I Make The HEAVIEST Golf Club EVER! THIS THING FEELS AMAZING! I Make The HEAVIEST Golf Club EVER!!!! The Heaviest Iron EVER!... THIS FEELS INSANE!!! Golf club manufactures are making golf clubs that go further and further every year... and a big part of this is the weight of the club. as long as you can still swing it fast a heavier object will produce more power than a lite one to hit longer golf shots. the taylormade p790 iron, the Callaway apex irons, Titleist t100 titlest t200 and Titleist t300 irons, the Mizuno jpx iron... all of these are designed to hit a golf ball as far as possible... on this channel I like to take things to the extreme... we had the zero lofted iron, we have had a fully loaded TaylorMade m5 weighted driver, Rick Shiels did the grooveless wedge and now... we see this... I add a load of weight to a ping blueprint iron and see just how much difference it makes, maybe these will be the best irons of 2019, or will it be an epic golf fail?... lets do it... and lets do it now!

100%! I hit my stock 8 iron 138 yrs carry. Added 20 g. Lead tape. BOOM. 168 yd.carry.. Crazy. I am strong. And can't feel weight of clubhead . This fixes tempo and makes me aware of where the club head is in space with minimal grip pressure! Awesome.

Hi James this video brings back so many memories. When I was a young lad I would also put lead weights on my irons to feel the club through out the swing. Using this combined with lessons got my handicap down to 6. I might start using this method again.Great video James

Back in the 1960s, I learned on a set of Spalding forged blades. The pro I took lessons from decided they were too light for me and added lead tape to the back of them to bring the swing weights up from a C8 to a D5. His philosophy was to let the weight of the club head do the work. Helped me get the ball in the air more consistently. Also it turned me into an iron player. I took up the game again 7 years ago and play with men's clubs +1" length - Cobra F9 One Lengths also D5.

Check out Moe Norman’s thoughts on club weighting. He swung E3 vs today’s clubs at around D1 to D2. Longer shafts, larger grips and tons of weight added to the head. All in a quest for consistency and control. I play my best when I can feel the head of the club, so light grips and shafts with maybe one strip of lead tape and 1/2” longer. Gives me a higher swing weight but with a light overall weight.

I'm glad you did this video! I started golfing over 50 years ago with, obviously, an old set of clubs. The woods WERE woods. and the irons were blade style. My old persimmon driver hit about 230 yds. all over the place. I worked in a factory where I used a "deadblow" hammer( a rubber coated mallet with an internal weight to follow contact to reduce rebounding. I took off the grip and poured an ounce of lead shot down the shaft followed with a lot of Elmers glue. This narrowed my pattern down by 50%, and added 20 yds to my distance. Now that I've improved my clubs many times to larger "nonwoods" and also lighter irons, I can't find the right balls to fit my clubs' performance level.

James, fantastic video! I tested going heavier with my irons, even though I’m a single digit handicap, and it’s taking my game to a whole new level. I went from a standard D2 swingweight to an E5. Yes, for real! It’s a ton of tape but the difference it has made is so unbelievable…I couldn’t be happier. Everything is just dead straight. The dispersion is so incredibly tight, and I’m getting great height on the shots with a steeper descent angle. All of the iron shots are just straight as can be, and I really could not be happier. It’s hard to imagine swinging clubs at this weight for a whole round, but it’s been probably months now, and my game has just improved dramatically--simply from putting all this lead tape on the back of my clubs.

I play all my clubs heavy my driver is a d 5 swingweight my irons are between D7 and D9 love the heavyweight and the feel keeps you from pulling the club too fast just wait for it I find if I play a club that's too light I'm all over the face if it's a little heavier I seem to be more consistent with the strike

I’ve been thinking of adding lead tape to my 4 iron to try and get an extra 10’. Otherwise, I’ll stick with using a hybrid in place of the 4 iron. I just love the looks of my irons and hate the looks of my hybrids (but they do produce).

Thanks, James. There is probably an optimum weight where you achieve the best balance of direction/distance. By the way, the more you play with heavier clubs, the stronger you become and that may lead to more lead tape.

Exactly what Moe Norman figured out long ago and why all his clubs had massive amounts of lead tape all over the heads and huge grips also and is imho why he was also able to hit his shots as straight as he did, and as long as he was too.....he mentions it all on one of the videos I've seen on here....definitely going to be adding some weight to all my clubs this season!

Roger Federer uses a 366g racquet, the pro tour average is 320-335g?. I am not surprised by the results of adding weight and I would also suggest a likely improvement in the feel/feedback of wedges? it negates vibration and twisting improving stability @impact. As has been shown the best way to find your ideal custom set-up is to benchmark.

