I NEARLY DIED and FROZE to DEATH! The EVil truth about ELECTRIC CARS, SNOW, ICE & ARCTIC CONDITIONS! This is a true story of how I got stuck in a Snow Storm in my Porsche Taycan Electric Car. The motor manufacturers and the government do not tell you about the pitfalls and drawbacks of owning an EV in Snow, Ice and Arctic Conditions. I ended up almost out of Electricity and a depleted battery in the middle of a snowstorm in Bakewell with nowhere for miles to charge my car! PLEASE DO NOT BUY AN ELECTRIC CAR! DO NOT BUY AN EV! Here's what happened to me and it was a nightmare, I was literally in tears.

If you get rid of your EV, what's gonna happen to all the child slaves that have to dig cobalt by hand? Total selfishness 😒
@markbradley5365
@markbradley5365 Год назад
New evs don't use cobalt (lfp batteries) but cobalt is and always has been used in refining petrol and diesel. Also used on mobile phone batteries and laptop batteries. So if your so offened by cobalt are you going to stop driving ice cars and using battery powered appliances?
@petestan
@petestan Год назад
Might you like to guess what 50% of the world’s cobalt is used for?? Oil refinement. Used then has to be disposed of. The small amount that used to be in EV batteries is fully recyclable, along with 96% of the entire battery. Starting to doubt your precious Daily Mail now?
@f-u-nkyf-u-ntime
@f-u-nkyf-u-ntime Год назад
@petestan here's a fun fact. Oil refining does not have to use Cobalt. And if all goes to plan then there will be such a demand for cobalt that oil refining, assuming that is used, won't get a look in. BTW, what about Lithium mining? That's just as toxic and uses the same mining techniques but as fat as I know, lithium isn't used in oil refining. Beginning to doubt the guardian you love so much?
@FullFact548
@FullFact548 Год назад
@Somerset Knight Oil refineries do use cobalt to remove sulphur from their fuels. Not sure where you get the lithium is toxic from, as the world's largest deposit on land is in Australia, where they protest about the pollution from oil refineries, not lithium mines. Lithium is also found in clays in the US state of Nevada, I believe, and new deposits were recently discovered in Sweden. There is also an estimated 180 billion tons in the Earth’s oceans. Lithium has also been used to treat bipolar disorder for many decades. As for concerns about cobalt, they are issues around child labour in illegal artisan mining in the DRC, but that is restricted to the black market and has been sensationalised by the media. It is an issue created by poverty, like most other forms of forced labour.

The government isn't pushing anything onto us. The growth in EV sales is purely down to market forces. Legacy automakers have been scrabbling to catch ever since sales of the Tesla Model 3 ripped into the market for combustion Audi, Mercedes, and BMW. In the UK last year, more people bought an EV than bought a diesel with only petrol car sales outperforming them. All this government has done is reduce grants on new EVs and hand out 120 new licences for oil and gas exploration in the North Sea 😢

Look up the uses of cobalt before spouting rubbish about materials and child labour. Cobalt mining doesn't kill children, poverty does. @Beorn.
@Beorn. Год назад
@FullFact548 I think I may have this wrong but it seems your justification for child labour in the DRC is its helping the health of our children? Don't think about the 550,000 hectares of forest cleared in Indonesia to mine for nickel for the batteries or how many miles evs have to be driven to reach offset for the excess c02 created in an evs manufacture. In fact ignore all the inconvenient truths . Definitely don't need to consider the carbon created installing the 3 phase grid required to support them and given the UK had to switch on coal fired power stations last night to meet demand its probably best if we ignore that as well. Some narrow minded people claim "oh my electricity comes from green sources only" but that power was probably boiling a few kettles until someone plugs into their charger. Don't ignore that despite the power stations being on, DEFRA reported the air quality across the uk yesterday was all in the green! If I may I would like to expand on this, take Wales, chargers are few and far between, the grid isn't up to it and I believe they have only achieved somewhere in the region of 6% of target for "greening up!" Please correct me if I'm wrong so how much c02 to dig up Gwynedd alone to lay cables and install the infrastructure? Just an example...

Once worked at a GM fuel cell research facility in upstate NY, this was back in the days of the GM EV1, the engineers all had EV1's for commuting to the facility which were charged at the parking areas, they were sufficient for a round trip of 150 miles in warm weather but upstate NY winters are brutal (Buffalo NY), the EV1 could do the commute without any added draw on the batteries in winter, that meant resistance heating was not available, you froze or drove a gasoline powered vehicle.

*We had very cold snowy weather come here in Wisconsin* back in January, and we had a boat load of stranded electric car owners because the chargers broke when it got really cold. The same thing happened out in the New England area as well. Lots and lots of electric car/truck owners having to get hotels that week. Many of their batteries just died right in the road, in fact. Yet, all gas cars worked perfectly fine. And the gas pumps just worked and do actually get fixed if they do break. Electric charge stations aren't maintained like gas pumps are. Plus, that electric cable gets as hard and stiff as steel rebar when it's very cold. LOL! And the charge time takes forever compared to filling a gas car. 😅 Now that's it's officially springtime now, though we're averaging in the 40s for temperatures. Though we did get a couple of inches of snow yesterday. But it all melted off right away. It will be nice and warm and sunny here very soon now. We get beautiful springs and summers here. So electric car owners won't have to worry anymore until next winter.

