As someone currently renovating my first home, this channel is such a comforting place to visit when I'm feeling overwhelmed by all my projects. Makes me feel less alone :)

Very off subject, but your background music is simply the BEST, both calm and upbeat, without being distracting. I appreciate that. It adds a nice quality to your already terrific postings.

One task I enjoyed doing in my old house was pulling up the carpet. The carpet was gross and had really been bothering me and it cost me nothing to pull it up. I think because I hated the carpet so much, I enjoyed the process of pulling out all the carpet nails and staples and edging and then being able to sweep the wooden floors. The amount of dirt that was under the carpet - ugh.

George, if you look at the wallpaper (if you dare touch it when it's fusty) the design will tell you what era it was put up. Some of that wallpaper could be hundreds of years old! They used to just paste the new wallpaper over the top... just like a time capsule. It's pretty amazing, really.

You always seem like a nice man, and it's even better to see you hands-on with this project. I'd have left the loft hatch and ladder in place, and working, but hey. Nothing wrong with a loft hatch in a bedroom, if need be. The weird thing here, from the video, is how big the air space is/was between the panelling frame and the old walls. I guess with these old houses there's the roof leaking issues which caused the internal decline, and then there's penetrating damp through the walls - made worse in rainy and windy weather. And then there's the traditional rising damp you get in old buildings, down to the lack of a damp course. In all three cases, ventilation and internal heating help, plus having people live there 24/7. A word burner is always good for dry heat, and better than running a dehumidifier. I'm also on older tradesperson, called Billy. So, hullo to Scottish Bill, your window man.

I used to have a 200-year-old cottage. It was held up by woodchip wallpaper. Nice work, George. Thanks for sharing

The rope and weight system is "old school" and rarely done in newer houses, but it's a superior way. The windows will open and close more easily and smoothly than most modern ones, and they're in keeping with the style of the house.

If I remember correctly, you don't drink coffee? Maybe you can buy one of those "just press this button and coffee will appear" coffee machine, like Senseo. They are relatively cheap and they'll make one cup for your guest. You can't mess up and I don't think anyone really cares. Especially if they come to work for you. When they did our street, we gave the workers coffee from our machine in our old cups (my husband even gave one worker my old Titanic (with Jack and Rose from the movie on it) cup 🙈) and muffins I bought from the store, and they were really just happy as a clam👍

Are you going to restore the fireplace? It would add so much charm to your bedroom!

92 F (33) C in Florida today. Humidity 75%. Scotland looks downright perfect today because it's going to get hotter this week! I love sash windows, and we still use them here. I think the stones were probably from the original construction of your house. They would bring up more than they needed to put in, different sizes to fit them perfectly. New England homes that are stone usually have a few in the attic too. If they have cement on the edges, that was from a lazy renovation person. I'm glad to see you're keeping busy because that means more videos for us. I like the Sunday video schedule too. You're doing a great job of keeping us entertained George! Give Junior a pat for me please. I miss her cuteness.

It was wasn’t unusual to wallpaper directly on to plastered walls George, have come across countless rooms with stuck-fast remnants of bygone paper. Spray fairly hot water on it, it helps but not always very effective. Love your videos, thank you 😊

Good for you taking on the tasks that you can. No one would blame you for hiring out the work that is skilled. Great you and your Dad can work together.

One room in my old house in the U. S. had cedar boards covered by felt covered by several layers of wallpaper covered by layers of paint. Ugh--so much work to get to the bottom of it. The other rooms may well be the same, but someone had added a layer of wallboard, and I decided I'd done enough excavation.

Hope you got double glazing when you got your lovely new windows made. He did a great job!

I'm pretty new here. I think it's been just a few days since I watched my first video. It was from a year ago. So, I'm trying to catch up but am having trouble with the timing. The first ones were mostly about the cat. (which is how I got started) Then there was a move to a new place without stairs?? Yesterday, they seemed to be about ANOTHER new place and going through all of the buying of furniture, etc. Those seemed to be from about 4 months ago. Next was one from 7 days ago doing reno work. Now, this one from just 4 HOURS ago is about another new place and doing more reno work? Would someone fill me in on a timeline and what's going on? Somewhere in there, another cute kitty joined Junior. I really like Georges' videos. He seems like such a nice young man. Very quiet, non-judgemental, loves his cats (that alone makes him an excellent person) and is a hard worker.

