Ok Tall… It’s about that time. You say you’ve never taken a slow speed training course? I can’t allow one of my friends to be denied something so important. As I often say, I don’t care how long you’ve been riding or how many miles you’ve ridden, seat time doesn’t equal practice time. I expected several people to agree with some of the things that you said because most riders really don’t know how to ride a motorcycle properly. That’s not to say you’re one of them. I listened to your words very carefully. But the one thing you said that spoke volumes to me was your fear of dropping your motorcycle. That fear is shared by the majority of motorcycle riders for the reason I stated earlier. Only 2% of motorcycle riders are actually proficient at riding a motorcycle. I’m trying my best to increase that number. I say all of this to say, my Road King Special (Angel) is ready for you. Get your butt to Pooler, GA for a Practice Session brother! Just me and you. We will record it for our viewers and subscribers!👍🏾👍🏾 What say you? Preload!!! And Keep It Loaded!!!! ©

Some people go all their lives without ever needing an air bag or a seatbelt...until they do. The odds are not stacked in our favor as riders. I want to do everything to improve those odds, which means better skills. You never know when you will need them.

Totally agree. I saw a police team do some pretty cool slow riding. Picked up some tips from them, but I was taught U turns the same way Tall does them here. Although the best tip I did get was look where you want the bike to go.

Oh Tall...no, no, no. Regarding having 1 foot down, It doesn't matter whether you are going right or left, you should be proficient in either direction, it doesn't take that much practice. If you get hit from behind, it isn't going to make one iota of difference whether you have 1 or 2 feet down. At that point, preventing the bike from falling is the least of your problems. Doing the slow turn you showed without leaning is great in a parking lot with no one there. But using your example, someone is coming up behind you fast, your best option might be a fast, tight U-turn. You need to spend more time with Robert. Preload!! #BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle !

I just bought a XL1200X "48" this past Saturday. It's only got a 2.1 gal tank, with a range of only 91 miles. I'm switching it to a 4.4 gal tank so I can get closer to 200 mile range. This is my 6th bike but 1st Hog. I learned biker etiquette via CHA and San Diego Typhons (allied with CHA) beginning at my age of 11 & 12 in the mountains of California, San Diego, Tijuana. I've a driving test/ MC endorsement appt for next Wednesday. With my other bikes I never did have an endorsement. The tip regarding dragging the rear brack with adequate throttle in order to make a tight u-turn without a lean I will exercise particularly for the driving test. I've not rode since '90. Thanks for the advice👍

I just subscribed. Thanks so much for this video. I watch a number of channels and want to hear everyone's opinion. Your thought process, I believe, is a good one. You are definitely more firmly planted with both feet on the ground with a light touch on the front brake. If someone comes from behind quickly, I would bet that slowly engaging the friction zone will not help you. It may be that ONLY aggressive action at the throttle will give you escape. We have Total Control classes nearby and MotoJitsu down south. I plan on attending both of them this summer. You make me want to ride! Thanks again.

I would like to chime in as someone with a short inseam (I can BARELY get both feet down solidly on my Ultra Limited). I've taken Ride Like a Pro classes on 3 different styles of bikes. All of what you say in this video is WAY better than having to pick your bike up. When I'm on any bike taller than a cruiser I cannot stop or duck walk it with both feet down. The bike leaning slightly left with one foot solidly planted on the ground is way more stable than the bike upright on my tippy toes. The good thing about developing the "proper" technique is that it works on any bike. Even 2 up loaded down with luggage I almost always use 1 foot, but there's situations where 2 is more comfortable or makes more sense.

But being an older rider I feel way more confident and stable with two feet down at a stop. Thank you thank you for making this point. I can immediately cover the rear brake without having to start with only one foot down. I practice weekly. I practice swerving and emergency stops often, this is a must have skill in my opinion and will save your life. Thanks Tall, I appreciate you sharing your years of experience with us.

Practicing slow speed gives you the confidence more options and a heightened awareness. This translates to you being safer. If you have drop guards and drop guard protection you won’t hurt your bike if it drops. The more tools you have in your arsenal the safer you are. Slippery surfaces mean no leans gravel/ice /snow. You are a good rider sir all of us can get better. If you don’t want to drop your bike take a class on a rented bike sir.

I've been riding 26 years and I'll duckwalk. Sure I can pull a crawl slow U without putting my feet down, but I'm not trying to impress anyone with my riding skills. I'm just using the 2-3 open parking spots to make a easy U turn so I don't have to walk my bike backwards into the spot. I'll duckwalk in traffic as well. I'm too dang old to worry about impressing anyone with my riding skills.

I highly disagree with 99% of the things you said in this video. You mitigate risk with skill. You obtain skill by learning correct techniques and practicing. With those skills, you will have no fear of dropping your motorcycle because you are confident in your skills. It's not about looking cool, though you may look cool because too many riders lack the confidence and skill to do it themselves. This is why we should promote practicing slow speed practicing. PRELOAD and KEEP IT LOADED.
@TravelingTall
@TravelingTall Год назад
Lol, I knew that you would, but this works for me. I've rode with you before, and you're a good rider, but out of the 4 things I said tell me which statement you have an issue with? The way I do U-turns? Duck walking under certain circumstances? Stopping with both feet down? No lean U-turns? Is there something else? I'd love your feed back.
@6doorseventy4
@6doorseventy4 Год назад
@@TravelingTall maybe 99% was a bit exaggerated. LOL That said, I think this video does a disservice to the importance of slow speed skill which is an important and necessary skill. There will be people who see this video and use it as an excuse to not learn or practice because they feel they're doing it right solely because they haven't dropped their bike. Your U-turn technique is fine and a lean isn't necessary, until it is. Duck walking can be practical at times but those are few and far between in my opinion. I think you take comfort in having your feet down because you're tall enough to have them planted. But someone who isn't tall won't be planted and that will increase the risk of dropping the bike where using proper technique works for everyone regardless of height. Stopping and then putting both feet down is personal preference so I don't have a problem with it. To sum it up (mostly because I have to go), you say this is what has worked for you and I'm not disputing that. But I equate that with people who say "this is how we've always done it". That doesn't make it right and it certainly doesn't make it safer. Safety increased and risk is decreased with skill.

