Hi! I'm Tanic Sims 2 but you can call me Tanny and welcome to the fourth instalment of the Sims 2 Corruption Chronicles.
We know that keeping backups of your hoods is a vital step in protecting them against corruption and provides an extra layer of safety just in case things go wrong. But what if you merged multiple backup folders into one? How will the game cope? Will it doom your hoods and wipe out sims’ existences? Spoiler alert: yes. Yes, it absolutely will. So, obviously, I needed to try it.

Another experiment, just so the gap between Strangetown and Veronaville’s videos isn’t so big ❤️ Really hope it’s interesting despite being more technical (and, honestly, most of the video is just me babbling...) At this point, it’d be easier to make a list of what you can do that won’t destroy your game. It’d still be a massive list, but the weird and wonderful ways the Sims 2 enjoys destroying itself will always outrank it.

I did this by pure accident to a town loosely based on my old town I grew up in. I realised that everything was going downhill when I noticed that a significant amount of people’s memories were linked to sims (of sim existences) that didn’t exist anymore either because of corruption or because of character files being replaced with different sims. It was the first neighbourhood I ever ran in hood checker and oh boy there were a LOT of “second sim doesn’t exist” I managed to fix most of the issues but I stopped playing with it as there were a lot of corruption/missing people or tombs etc. but it is what it is. About 10 years ago (I was 9) I played Veronaville religiously for like 5 hours a day and one day the neighbourhood had those green lines like terrain and then it didn’t work from that day onwards :( comes to show when this game goes wrong, it goes BADLY wrong :)

oh no!! have you noticed anything weird? if you’re not too attached and don’t mind resetting i would recommend doing that, but if you can’t the best you can do is keep an eye on things and keep it as healthy as possible. your hood might be ‘okay’ (well - _playable_, with relatively no signs of immediate corruption. behind the scenes however...) but unfortunately there’s not much you can do to remove any damage except for restarting and minimising potential issues in the future 😭 i’m so sorry!

@@tanicsims2 well, my game keeps crashing because he can't stand the snow, but besides that and too many townies because it's Belladonna and the game keeps generating neighbors no metter what, totally ignoring the NoTownieRegein, it's ok. I'm too attached to this mess, and I haven't started the other hoods, I need to reinstall the game because my version don't come with ikea. And when I play for several hours and run hood checker, some problems show up, that the program fix it anyways. And all this mess started because I wanted the original townies in my game and I still don't know how to have them. SOS.

Fernanda A oh no! i am so sorry! it really is a shame that there aren’t any clean versions of the ep hoods with the original townies. i know there is a manual way to get all of them into the clean hood but it’s very time consuming and i imagine very fiddly. i really hope you’ll be able to get as much gameplay out of it as possible. even though it’s broken, if it makes you happy i think that’s all that matters at this point ❤️

@@tanicsims2 ps: I'm so weird that I'm attached not only with the playable sims, but with the random townies TOO. But now I can't stand the idea of playing even more and something is wrong with this hood so I'm dowloading the complete version of the game and I gonna start again, this time with less townies I hope, I'm still thinking about how to get the original townies in the 3 ep hoods.

I think the reason merging files is bad is because the files from the backup folder will only replace files that have the same name and path as the files in the current folder. If you’ve played for a while and placed a bunch of lots and townies have been spawning, those may end up in new files generated by the game. Now you place down an older version of the neighborhood which replaces all the files that share the old names, but newly the generated files still exist and are trying to reference information that used to exists in the files that have been replace.

agreed - you nailed it! that’s pretty much what i was trying to say when i mentioned the garden club townies having to respawn and potentially overwriting each other’s files but you explained it a lot clearer than i could lol. it’s also why i think it’s more immediately noticeable if the hood has been played longer than i had played strangetown and pleasantview here. i guess the effect of lots and character files being overwritten/replaced would be similar to deleting sims and how newly spawned sims/babies will just take the deleted sim’s id number, leading to the game getting confused and trying to point to a sim that no longer exists instead of focusing on the new ‘owner’ of the id number. honestly most of corruption in this game can be summed up with ‘the game’s confused and pointing to wrong data’ lol

