"I never thought I'd be homeless at 58" ~ Cheri

First thing Cheri said to me as I walked into her weekly-rate hotel room was "I never thought I'd be homeless at 58". Sadly, as the boomer generation is approaching their retirement years, and so many lost their house and savings in this past recession, more and more seniors will end up without adequate housing!
Even though Cheri is disabled, she says she has to find work because disability income is not enough to survive. Finding work even for a young college graduate is hard these days. Older folks have extreme challenges because without working they don't have enough money to survive and who hires people close to their senior years anymore?

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RU-vid, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I’m sure I do not fully understand but certainly have the fear instilled in me. This is why I save as much as I can. I saw my dad die young and leave my mother with very little. My sisters and I were determined to be financially independent and have saved for a rainy day since I was 18.

What really hurts is the people you helped out when they needed it(family and close friends) aren't there for you. I know because I'm in that situation now. They tell me you should have planned for your future. These are my children. While they buy new cars and take vacations, I'm worried about having a roof over my head. I too live on a fixed income. Finding a place I can afford has been a nightmare. But I still love them and want the best for them.

My greatest fear in life as a 58 year old woman is to be homeless. I am on disability too and have no family or support group. You see this in the Third World all the time. For about 40 years now, the conditioning process started, where people would eventually accept such things as normal,even if irritating. We have become more like the Third World, not the other way around. The oligarchy simply doesn't believe in investing in society or housing, though a long time ago at least government did. Her comment, "I wish I would have handled my finances better when I was younger", is understandable. But there are so many other factors that can hit a "responsible adult" and bring them to their knees. Heath issues, economy, aiding another family member in crisis, natural disaster..... Cheri is disabled and can't help that and didn't plan to live her senior life that way. Toughs of us who are healthy, can't imagine until we are on the same boat. Living in the US can be dog-eat-dog, despite the few Christian and non Christian charities who try to help. State and federal gov don't seem to have or the will to create effective resources to resolve his growing threat to our nations homelessness and it's just horrible to see it happening to our elderly. The headlines revolve on who "takes a knee" or something as as trivial, but how we treat our elderly is the real story and should effect us all.

When I was young and just out of high school, every time I tried to save a decent amount of money something would take it away from me; a doctor bill, dental work, car repair, etc. It's hard to save when your income is low. Fortunately, my parents let me move back in and go to college. It was impossible without them because there were no buses available to get to night school and I couldn't afford a reliable car. My aunt is in her 50s too and it was pretty hard for her to find a new job (she had to go through supplemental training as well as to downgrade her level of expectations). This was a very wise piece of advice from the lady in the video: "I wish I would have planned my finances better when I was young." Good luck to her! 🌼

Gregg Powers - HE IS NOT necessarily "sunk" just because he's Disabled. If by chance he earned a substantial salary before he became Disabled, he will draw more SSDI than the Average Joe (2018 average Disability pay = $1197). I hope he lives in a state with a low cost of living . Although most people don't qualify for anywhere near the max, a person with a higher paying, long-term career ($150k+/year) could receive almost $2800/month in SSDI for 2018,. If there's a wife, and child under 18, add on 50% of your current SSDI check (they will be separate direct deposits or checks) to your monthly benefits. Disabled Veterans who are 100% Disabled receive around $3000/month +/-. IF Mr Allison were to miraculously qualify for the max amounts the VA and SSDI awarded, he'd be raking in a comfortable $5800-$7200/month (tax free). Much better than the minimum $720/month awarded to those who qualify (people who have never worked (i.e. SAH mom whose bully husband wouldn't let her have a job)), or the person hasn't been employed a sufficient amount of hours the last 10 years. I know I'm giving extreme examples, but I wanted people to know there can be a vast difference in how good or bad a Disabled person is faring financially. Looking at the other extreme, I bet most older homeless Disabled Vets (especially the elderly war vets) don't know they can file a claim to get their disabilities re-evaluated and possibly raise their disability pay and increase benefits. Some might not have a clue they can collect both VA Disability AND SSDI at the same time. I would guess as many as 10% (or more) homeless Disabled Veterans don't have to be homeless at all IF they received the benefits they are entitled to! Stop here if you don't care to hear where my information came from... But Thank for reading this far!! How do I know this much about disability? I'm a Disabled Vet and I developed a chronic illness almost 5 years ago. Ever the workaholic, I fought giving up on my dream career in Corporate America (kept trying to go to work), but eventually the illness won. I was still convinced my situation was temporary so I refused to file for SSDI, until a year later, when my savings ran out. It took roughly 3 years, 2 denials and 2 SSA hearings before I got approved for SSDI. I'm a Financial Analyst (BS in Accounting/Finance) so I researched for months regarding my possible benefits, and I learned as much as I could. I need a failproof process for easing back into the workplace if/when I am able to. I'm not giving up! I hate relying on the government and taxpayers (SSDI) even though I paid into SSA for 35 years. I'm trying NOT to be homeless! But I can see how someone like me could be, and it scares the hell outta me!