Yes I believe everyone should practice. Thats why I started with the disclaimer that this wasn't a knock on Slow riding courses. I even recommended that they take one. Practice is important, especially obstacle avoidance and hard braking. Just the other day I helped a guy pick up his bike out the middle of the street because he had a car pull out in front of him and he grabbed to much front brake a down he went. Every motorcycle rider should practice. It could save your life.
@6doorseventy4
@6doorseventy4 Год назад
@@bryanthumphries5411 this is where you're wrong and why I feel this video causes confusion. Nobody is suggesting you scrape your floorboards. You don't even need to lean to an 18' U-turn. But you do have to have good control of your clutch, throttle, and rear brake. That comes with practice and learning the correct technique.

Good video. Very realistic and it actually puts reason to why most people most likely do it the way you do because its instinctive. I think the slow rider courses are important to learn as well, however if you have to practice something like that so often, some of us just don’t have the time. Especially if you live in a cold climate like MN and you’re working 12 hours per day. You really want to just get out and ride. I also think that some of the slow maneuvering practices can possibly hurt you when you have a situation that your instincts will naturally get you out of but because you’re trying to learn and implement a new technique, that maybe a recipe for disaster at a certain given time. No disrespect to the other brother because I think what he teaches is extremely important. However what is explained in this video is too. It made me feel much more confident that I am actually doing a good job as a rider. The other videos of slow maneuvering had me really questioning myself when instinctively I feel safe the way I’ve been riding for the last 7 years. I definitely am not a master at riding so I am not discrediting anyone who has more knowledge than me but I do feel that we should all do what is the most comfortable for us.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle Год назад
Charles believe it or not, you're more likely to be hurt following your instincts on a motorcycle than using muscle memory, which is developed through practice. I say this at the end of my videos. "If you have time to ride your motorcycle, you have time to practice." This is a huge responsibility. So to say I don't have time to practice, I just want to ride is not the best strategy. We are grown men... Boys do what they want to do... Men do what needs to be done. I'm not criticizing or preaching. I just want you to try and look at this from a different perspective. Preload!!! Incredibly irresponsible. Improper riding is dangerous to everyone. Riders, drivers, and pedestrians. There is a reason why there is a right way; thousands of instructors and a litany of research certainly contradict most of your “advice.” Folks will take this a the “right way,” regardless of any disclaimer, simply because of your popularity. You are a role model to many, whether that was your intention or not. Propagation of improper techniques not only harms your reputation, but it will likely result in physical harm done to someone using improper techniques because “that’s how Tall does it.” I’m a fan, and have been since the beginning, but this one is wrong.

Which technique is wrong? Please point it out. Duck walking when surface conditions are dangerous for the rider and others? Making a U-turn without leaning? Surely not that, that's a skill that takes practice to do, with coordination, balance, and clutch control. I never said don't lean the bike. I lean the bike when I'm making a tighter u-turn but lean increases risk on slippery surfaces and unless you are certain and familiar with the surface you are riding on, and how can you be unless your in a parking lot that you always practice in, then it's best to be able to turn in away that minimizes the risk of losing the front end in real world situations such a unknown parking lot conditions. Furthermore, a beginner isn't turning the bars full lock in a u-turn, someone how's doing that is confident with handling his or hers motorcycle. Also, let me ask you this? How do you make a u-turn on in the rain?

@@TravelingTall Yes. Duck walking a motorcycle is dangerous. What happens when someone who's not 6'6" steps in hole, slips on gravel, gets their foot caught under the bike? How to you compensate for your feet not being at the controls? You can't shift, and you have no access to one the most important parts of a motorcycle that is moving slowly, the rear brake. It's whole lot easier to use clutch, throttle and brake than it is to hold up 800+ lbs with your legs. Is making a very slow, wide u-turn, without leaning the bike dangerous? No, I wouldn't call it dangerous in and of itself, but what is dangerous is making it seem that if somehow folks can manage this, that they should feel accomplished and confident that they can safely turn their bike around in a situation as dynamic as riding a motorcycle in traffic. In the rain, I make a u-turn the same way I make it when it's dry, slowing down for specific conditions as necessary--same as in any other vehicle. Motorcycles need to lean, and therefore motorcycle tires--in the simplest of terms--are rounded to ensure that there is grip when the bike is leaning. There is significant precedent on this. My entire point is that skillful, confident control of your motorcycle, in any situation is a must. It is something that EVERY RIDER should strive for. Being able to do a u-turn, or a figure 8 in a parking lot, or to be able to control your motorcycle in forward motion (fast OR slow) regardless of your size or strength has nothing to do with looking impressive, or showing off. They also have nothing to do with a big empty parking lot. Those skills DIRECTLY relate to everyday riding. To me, this video is saying, hey--I've never dropped my bike, see? Just do what I do and it's good enough. And to me, that is irresponsible and potentially dangerous, not to mention contradictory to what instructors all over the world teach, and more recently as it relates may of those instructors' content on RU-vid. Just my opinion man. Like I said, I've been a fan and I'm still a fan, but I can't agree with you on this one.
