To be fair, he attempted to make a very awkward story light-hearted but it was a bad call to put her at the butt of the joke. In general, yeah, laughter is great stress relief but you have to be tactful with the timing, direction and theme of the joke if you're trying to successfully ease the tension for a specific individual.
