These are hunting boots- they remind me of many of the northeastern hunting boots- the L.L.Bean reference was spot on. Many boot enthusiasts are very focused on the Northwest Logger style but this style is more common and more practical in the Northeast and Great Lakes states.
I love these boots. I picked up a pair in tan. Agree totally about the laces. Just don't fit the style of the boot. I replaced mine with Guarded Goods paracord and much improved. I'm not sure about the D-rings, but they do function well in keeping the boots tied and allow for quick adjustment on longer hikes. It has been snowing/raining/sleeting a ton since I got these. My feet have remained bone dry and warm. I'm a huge fan of your channel and this boot! HNY!
@@billystpaul8907 Not bad and better than I expected on a wedge sole. Getting traction front to back is really quite good. I did notice some side slipping when the tread ripples fill with deeper snow.
Well done review (as always) and thank you. These boots actually reminds me (during my childhood and teen years - I am currently 70) of what was called an “Upland Game Boot.” Mine were made by the original Irish Setter company (pre-Red Wing days). I got them for Christmas when I was twelve years old (fortunately my foot had quit growing at a size 11 by then). I wore them for almost 20 years before I finally retired them. At this point in my life I have more boots than I will ever “wear out,” but if I needed a new pair I would definitely take a look at these.
Great timing for this video. I own this boot. Sat in my closet for about a month waiting to be broken in at a new year's cottage trip. Been wearing them exclusively since Thursday. The walnut bison. Can confirm that these are amazing. Got them in the bison. The stock laces are garbage but had some cougar brown leather laces (from Thursday boots aka cobbler's choice) laying around. Bootgasmic perfection.
I liked the look alot and almost bought them my only caveat and I thought a big one is they aren't fully gusseted and if I'm outdoors in the field its a big thing for me.
I just got these boot and absolutely love them, but the two things I HATE are those thin laces and D-rings at the top. I put leather laces on my Brass Boots (which would partially solve my D-ring issues) but ordered some paracord laces, which will solved minor displeasure. Enjoyed the review.
I have the field boot in Badalassi Veg Saddle Tan and they are awesome! Traction was awesome granted I live in NYC...still I get compliments around SOHO. 😁
Happy New Carl.. Another nice review. 2 of my favorite things, Bison leather and Moc Toe. Might have to put these on my list.. Thanks again for your output and video's...
I like how you pointed out the grip. These are not your traditional rubber or polyurethane wedge soles, I believe they’re EVA foam. They also have that wave pattern which you pointed out.
I discovered GS a few years ago and have several pair of diesels and ottowas. The quality for price is amazing. I got a pair of these exact field boots about a week ago and they are top notch as always. You are bang on about the laces. I swapped them out 5 min. after unboxing...lol. I'm not a fan of the d-rings, but get styling-wise I get what they were after. Overall another fantastic offering from GS.
Great review. I've had mine for almost a year. The laces have been my only complaint too. They're good though. My job requires me to be in the office and at job sites so these have been an excellent boot for both.
I hate lace hooks on boots. To me, they’re not practical. I like the D-rings that the Grant Stone has. I think that these are a good do almost everything boot. I wouldn’t wear these while pouring concrete, but if you want to free up some space in your closet or can only budget one pair of boots, you should be good.
I replaced D-rings with speed hooks and thin laces with leather laces. It would be nice if GS shipped them with two different sets of laces instead of same thin ones.
Can we get an update on the wesco boots ? Sorry that may have came across wrong, I’m a timber faller and boot guy and love a little style in my boots and have always worn whites and I’m really looking at the wescos after your review and would love an update on your wesco boots. Thank you my friend and have a wonderful new year and keep up the good work.
Honestly the only thing I wish they’d offer in these is an option for a heeled sole cause I really just don’t like wedges at all but I adore the look of these boots aside from that.
They are nice boots, I have three pair. Only complaint is they are too light for the type of boot they are design esthetic. Thicker leather and a real double layered toe would do these boots wonders. My only complaint. Also I can't recommend Pisgah Range laces enough. Every pair of boot I buy get the laces replaced with paracord style laces.
Hi. I was curious about the thickness of the leather in comparison to redwing moc toes. Regarding durability etc. especially out in the field where these are meant for. How have they lasted for you? Do you use them for any specific type of work/ locations or mainly casual everyday easy wear? I really want these in the black but if they’re not durable enough, I’ll have to go with the Whites Perry Select 8”. The wait time is about 2-3 months. :(
I try to buy American made as much as possible, but I don't dislike buying Chinese products and these are really something else. I had never even considered Grant Stone, but this model definitely caught my eye.
@@zekeyeager1458 I'm not a boot collector so there's only so many pairs I have at a single point. While I have not owned Indonesian made boots, Rose Anvil made a video about them and they were EXTREMELY impressive for the money. Just not my type.
Great video. Thank you :) Have you heard of Truman Boots? Handmade in the USA. They cost a bit more, but I think it's worth it. I recently received mine and they are incredible. It was after deciding whether I should buy GSs or Trumans. Although I'm not from the US, I prefer to purchase made-in-the-USA products when I have the option to.