The fact is, cost is outpacing life. It costs people tens of thousands of dollars to live at least somewhat comfortably. The only reason why we don't have more homeless elderly, is because people don't live that long. We've been fed this life expectancy lie, that we're all supposed to live to 80 years old or more, but the truth is, 50% of people die before 50, and the other 40% die within the next 10 years after that. Only 12% of people actually make it to retirement age, and 90% of them die within 5 years of that. Imagine if even just 50% of people make it to retirement age, we would have tens of millions of homeless elderly people. The fact is, with the demand of today's work, a person is not going to be able to last 70 years of that, not most people. Most people have a serious ailment by 30-40 years old, and just struggled the rest of their lives. We need society to realize that we simply can't go on like we are, it will cause the collapse of society. Then all those rich people who got rich off the backs of other peoples labor, won't have anywhere to spend their money. It will be worthless, it won't buy them anything, and they might have their fancy homes, but everything they own has a shelf life, falls apart....and eventually will be in ruins if someone skilled isn't there to fix it.
@alcam14
@alcam14 7 лет назад
C North, "50% of people die before 50, and the other 40% die within the next 10 years after that" Where are you getting these shocking statistics?
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 7 лет назад
Just look at the population ratio. Only 14% of people are aged 65 or older. That means 86% of people are under that age. Do you think that only 14% of people, made the 86% of people alive today? Even if they had two kids, and those kids had two kids (i.e. grand children), that would only be a 3 fold increase, that would only account for less than 60% of all people. So clearly these other people are coming from somewhere. And keep in mind, some people will have more kids, some will have less, but the statistical average is 1.87 kids per family in the USA. Life expectancy is how long you could live, not how long you will likely live. While populations grow, and you have countries like Japan with aging populations, it's because a lack of births, rather than a long life expectancy. I know it's shocking, because we are lied to, reality is twisted to make up believe certain things. Mostly it's perpetuated by the government and businesses to not have to pay out retirement benefits and pensions. Think of all those people who paid into accounts and social security that died before they could collect. Countries like Greece has a retirement age of 50. But it ended up too costly, because too many people were able to collect. The whole point of the retirement age is based on a secret fixed number of how many people they expect to survive to that age.....and let me tell you, it ain't many. Of course they can't make the age requirement soo old that no one could collect, but they make it high enough to be unobtainable by the vast majority of the population, even though everyone is required to pay into it. This is the reality.
@alcam14
@alcam14 7 лет назад
+C North, your words are scary. I live in a low income area in Canada and I'm seeing lots of people dying in their 50's. What you're saying rings true from what I see around me. I always thought the majority lived to 70+. The truth isn't always easy to see.

Spend less than net income. Save money. Build emergency savings. Don't give money to those who will waste it and not pay it back. Invest a portion of savings, after the emergency fund, in small, mid, and large cap stock funds to create spending money from gains for your retirement income. Don't trust pensions and SS to be there for income.

While it may not be ideal, there is low cost senior housing in some less expensive parts of the country like the Midwest. While the SS is far from perfect having nearly $800 a month guaranteed is better than 0. Never day it can't get worse, what if the government says were broke and are going to cut the $800 to $400 or $200 and you have no recourse. It has happened in Greece and the US is heading towards bankruptcy. As a millennial I never include SS as part of my retirement as I have no faith in the government since it is nearly bankrupt. Printing fake money just causing inflation by the way.

England is much worse than the US when it comes to how they treat their disabled citizens. I spent two years in England (Bristol) and there were reports in the media every day regarding disabled people being examined and deemed fit for work when some of them were blind and incapacitated. There are many suicides among the homeless in England. The UK government even recruited a company to reduce the numbers of people claiming to be disabled and paid them on a commission basis. I thought things were bad in America until I saw the deplorable way the English treat their disabled and homeless. Unfortunately I now think the US is catching up with England.
