The story of Pickles is a LOT deeper than I thought...👀
4 months ago I accidentally bought an UNRELEASED GameCube game called Pickles. With some insane luck, I managed to get in contact with one of the actual Pickles developers! I drove 9 hours to spend a day with him and learn TONS more about Pickles, Santa Cruz Games, and even more unseen Lost Media. Yeah Tiki is still making games on some level. After the studio shut down I finished my BA and went into tech. The pay was much better, the stress was much less. Not that I didn't do my own dev work on the side for making some games here and there. It's been over 20 years since the studio closed and if you go outside, the game company logo is still there to this day. I actually work now with one of my colleagues who was there in tech. The industry is super small. You can still find some of the games we did on the market - at least the Jaks Pacific ones.

It feels so weird to shit on game devs like this. There are 1000% still devs this passionate about game dev, but unless you're an indie dev you're beholden to shareholders and shit from the big companies. I'm sure even some of the devs that crank out the yearly FIFA bs or whatever have that passion, but you gotta pay bills at the end of the day...

Hey Cake thanks for the trip down memory lane. I haven't seen Tiki or Munster in years. That group of guys and gal were super tight. Always sad when a studio closes. I actually found a bunch of old files when I was looking through my Hard Drive the other day. Mostly to do with unreleased Disney games. Anyways awesome job. Thanks for taking the drive down south and meeting up with Tiki and Munster. I would have come out to, Im just over the hill, but those guys were there since the beginning. Tiki just sent me the video link. I still have my early builds of that game, when we were still building it on Windows, including the source code and design docs, sat in a storage box. I also took the picture at 56:56 in the diner. It was my first digital camera I bought. The picture (or rather 3 pictures which you've stitched together from a panorama), along with a few others, was taken at the British pub/restaurant in Aptos/Santa Cruz, on October 22, 2002 @ 13:23 according to the clock on the camera.

What I can say is that while watching Cake's previous videos about the game, I imagined a story for it that I don't think the studio's writers could've imagined back then, well, assuming the game were to be rebuilt using updated versions of existing assets on top of a new engine for modern consoles and PCs.

What a great job! Those Santa Cruz dudes are very cool, they all seem like very genuine and kind souls. This was a nostalgia bomb for us old guys. Max, you are like the Indiana Jones of gaming. This was awesome. These guys radiate so much passion and creativity. Honestly its a shame that Pickles never saw release because it was like their baby and showcased the potential of Santa Cruz Games standing on their own -- developing a game because they genuinely wanted to make it. Thanks to you, everyone gets to see their story and the talent behind it all. It's also really endearing how Tiki remembers so many details about everyone he worked with. You can tell he's an EPIC dude who loves his profession. Anyway great video. It's been wild seeing your channel take off in such a short amount of time. Can't wait for what's next! 😁

Dude I'm loving this whole Pickles saga. The dev team deserve the spotlight! Its also pretty crazy to hear that the "Edd Ed n Eddy" game stole their stacking idea! Have fond memories of playing that game as a kid.

This video is absolutely amazing. Really no words can express just how fucking cool all of this is. You are such a lucky dude for being able to get all this information and to talk with the actual developers of the game. The last part with the SpongeBob SquarePants and the nicktoons gravjet racing has my mind absolutely spinning. I want to play that game so badly I can hardly stand it. I’m looking forward to the videos on pickles for Xbox, stacker, and pickles 2. Keep up the amazing production and work these videos are absolutely incredible.

Dumping will take a while, but I 100% plan on doing it. As far the video assets, I'll be uploading them here in the next week or two! They are much cooler with their original audio, I just didn't want to take the risk with copyright on this one!

@@cakehoarderI know you said for legal reasons you couldn't show us much of the Nick Toons racing game, but does that mean you're not going to dump it? If you dump it through a spoofed ip on the Tor browser, I highly doubt you'll get in any trouble.

I finally found the time to finish this chunky video.. seeing tiki's bright smiles and all the different SCG members coming together to share their fond memories of the company was so inspirational. it's unfortunate they didn't get to see Pickles to completion back in the day but luckily they have you providing such an in-depth documentation to us now!! thank you cake for presenting these people's passion in such a well-edited and respectful way!! i genuinely believe that NR disc couldn't have landed in better hands. please continue to preserve as much about this game as possible! While preservation of the NR disc following should also be backed up: BCA, DMI, PFI. Swiss for GameCube can do it.

Amazing pilgrimage cake. Loved the hospitality and down to earth nature of tiki and his wife, munster, mazinga, and tweak. I think it’s incredible that you uncovered Pickles after all these years and got to learn so much of its history. Absolutely incredible. Great video and I can’t wait to see you checking out pt 2 you got on loan from mazinga. PS did you even ask him about the robot and how he acquired it? I would so quickly donate to the kickstarter to bring back SCG! Please please please, make that kickstarter! I'd even happily pay almost a subscription fee (or like a repeating donation to the company if this happens). I miss SCG. I grew up on their games, and I was so sad when I learned they closed their doors for good. I'm 26 now and I always think about where SCG could've been if they could've just broken out of their zone. This is an incredible watch. I've always had a soft spot for developers who worked on licensed games, and knowing they also did Plug and Play TV games just adds to my admiration. I was fascinated by every game that popped up -- especially the Nicktoons racing title. I really hope there's some way of preserving all of their unreleased games, even if it's just footage. Thank you for putting this together, cake. Major props to the editing and production value of the video too!

Really cool if you think about it it's basically taking the metroidvania formula but the different keys and items and abilities being other physical characters that you are stacking on top of yourself and now navigating a character that is bigger and perhaps hinders your movement in some ways in order to be carrying the item / key that will get you through the door

Since Munster said that they used a chipped Xbox for game development, is it possible to image the hard drive to check to see if there's any remnants of deleted dev builds on it? There's data recovery tools available for recovering deleted files on Xboxes so that's why I was curious.

Why are Santa Cruz games not listed as developer or publisher of the 101 dalmatians game? Every source I can find says "developed by Digital Eclipse Software, Inc. and published by Eidos Interactive"