Tom Wishon when he fits clubs, he goes heavy till the shots go bad then backs off till person finds the swing weight that gives the player his best numbers. Some like heavier some like light, I like a bit of weight behind my clubs as it helps me stay in a swing rhythm when I go lighter I find I over swing and shots get erratic.

I used one on my Wilson staff fg17, and 3 strips on the wedges. Get about 10 yards extra per club. Good review.
@TenPester

There’s a lot more to it and also has a lot to do with shaft droop and bend at impact. Droop could actually be helping you hit the sweet spot more resulting in a better strike which equals distance and feel. Heavier head just helps people time up better but swinging for a full round can have negative effects on energy if you start to hit rather than swing the club.

It would have been interesting to know what the initial Swing weight was and then what the SW was with the weight added. It would be interesting to see you do a series of vids with a Master Club Fitter like Jason MacNiven at Golf Principles to explore what the effects are of changes in SW and Counter Balanced shafts.

I use 2 or even 3 irons held together before I practice to warm up with and get the swing tempo down as well as stretch out. Works wonders to help strengthen grip and increase flexibility. Just make sure to start off slow and work into the proper tempo. I have a set of mp 59s and absolutely love them. Bought second hand and they were almost brand new. They seem to be a little heavier than newer clubs.

Now experiment with placing 20-40 grams of weight in the end of the grip. Supposed to make the golfer feel the handle more and result in dramatic increase in club head speed. The increase in mass appears to increase the inertia of the handle end, making the swing more dynamic on the club head end.
@billweston9881

You don't need to put lead tape on the back of your irons, you can use lead weights specifically designed to fit at the bottom of the shaft. Of course, this necessitates removing the heads, but once you know what swing weight you like, the appropriate weight lead shaft tip weight can be inserted. They are sold in different weights, from 2 grams (One swing weight point) up to 10 grams (Five swing weight points). Easy and cosmetically better.

all the guys had practice clubs with sand or lead powder poured down the shaft. lighter clubs are relatively new to golf. the old steel shafts were so heavy and stiff the club head had to be heavy as well. when i was a kid we all had tape on our clubs. it was fun to play around with how it changed ball flight

Back in the 50 years ago all irons were lead weighted and finished in the high D’s to low E’s swing weight... clubs swung themselves. In the OEM battle to outdo each other on the launch monitors, we’ve lost so much in the subtle art of clubs that swing themselves like finely built swords. Too bad. Thanks for doing this btw, your results were exactly what I expected. :D

Yeah i had this exact feeling when i bought an old vintage set of forged irons from the 70s i believe, they felt heavier, and more solid/dense. So I took them for a round, first off they made me swing more naturally somehow, as if the clubs were guiding me, and surprisingly, I was hitting the 5 iron around 170 which is only around 10 yards shorter than my modern 5 iron. This isn't shocking until you realise the vintage 5 iron is around 30-32 degrees of loft and my modern 5 iron is 21 degrees, dunno if I was striking it better, but the feel was so much nicer from these old irons as well as the sound. Even though the soles were thinner and as well as the top line on these blades, the fact they were higher lofted, made them so much easier to hit, even the 3 iron which is around 24-25 degrees was a joy to hit, and that thing was tiny. Also I was playing with a set of Ping eye woods 1-3-4-5, and the weird thing with all these old clubs was they had a weird draw bias about them, could have just been my swing on the day, but the off line shots seemed to always go left, even though my bad shot is normally a slice, the irons seemed to do this also but not as much as the woods. I was thinking it's maybe because these old clubs had much larger hosels as well as smaller/lower toes in the irons which may have shifted the centre of gravity more towards the heel promoting a draw?

I like the feel of a heavy club head. That doesn't mean the club is heavy, just that I can tell there is some weight at the end of the club. There are various ways to do that these days without adding lead tape. You can order clubs with heavy swing weight, get fitted first though. You can lighter shafts and lighter grips. Both will make the feel of the club more head heavy. Again get fitted for all of this.

Great memories here. I grew up using lead tape on blades. It was part science part art. I still use what's considered "heavy irons" at D2. The biggest "ah-ha" moments of my life's golf journey was getting to swing one of Ben Hogan's irons at the Ben Hogan Museum in Dublin, Texas. It was HEAVY and the lie was really flat. I kept thinking how amazing it must have felt to pure a balata ball with one of his irons. To be that strong and that precise seems impossible to me still.