Is there any good moc toe with steel toe boots out there? I like moc toe in general and have some of them but my work requires having at least steel toe. I don't necessarily need steel/composite sole but toe must be protective so if something fell on my knee, I can have my insurance activated if I go to any hospital.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of their laces either. Guarded goods makes awesome laces for boots. You get the braided round cord boots to dress down your footwear
When Rose Anvil cut the Grant Stone moctoe boots in half and compared them directly to Red Wings, he found that they were, in fact, good quality boots. There were a few cases where the Grant Stone was ever so slightly better (but sometimes just a matter of preference rather than being objectively better) and a few cases where the Red Wing was better. So, a good boot for sure. But… Considering that they are made in China while still being more expensive? I can’t imagine buying these over Red Wing. With Red Wing, I’m buying into the heritage of the company, I’m getting a boot that’s made in the USA, and I’m actually saving money.
I remember from the video some of the differences were that Grant Stone (GS) used veg tan versus chrome tan for Redwing (RW) GS had a full grain leather midsole versus rubber and GS had a full grain leather counter versus a leatherboard. I think these aspects would account for the price difference.
@@tommysmith7031 I agree that they would account for a more expensive boot, if both were made in USA. But “made in USA” typically accounts for a big price jump, as well, which is why I am surprised that the Grant Stones are still more expensive despite being made in China 🤷♂️
I think for the price, it's worth buying American made boots and supporting our own, considering you can buy American for a similar price or cheaper. Redwing are cheaper and great quality along with Thorogoods.
When it comes to shoes the fit, comfort and quality matters most to me, i am very hard to please and i don't own many pairs. But if a shoe fits and looks the way i like i would buy it even if it's made in fecking Kabul
I will not deny that these are an interesting nice looking boot that seems to offer a lot for the money, and I will not say that being made in China makes them bad either. Being made in China is just a personal deal breaker for me in the footwear category. I do give a thumbs up to the founder of the company though. He really does seem to be taking advantage of Chinas cutrate labor costs in a good way, to offer the customer more instead of just making higher profit margins. The best of a bad situation I would say.
Where's that thermal long sleeve from Carl? I love Grant Stone ( I have 4 pairs), but I think this boot is ugly as sin, and I agree with your points about its purpose. It's a Frankenstein boot.
Feel the same way. I’ve got my second Grant Stone boot on the way but the Field Boot is just not for me. Don’t care for the extra panels on the vamp or the D rings or the 8 inch shaft and padded cuff. Would prefer the Red Wing 875
I’m with you guys. This is not an attractive boot. The original Brass Boot appeals to me much more. Too much going on with this one. Just way too busy!
@Frank Lucas exactly. I think they tried to create something that no one has really seen before just to do something different. But in making it, they stole elements from many different styles and it just doesn't mesh.
Agreed, buying from China is like buying from Russia; they both have militaristic dictatorships. We need to be careful which businesses we support. All businesses pay taxes and some of those taxes are spent on militaries that will attack us someday.
You can do as you please. I would actually say that politically correct = when a teenager says they are a rebel. With increasing tensions between US and China, being anti-China is incredibly politically correct and exactly what the government wants. Not that nationalism was ever at a low, but we're going to be seeing more and more of it.
For me, the China thing is not wanting to support a country that has concentration camps, actively engages in slavery, suppresses their own people, and actively spies on our country. I have no doubt that Chinese made products can be good, and these boots as well as everything else that Grant Stone makes are very likely awesome quality, especially given the price. But just like how I would not have wanted to purchase German made products during the late 1930s and early 1940s, I don't want to actively purchase Chinese made products now. And I know that a huge percentage of things I buy are made in China, but when I can, I actively try not to buy the Chinese version and opt for a competing product made basically anywhere else. And boots like these are a luxury that nobody actually needs. And for luxury goods, I will not opt for the Made in China options. Basically, I will buy made in America if it is an option and I can afford it. Then I will buy made in any other country other than China if possible. And if China is the only option, then I will settle for buying something made in China. Nothing against the Chinese people, on the contrary, they are victims of their own government, but I cannot actively use my money to support concentration camps and slavery if I have alternatives.
Review gaucho ninja! Especially the shell cordovan variants. They are the highest quality bespoke barefoot shoes for those who cant wear narrow boots like these.
they have the field boot with speed hooks at the top. didn't know if you're aware of that or not. I am one of those people that like GS when window shopping and until they move their factory out of china I will always find a way to boycott them. I have a great reason though. they do make good boots for the price but as long as they are mic, I will not support them. thanks for your video though.
The price point isn't worth the compromise. China makes everything already so when you have the ability to buy American you should take that opportunity. That's only my opinion. But I'd rather support as many Made in USA products as I possibly can. This principle has cost me a lot of money and some ridicule from my coworkers on jobs... but I walk the walk.
I want to like it but the fact it’s Chinese… I just can’t. American made means something to me, especially when they make an effort to source all US materials.
I would just feel weird giving China money every day when I strap on my boots to go to work. I give China enough dough that I dont feel bad spending 300-600$ for a nice pair of American made boots.
Not sure about the bargain thing. They are up there in price. Thursday is a much better deal IMHO. For the price of a Grant Stone; Nicks, Franks or Whites are in reach.
