and the fact that the iron is rectangular. You have to make sure to hold the plane upright when starting a cut. I planes the fence flush with the face to make sure it has the correct angle. Does that answer the question?
Good job. I also make and restore Japanese knives, so I know what I am talking about. That one turned out a real beauty! You might want to try an aji kiri...
I've searched dozens of times on RU-vid for great hand tools like this, for their smooth, quiet operation. And Almost nothing ever shows up because Google sucks at search (yeah, the irony burns). This video is pure gold.
These are standard saw blades and the time depends very much on the thickness of the material. Treaded rods and files are pretty quick, though. Check out my router plane video if you want to see some serious hand sawing workout ;)
@@imadethischannel thanks for the reply man! I’ve make that my next watch. I love the atmosphere (or vibe if you are like those kool kidz) that your videos bring. It reminds me of the opening credits from the movie Napoleon Dynamite, minus the singing haha.
Hey, thanks for watching! I’m not sure I understand your question. Since I am using a straight blade, the cutting angle is determined by the angle of the dovetail. Or what do you mean?