I have been backweighting my irons for years!! I actually get my irons up and around the E-0 range. Yes, they feel heavy, but I believe they create a tempo that I can control easily, and I believe that is what it's about. Does it take away from your velocity? Probably, but my accuracy increases by quite a bit. If you try this, give it some time to get use to it. My driver use to be 48" long. I was able to create a tempo that seemed like all I have to do is get the clubhead moving. Don't believe that with a longer club you lose accuracy. Again, not everyone is alike, and I am not saying this will work for all.

Problem is when you are physically stronger lighter Club heads suck because you can't get feedback of where the club head is in space! I did a test on my 8 iron versus my friends Callaway 8 iron (heavy head). My carry distance best was 148. Lighter shaft.Lighter Club head. With Callaway hit 2 172 yd carry! Couldn't believe it. Since I felt the weight of the club head hinged the wrists more and had loads more time in transition! Basically crushed it.

Basically counterbalancing the club. I’m sure the swing weight on that ping was most likely In the low E range. Let’s try something in the low C or high B range next. Back in the Day I played Wilson Staff Blades Steel Reg R400 Shafts for years as a Good Ball Striker. As I was getting older I made the mistake 10 years ago of going to 'lighter' Game Improvement Irons with Graphite Shafts. Over that same period disgruntled I ahve purchased and been custom fitted for 10 New Sets of 'Lighter' GI Irons. I could never get the 'feel' in my swing or be confident inevitably my Iron play became absolute rubbish. Last week I bought a well looked after good condition Set of Wilson Staff FG 55's with R400 Steel Shafts. Most, if any, of the Clubs in Big Brand Set are never the Manufacturers advertised Swingweight (e.g. D2.) I now own a GolfSmiths Swingweight Balance and have with Lead Tape set the FG55's back at D2. So far I have only hit Practice Balls, but the difference in swing feel/coordination and return of good ball striking has been amazing - I am looking forward to my next Round as these far heavier Clubs are certainly performing far better on tighter dispersion with added distance then the GI irons. I watched your Video and was reassured it really works and I wasn't crazy (not everyone would agree with that last point). Many Thanks to you and I do hope your experiment gets a wide exposure in the Golfing Community. Cheers , Bob

Now you know why many of the top tennis professionals in the world on both sides weight up their racquets. Your followers must also understand with the addition of lead tape the center of gravity will shift and the center of percussion, (that sugary part of the sweet spot of your iron) and its harmonics could also change.

What happens if you do 50:50, head and grip end!!? ☺ 👍
@atb2003
@atb2003 3 года назад
For every 10 grams on the head the weight moves 5 points heavier, for every 10 grams on the grip end the weight moves 2 grams lighter... you can do the math which should end with 3 points heavier on the head end... not sure why you would do 50/50 you either want a heavier club or a lighter club weight.

I was wondering if you finally had to get out the calculator to see what 3x8 was. :) I saw you with a perplexed look on your face and then came the edit.

Newton's 2nd law of motion (F = ma) explains the results. This is why some players can swing a heavier golf club and get more distance. A "bow and arrow" with more mass will go further than one with less mass using the same force. More weight in my club allows me to be smoother with a better tempo this gives me a faster ball speed.

Interesting video. What Swingweigt was that thing at with 24g. Are you now going to experiment with what amount of tape you could add to your normal irons to get the same effect? Maybe only need 2 strips (or hosel weights) to get the same effect on the course..maybe?

just have them swing weighted. There are weights to put in the end of the shaft to get a heavier club

Old school. Pros and players back in the day would modify their clubs with lead tape all the time. Great to see you play with this concept...there may be a run on lead tape as a result of your video!

Newton's 2nd law. Force = mass x acceleration Basically it's not how fast you swing it, it's the combination of how fast and how much it weighs. What hits harder? A mack truck full of bricks going 40MPH or a VW going 80MPH? Shot from a gun, a 20 caliber bullet going bullet 1800 ft per second or a 50 caliber bullet going 1000 ft per second? Also in a golf swing it's not just the weight of the club to consider when calculating total mass, those who have figured out how to incorporate their body into the strike (not just their arms and club) add mass (torso weighs something) into the force of the strike, effectively striking the ball harder. Eventhough they aren't swinging faster.

how about do the same thing on your 6 iron, 5 iron,4 iron, 3 iron....put the same wt on all those irons and then make them all the same length as the 7 iron.... how would they hit then.....????

I always wondered what would happen if you put fluid in the shaft. Like a few grams of mercury. It could shift to the handle in the backswing and shoot down to the head on the downswing. Obviously the shaft would have to be sealed and another dense type fluid would be needed as mercury is toxic stuff.
