Maybe I’m being too harsh, but not changing the battery in the smoke detector is a huge red flag for me. I’ve never once seen someone act normal when they’re confronted about it.

Literally saving lives! I fix fire systems for a living, so I have made respect. Most people think they are annoying but don't understand these systems really do save lives, and if they are beeping, there's a reason, and you should not ignore them
The fact that you found this many people with low-battery smoke detectors is hilarious. Somehow I started a racist comment thread by mentioning smoke detectors, because no white person ever had a low battery in theirs...
I remember my house was on fire and almost burnt down, the fire actually started at my neighbours house and caught our house on fire. I was trying to take all my precious belongings out the house in time and the smoke destroyed my lungs so bad. And trust me I was an everyday smoker for 10+ years and not even smoking ruined my lungs as badly as the house fire did. It was scary af like you can't comprehend how hot a house fire is and how terrifying it is until you've been inside a house on fire while it's full of smoke and you're trying to rescue your cats and panicking. One of the most scary parts of a house fire is knowing that a house can actually explode at any time if the gas lines aren't turned off, the firefighters taught me the first thing to do in a house fire is run outside and turn off your gas from the meter outside. Nobody ever talks about that though but it's so important to prevent a house literally exploding

Fun fact, well not really fun. Check the dates of your smoke detector, if they are older than 10 years. Replace the whole thing. Code requirements: smoke detector in all sleeping areas. So if a bedroom has a bed in it. It requires a smoke detector, one needs to be in the main body. These are typically found in a hallway near the kitchen. CO DETECTORS… these are on the same level of importance. If not more, These are to be on each level of the home. So if you have a 2 story, one is upstairs and one is downstairs. Please note CO detectors only go off when the PPM is greatly elevated. So if your CO detector is going off, vacate the home and shut the gas meter down. And call your fire department Now for the most important question… who am I to be giving this advice. I’m a building analyst, I specialize in diagnosing these issues in regards to combustion safety, whole home efficiency. Mechanical, plumbing and electrical all under this umbrella. I’m effectively a doctor for homes.

They specifically make the sound to be annoying so that you do it. So that means if you don't do it, you are not only willing to endanger yourself and others but that you are willing to put up with that god awful sound for an indefinite amount of time. Which means they aren't right in the head, potentially.
I'm less worried about the individual with the beep, I'm worried about their family dynamic that raises someone in a household where that's not something easily fixed.
One beep from my smoke detector and I'm driving to the nearest place that has batteries and replacing that sht. Absolutely cannot stand to hear that high-pitched bleep sound, can't understand how people live like this!

The fact that people don't get annoyed Enough by their smoke alarms beeping to change the battery is crazy. I can't put up with it . If I hear it beep I'm changing the battery ASAP. Also, if you have kids like the one lady did that's f***** up . Especially, because she's in a hotel and she don't even need to do it herself. She can call the front desk to do it.
The smoke detector is so annoying idk how people deal with it. Heard it within 5 minutes of getting back to my house.. of course I’m not any better I just took it down to silence the beeping :/ to be fair it was supposed to last 10 years lol and lasted like 6 months fuck Amazon items.

My house burned down a couple of years ago, and we didn't know there was a fire starting in the roof until the Co2 detector went off. (Faulty wiring. Poorly made house) We didn't have a normal fire detector installed properly. The Co2 detector literally saved our lives, and now we make sure everything is up to date.
When we become a first time homeowner here in the states, we heard those beeps every so often. It was so far in between, we have no idea what is making it and can't pin point where it is coming from. We timed it and it was exactly every 40 seconds. With that knowledge, we finally get to be able to pin point where it was coming from and change its battery.