I think another big reason the hoods get corrupted when you do this is the NeighborhoodManager package doesn’t have references to all or to the correct Characters and Lots files. This might be why your University was empty, for example. I suspect that if you do this overwriting instead of remove/replacing, and then open the borked hood, there is a chance that the other hoods in the Neighborhood folder at that time are also affected by the changes that makes to the NeighborhoodManager. Although that might not be a huge effect. I could play around with it and find out one day, although I’m happy enough just going with the rule of “Don’t do this, it’s a Very Bad Thing”. Love your work btw and so glad I just found your channel.

I did this a while back before I knew about corruption. The entire Goth household and lot suddenly disappeared one day as I was starting my next round. I still have that hood backed up somewhere to remind me lol

oh no! that’s devastating! that’s pretty late stage hood corruption too, so it must’ve happened relatively quickly. still... it’s honestly terrifying how doing something so simple can completely destroy your hood 😭

@@tanicsims2 Yeah, I was pretty sad about losing that save, I was liking the direction it was going in hahaha. It happened pretty quickly, after maybe 3 days of playing? Happy to report my current saves are in much better condition and farther along!

I think I once did this thinking that the "folder" will be replaced completely by the new folder lol. So I was playing and there were weird sims in the DEFAULT household without proper character datas and I was very confused. Now I know why :D

that’s so creepy! what do you mean by weird sims (out of curiosity)? were they ‘unknown’ with mr. potato head thumbnails in simpe, or did you see them in game?

@@tanicsims2 I didn't see them in the game but when I used the simblender to spawn someone I saw them in the Default household. There were also sims from my previous neighborhood without genetics and personality. Only their names were the same as the other save.

oh well. time to restart my hood, it was fun while it lasted (was probably already broken from the start because i did the same thing with the clean template)... I was only on the middle of round 1 anyway, but i'm probably salty enough to not play the game for two weeks or so

Long ago, I deleted some config file accidentally, which completely emptied all my main hoods and reset the sub hoods. I thought nothing of it except of course that I was pissed I had lost all of my Sims, but I just repopulated the city with ownies. I don't think that was healthy for my game at all.

oh no! that definitely wouldn’t be healthy! was the config file in the programme files? if so... i imagine you would have had to do a full reinstall 😭 i genuinely get scared sometimes thinking i’m going to accidentally delete something without realising, even when i know i’m being careful!

@@tanicsims2 I _think_ it wasn't in the programme files but in documents. Back then I never even thought of entering the programme files because I didn't get what the use was lol. I remember that I tried to bring back the original file from the paper bin, but for some reason it didn't fix anything. I recently installed all the games on my new PC, and I've become a corruption hypochondriac lol. I feel you, I get so scared too! I barely want to touch anything, and I have about 30 backup neighborhoods in case hood corruption hits. xP

Another fun experiment to try: back up all your 'hood templates, then name one of the "main" hoods with the name of a subhood. For example, rename N001 (Pleasantview) to M001 (the ID used for Three Lakes). Do a bulk rename in the file too. The neighborhood will load, but it will be... interesting. I won't spoil the results. (I did this accidentally when making a megahood; forgot that there was already an M001.)

don’t tell me exactly because i am really interested in *maybe* *possibly* trying this one day but i’m guessing the effects might be similar to naming a hood Tutorial? i love this idea but i’m terrified because it sounds like it teeters on the edge of game corruption since the vacation hood templates are in the programme files -and i am baby- - still, added it to the list, because hey; i was scared of hood corruption once upon a time too. i’m sure one day i will get over my fear of full on game corruption lol

@@tanicsims2 It will bork whichever hood template you rename it to, but it's easily fixable if it's one of the premade subhoods; just delete the borked folder and replace it with a backup. It won't make the whole game explode. I don't know what will happen if you rename it to Tutorial, but that sounds a lot more game-corruption-y, so I'd just stick with M001 or B001 or something like that.