Great job. Clean up and removal before a professional arrives saves time and "time is money". Nice windows. I prefer a Pry Bar instead of a crow bar. I think they are more useful because they are flat and not as heavy as a crow bar. Set of 4 pry bars on Amazon $22 US. They had a 3 foot Pry/Crow Bar $25 US had never seen that configuration before. Thanks George I enjoy a good clean up video. I hope Ryobi sends you a complete tool kit. Yippee.

WOW! No decaying bodies (human or animal) behind those old walls? Impressive ... that was one of my primary 'worries' that caused me to state that I was "having a good day, until your post"! I was sooo concerned that you would run into such, or mold, or worse ... tearing out old, unknown stuff - ALONE!!! Oh my gosh George! I love the discoveries inside old walls. You have to restore the fireplaces! Even if they are just restored to a visual level (not functional). They look amazing.

Patchy, nothing inspires me more than someone else's sweat equity. I don't have a lovely old tiny house (my house is plenty tiny) but I do need to do some massive reorganization to live my best life, and you help that with every new video. I think a lot of house in the past did the same. When I did my parents house when I pulled the paper off, the wall came with it!

Please make this into a separate playlist on the channel with all the videos included. I had watched one or two in the series before and wanted to watch them all and it was a little difficult to see which ones were part of this vs the tiny house. I think that makes the whole thing more bingeable. I really loved all the videos and just watched them back to back, you give me a lot of motivation to get stuff done!

You said just what I was thinking about some repetitive tasks…they can be soothing and meditative. Now I can’t say I enjoy all repetitive tasks, I’m not a big fan of ones that are physically difficult, like scrubbing floors 😞, but things like chopping vegetables, vacuuming, office work, I usually enjoy or at least don’t mind doing.

I love seeing you taking on new things, it reminds me of when we renovated our early 1900s house in Cambridgeshire! Our walls were crumbling like crazy due to damp and were held on with 2 layers of wood chip wallpaper. I can't wait to see the next video!

We went through exactly what you’re going through George. When we finished, we said we should’ve bulldozed the old house and built new because we still have an old house that keeps having problems. I understand the Scottish are into restoring or renovating but it’s a huge job,

I agree with you George on the repetitive tasks. Sometimes the simplest tasks can be the most relaxing. I like sewing and there are many steps to get to the point where I can start the seams. I love when I get to that point and feeding the fabric and watching the needle go up and down, doing its job to knot the thread. I find it very meditative 😊 I’m enjoying watching your process 😀

I’ve seen lots of comments about your soothing voice. My 4 year old was asleep next to me while I watched this and he didn’t stir once!

Just a thought, it might be worthwhile to wire these rooms with CAT-6A for networking. Ideally, I would do two drops in each room (right next to each other). It'll be so much harder once the drywall goes up. Even if all you do is put the boxes into these rooms then spool up extra in the loft (i.e.: the other end isn't connected to anything), it'll come in handy to have done in the future.

I'm looking forward to the "where the f did these steps come from?" episode when you decide to renovate the attic in a few years time I was going to put a "no not the wall stones!!" reply and let you panic but I have no idea. Odd thing to be leaving there. Maybe a 1700s feature. Lol

Your space is looking great. How surprising to learn that you can still get windows with the weights in them. I lived in an old house in the US with that type of window and loved them. Until a rope broke and the weight fell and the window wouldn't stay up. But I learned how to repair that rope and felt so accomplished.

I also like repetitive tasks. It's okay to hire professionals for certain parts of the house :) I had two wisdom teeth removed last Wednesday and when I watched your video I felt no pain. Your videos are really relaxing. :)

I found that mundane repetitive physical jobs helped me to relax when something was Really weighing on my mind. I could sort things, clean , reorganize, and get rid of things that I didn't need. In doing this, I completed a task that needed to be done, and enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment. Afterward, though, it was as though my entire body released an enormous sigh ! Now, I could sort out what was really on my mind. Your project is larger than I originally though, good on you !

Have you thought about pulling out the timber and plastering the walls directly or would that not offer enough insulation?

id be keeping the fireplace as a room feature....even if boxed in yould still have a recess big enough for small chest of drawers or bookshelves,etc.

I would remove all those wood battens; these properties were not made to have a "cavity" insulation. You'll end up with a lot of damp behind it.