I experienced something similar in my Kia E-Niro last winter. Freezing conditions came on very quickly when I was on my way back to Nottingham from London. I was heading to a charge point and the mileage range suddenly dropped from about 40 miles to zero in a split second. I headed to the nearest charge point which was at a golf club/hotel in Leicestershire and the car died on the long driveway leading up to the golf club. I ended up rolling the car down to the golf club reception and had to stay there the night. I've been recovered three time because I couldn't find a functional or available charge point. I'm 18 months into a 2 year business lease and I've told them to come and collect it early. Never again! I've replaced it with a Euro 6 Diesel Volvo XC60.

With great fanfare and glowing reports in the news papers, touted by the politicians, our school district acquired the first electric school bus in Alaska. This last year the robotics team interviewed the owner of the bus company on how well that was working out. Seems an electric bus costs a lot more than a diesel bus. It also can't go out in extreme cold, and it gets cold here, our cut off for school is 50 below F, that bus isn't safe enough and reliable enough in such cold to be used. One good thing about the electric cars, you can tell the marks easier, they are the ones with the electric car.

I really wish people would STOP referring to oil, gas and natural gas as fossil fuels, it's ridiculous. Firstly, both are extracted deep below the earth's surface. Oil for example at between 16,000 to 20,000 feet. Fossils are found on the earth's surface and there have been very few finds of these, certainly not enough to make fuel. To do that, even if it were possible which it isn't as most are found in rocks, there would have to be trillions of them. The correct term for oil, gas and coal would be naturally occurring fuels as they are produced by nature and processed by man.
@grumpyoldgit8254
@grumpyoldgit8254 Год назад
I Think you will find you are way of the mark, These resources were formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago, remains were covered by layers of rock and sand. Under specific temperature and pressure conditions the remains were turned into oil and/or natural gas. Coal was formed from the vast forests, when we were coal mining we used to see many fossilised remain of ferns, and that was half a mile deep underground, Coal is coal and what you mine you sell as you mine it, gas is nott processed either and oil is only processed to seperate the various substances.
@munehaus
@munehaus Год назад
They only "naturally" occur where both fossils (and other prehistoric biomass) and great pressures come together though. So really they should be called "rare fossil fuels", as the supply is limited by the number of fossils of organisms (and other prehistoric biomass) that died in the past. Once it's gone, it's gone and it's getting harder and harder to find and when we do find it, the people that control it are often not friendly.
@grumpyoldgit8254
@grumpyoldgit8254 Год назад
@@munehaus Point is, they are fossils, and if we ever need coal again the uk we still 300 yrs of reserves
@munehaus
@munehaus Год назад
@@grumpyoldgit8254 300 years is a very false claim, though we do have at least a decade or more. The issue is not reserves, so much as who controls them and how hard they are to get to. If it costs £50 to extract enough oil for a litre of petrol or we have to fight a war to get hold of it, that's not really much help to anyone, yet that's what we're looking at with some of the newer finds. The other issue is "peak" production. Once we know we're past the peak, supply won't be able to keep up with even current demand, so prices will skyrocket as only the rich and governments will be able to afford the cost. Some say we're already at peak oil, though personally I think that's also a few years a way. But not many years.

Hi, I am a Brit living in the middle of Canada, 17 years now. My wife drives a Suburu Forrester, famed for 4wd in snow and icy conditions, I drive a 4x4 Chev Silverado. I am not a wealthy guy, but I am smart enough not to take any notice of Governments BS about how wonderful EVs are LOLOL. I will not be trusting our lives to a lump of compressed dirt from China. We often get cold snaps here of minus 25 for days at a time, so far this season it has gone down to minus 34. We have to plug our vehicles in, to start like an electric element that helps the oil not sludge, and be harder to start. I get the oil changed at 5,000kms on both. As you bought a Porsche you can afford the folly of your ways, I wish you good luck getting rid of it, my advice get a Suburu, basic but good value, and they go through slippery conditions better than any other car out there, trust me, I have tested ours big time, through 10 inch snow, NO problem, only when the tyres leave the road surface will it fail, due to no grip. Even then if you are a bit skilled, you can get through. Regards Tony.

Another problem with electric cars is using the heating in winter can significantly reduce the battery power and range. At least with petrol and diesels heat is a byproduct from the combustion engine, but in an electric car the heater uses a lot of battery power. Same in summer using air-con in an electric car wastes battery power so not nice being stuck in a summer traffic jam either with no air-con. Electric cars have to be one of the most stupidest inventions. Ok if you live in a city and never leave that city but no good for long journeys.

Crikey Lee, I had no idea you'd gone through that. If you'd had an elderly and/or infirm person in the car, that could have killed them. I found your channel through a collaboration video with Geoff Buys Cars, and quickly fell 'in love' with the food reviews. They're absolutely brilliant. But I've been intrigued by the EV videos too, and can't believe how horrendous your experiences have been. I couldn't live like that, and I really do worry about you in the Taycan. That amount of stress and anxiety can't be good for your health. I can't wait for the day when you can hand back the Taycan and replace it with something that has a proper engine. And if I ever win the lottery, there's a nice V-8 petrol engined Lexus LC500 with your name on it. Any colour you like, on me. Genuinely mean that. In the meantime, stay safe my friend, and look after yourself in that silly EV.