I did this once with Pleasantview because I wanted to install the clean template but forgot to delete the folder BEFORE installing the clean template, and by that a lot of Sims disappeared (I didn't notice because they were townies and custom families that I didn't play anyway) and after one week of playing the hood disappeared from the Menu and HoodChecker couldn't load it anymore. So don't merge them lol

that’s devastating 😭 if there’s anything positive to come out of that situation... well, i guess it happened quick? but yeah - good advice! i didn’t realise how common this was until people began sharing their experiences here but it makes sense because it’s such an easy mistake to make. i am sorry that happened to you!

@@tanicsims2 Yeah luckly it happened very quickly so I didn't have the time to get attached to my pixels, also I recreated them because I had a spreadsheet with every couple and every name. I'm lucky that this happened with my least played hood!

i’m so glad you found me too 🥺 it’s so funny, because about a year ago i was watching content just like this and thinking the EXACT same thing, about how people on youtube were so brave and i was so grateful they were willing to do all these vbts for the sake of documenting corruption (back when i first got into this niche sub genre of the sims 2, there was barely any content out there aside from maybe a few screenshots, the wiki, and threads ㅠㅠ). i was just like, ‘wow, i could never be that brave’ 🤣 i probably won’t touch game corruption though, unless i’m able to use a separate laptop with a quarantined version of the game. it took a lot of courage to just start breaking hoods and experimenting with hood corruption so idk if i’ll be dipping my toes into game corruption anytime soon 🤣 but weirdly enough... making these videos and researching the ins and outs of corruption has actually made me less afraid of it!

Oh that's interesting. I don't think I knew about that but for some reason I always thought that just merging/replacing the files seemed like a bad idea so I usually just delete the folder and the copy and paste the version I want over. I guess it could lead to corruption because some of the files are newer and other files expect different versions of those replaced files. (I'm sure there's a more technical way of putting that but yeah lol.)

I also wonder what would happen if you mixed files from different neighbourhoods. 🤔 Like just add the lots and character folders together into one hood from different Maxis hoods. I guess it would probably just crash lol. (I haven't finished the video though yet so maybe you try that later lol.) Edit: Oh no it deleted the uni Sims. I think that neighbourhood will probably have a lot of really weird side effects if you keep playing it. The few times I've come across something like that happening where the game deletes loads of Sims including in my neighbourhood, it creates pretty bad corruption.

can’t seem to copy and paste for some reason but keiro multiverse explained it really well in another comment here!! but yeah, i’d say that’s pretty much what happens. i thought about doing that but i wasn’t sure if it would really work, since the files won’t really be ‘replaced’ - all the character files for example start with n00x, same for lots iirc, so files from strangetown n002 wouldn’t overwrite n001 files. it would just be adding files from another neighbourhood, which would probably cause many of its own problems. i guess the other option though would be renaming n002’s files for example to n001 and letting them overwrite... hmm. i could definitely try it! i just imagine it will cause an even bigger fiery ball than what happened in this video 😭 i still have these hoods so playing with them and fiddling around a bit more is a possibility! it’s just tricky to determine how long it’ll take for anything noticeably weird to happen, if anything happens at all!

@@tanicsims2 Oh yeah you could use bulk rename utility or a similar program to rename all the file prefixes so they're the same as the hood you're moving them to. I'm not sure exactly what info is in those files but things like lot placement if that's in there would probably cause some weird issues if you move placed lots, but I don't think that info is necessarily saved in there it might be in another file. I also wonder what would happen to Sims you move over and where they'd end up since they won't be in their lots anymore but it's possible it won't recognise them at all unless all the relevant files are updated in the right way.

