Very Nice great place to live but don't forget the Scottish people live in the highlands too, you should visit up there in the spring before the midges are out in force. Don't know why you were so unhappy/restless. It doesn't matter where you live, the place is very seldom to blame/the real problem, although LA has always been a place of extremes. A love life gone really bad is the most likely thing to depress a young, healthy, clever person (I can vouch) but you seemingly have a winner in your life if he will move a third round the planet, to a very different culture, at your whim. I do hope you are still enjoying your course at the Uni my father went to and that you both find my country a fine place to be.