That sounds really interesting! I must've been a really lucky kid, as I never experienced any major corruption issues, despite doing some very big no nos, such as moving out Olive Specter and Ophelia Nigmos, not knowing it sold everything in the house, including graves, which, again I didn't know would break the game, and then did the even worse task of DELETING the lot. How my game survived knowing what I know now, I have no idea! XD I also deleted all the bin families you get in each neighbourhood, because how was I supposed to know that pressing a button PROVIDED BY THE GAME would break it?! Anyway, some things you could look into for Veronaville are Caliban Capp, who apparently has a physical Death Token in his inventory that you need to delete to resurrect him properly according to The Sims Wiki, along with the Thebes (Consort's ancestors) which apparently cause a glitch when resurrected which prevents any Sims from moving out. Yeah, the code of this game is kind of a mess, but we love it anyway! XD Looking forward to the Veronaville video! (I'm Flash112, I'm on a different account. lol i feel like the only reason why i wasn’t aware of corruption as a kid - aside from the general, collective obliviousness - was that i never played a hood or family long enough to see any signs even if i did do something ‘bad’ (aka something included in the game...). no idea how my game would survive the inevitable messing around with boolprop though; i definitely added sims i shouldn’t have to households and did everything that would lead to total game corruption. again though... maybe i never saw anything because i never played long enough. that actually wasn’t on my list! i was aware of it (didn’t calipers mention it in the olivia monty video? i’ve definitely heard it somewhere, but i have never read about it) but completely forgot. i don’t think it’s even referenced on the wiki. would it be okay if i credit you (by name, or anonymously if you’d prefer) in the video? if you hadn’t reminded me i wouldn’t have included it in the video so i owe you!!

A bit late, but the way merging works is, if you have some old folder, and then you take a new folder and merge them, what Windows does is it takes all files and folders in the new folder, moves them into the old folder, and replaces any files that exist in both folders with the new folder's versions.

i accidentally merged one of my custom neighborhoods (that was named the same as pleasantview in the files) with pleasantview once and everything went to shit so maybe try sth like that lol

I do remember how I did the same thing as a small dumb child, who didn’t know that it is definitely NOT a great idea to dig deep into game files. So I got my punishment for it, my game was so broken that It would not open at all😅😂 But luckily I didn’t had any important saves at that point, and when I got older I figured out how to fix my game. So in the end... I learned my lesson😂 It’s great that by your video I remembered that funny story and nostalgia hit me hard right now🥺

I know this isn’t relevant to this video, but I’ve watched all your corruption videos lately and I have a funny, personal experience with this corruption in TS2 to share. I know you say that you (and everyone else in TS2 community) have stated that Strangetown is by far the most corrupted EAxis ‘hood, but I’ve noticed from my personal time playing all the ‘hoods (without clean templates in these cases of course), that my PV saves have gotten corrupted and became unplayable far more than my Strangetown save has. I haven’t done any VBT (that I know of at least, who knows, TS2 is so easy to corrupt) in the saves as well, so I’m not sure why it gets corrupted so often. I also don’t have broken mods or CC that would cause conflict. Thankfully, I constantly back up my saves and Hood Checker has been able to solve all the corruption issues I’ve had in PV. Let’s hope that Strangetown doesn’t become corrupted now as well since I’ve said all this. 😂 Btw, great video like always! Keep up the good work! It’s awesome to see your channel blowing up so much!!!💕

no way! goes to show how unpredictable (and tbh, inconsistent) corruption is. it’s like how some people get away with doing every vbt under the sun only to see nothing more than the odd weird want and squiggly lines here and there, meanwhile others can do nothing more than simply playing the base game hoods as they come only for everything to explode in a mere few weeks. sod’s law and all that 🤣 thank you so much! i’m still trying to process everything and honestly i already feel like i’ve achieved all i ever wanted when i made this channel that it’s hard to even imagine what might come next. i’m just happy that there’s a community of kind, like-minded people who accepted me and enjoy my content 🥺❤️

Hello, I don't know if you can give me a solution but I wanted to ask. I have a MacBook Air and bought Sims 2 on the appstore, Sims 2 Super Collection. But right now one of my neighborhoods doesn't let me enter it just loads, I've tried to see if I can fix it but most people tell me I have to go to my Sims files, but I don't have any files for Sims on my folders. It's just the app, is there a solution for this?

What would happen if in 2 different saves of strange town you put down 2 different lots in the same place and then merged the files?

-a big mess- off the top of my head, i couldn’t tell you exactly what would happen but... i definitely imagine it wouldn’t be good 🤣 especially if both lots took the same file name (let’s say the new lot is lot9.package). that’s when the cross-talk and confusion would happen because the file would overwrite. but if the lots get different ids, like in one version one is lot9 and the other is lot12, then probably the most that would happen would be that the lot just... doesn’t exist or show up in game. you’ve definitely got me curious because i want to know exactly what would happen!!!

Best way solve this is to delete the hood and then add back up save neighborhood back to the document. I had replace my save hood with clean template lol Knock on wood no corruption so far

Yesterday I downloaded a clean template of Pleasantview and pasted the folder into the neighborhood file, but I didn't delete the original N001 folder because I didn't know whether to delete it first or not, as it's my first time using a clean template. I saved over the original files. I've played the hood twice and I don't think I've had any issues yet, but now I'm concerned that I've completely messed up my game. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I hadn't played Pleasantview before I saved over the og files. Is it safe to delete the N001 folder and replace it with a new clean template folder instead?

I know you probably have your answer, but yes it's safe to delete the neighborhood folder. Honestly, if you for some strange reason didn't get an answer before, and still have the save, I'd just continue it if you don't see any issues.

What happens if you merge two different neighbourhood’s like strangetown and pleasant view? Is that possible in some way?

the files wouldn’t overwrite/replace in that case, since all pleasantview files start with n001 and strangetown’s start with n002. BUT if you used the bulk rename utility for example and, say, changed strangetown’s n002 files to n001 then tried merging the folders, the files should overwrite. worst case scenario - and definitely don’t do this, lol - is the hood would crash. i have been considering trying this out though, just in case anything funky does happen if you try this. i imagine it would be a very bad idea to say the least but hey, it’s for science 🤣

I have a question 👉👈🥺 You mentioning that the scripted event messages didn't pop up reminded me of a problem I had in my game for a very long time, scripted events no longer work and I don't know why? I'm just curious if there's anything that might cause such issue, because no matter what I replace the neighbourhoods with, the normal backup save or clean hood template they just don't work at all. No messages pop up, no scripted events occur, nothing and it's just weird.

No Name Sorry hmm that is odd. have you tried moving the whole game folder from my documents and letting it regenerate? or removed the neighbourhoods folder (the game will regenerate them using the templates in the programme files)? i’m sorry i can’t be of more help - i’m not the most computer savvy so tbh i googled the problem and letting the game create a new folder worked for some people. if you use reddit i recommend checking out r/sims2help. i’m somewhat active there (at least, i try to help where i can) and there are great people there far cleverer than i who might be able to help!

you probably got lucky in that most of the problems were behind the scenes/not really noticeable in game! it’s kind of like how some people can keep a hood for years despite doing tons of vbts whereas others who are careful might lose their hood in months. it’s a total crapshoot tbh 🤣

Doodle we’ve all been there 🤣 i remember the primaguide/booklets would give tips like ‘move your sims to another neighbourhood by putting them in the houses bin’ or ‘if ghosts are annoying you just delete their graves’ lmao. sometimes i miss those days where we were all just blissfully unaware of corruption and did all the things we now know we shouldn’t do. life felt simpler back then hahaha. still i am glad we have the information available now so we don’t keep doing all the vbts then getting lost and confused because our hoods have disappeared hahaha

i explain/demonstrate at around 3 minutes in, but silver shadow summed it up a lot more concisely than i could lol. you can also drag the folder out from the game and store it somewhere safe if you want to keep it!
