that last segment was a major gut punch. Denial of past mistakes and bad deeds is a cowardly and dishonorable path, destined to lead to more mistakes and bad deeds.
It's still unfortunately very much a thing in Japan. Their dark past from that time (especially WW2) isn't taught in schools and is left out in history books. It's really sad cuz they were actually a lot worse than the Nazis with how they treated people and they pretend it didn't happen. A lot of western society probably doesn't know about it either.
I'm half korean and my husband is japanese. He was so embarrassed by this. My grandma has deep trauma that my husband couldnt speak any japanese at all around her. My grandma witnessed her mother got r-ped and her father got murdered by japanese army. She was also rped. Japan's denial and act of being the victim is so cowardly.
so weird fact in Canada we are taught from a young age about the terrible things that our government did in the past due to it being an integral part of our social steadies. being taught all the good and the bad of our history and culture. we're still trying to make things right though it doesn't always work and sometimes does more harm than good. so seeing the reaction of those people denying what happened to those women is baffling and kind of terrifying. how far must their delusions must go to think that was ok.
I think here in the US it used to depend on the region, I grew up in Oklahoma so we learned a lot about how screwed the natives got & my teacher (a former DA) did go into the shittier things the US did but it gets glossed over a lot. My dad taught me about Japanese internment camps and a lot of other stuff the US just doesn't teach about. So I get how people could plug their ears and pretend it didn't happen if they didn't have it come up and have it washed over by their country's achievements.
Sure, but did it cover everything? I live in the UK and it seems like white people just teaching about slavery and native Americans to absolve themselves, then proceed to think they are some benevolent enlightened messiahs of the world. They remain ignorant about all the other stuff they did and fill in the gaps of their knowledge with assumptions based on the idea that Western civilisation became benevolent and righteous. They don't know about the coolie trade, Columbus, what went on in Africa, India, the opium wars in China, and so much more. People are also hugely ignorant of what the US did in South America and the Middle East in recent history. White people thinking that their government and US government have the moral obligation to "police the world" is proof that there is a lot of whitewashing and brainwashing going on.
The last story , imagine being so sensitive to criticism to your country that you delude yourself with jingoistic rhetoric - these comfort women are still alive it’s like Holocaust denial
He's kinda been mascotized . I mean there's different people who act as him in commercials and such. He represents the company . There's even a dating sim of him, which I think you can find on steam, and a short drama, played by Mario Lopez. Sure, he was the founder, but now calling him a mascot, would technically not be wrong. It does kinda feel wrong though, I'll give you that. There's no doubt that he has a legacy though!
Interesting that people would deny comfort women existed when last year Japan paid 1 billion yen to the surviving comfort women in South Korea. 34 of the surviving women went on to receive about ¥10 million each. It seems awfully strange that Japan would pay restitution to these women if in fact it had never happened…
Lol right? Partly it is true that a handful of comfort women did go willingly, but they went for work and didn't realize that they would become sex slaves and were not paid/could not go home. The rest were kidnapped if I'm correct. I don't even think they were allowed to keep pregnancies for the most part. I was told by my Korean relatives that Japanese/Korean babies from comfort women were either aborted pre-birth or killed after birth.
As much as I wish I could believe "comfort women" didn't happen-- It was war. I 100% believe ALL sides had something like this happen. Ours, theirs, *everyone* because every country has evil people in it. War makes many stop seeing anyone but their side as "real" people and that's when things like this can happen. Sex trafficking still exists, no country is immune. And that's a truth that breaks my heart.
"all sides"? when americans had their morale down, the army decided to give them ice cream machines so theu can be happy about something, and it worked, japan decides to get women and children to play obedient waifu, and even when rps happened, not even the russians or nazi were as degenerated as the Japanese
I've seen too much Demon Slayer Merch than any other Anime in Japan. At this point, there's soo many that you could fill a landfill with Demon Slayer Merch
Bloody awful about the sharks, do people not realise that they’re apex predators, and are so necessary to the ocean, they help maintain a healthy ecosystem particularly around reefs. But hey WTF Japan also still hunt’s endangered whales, so really this doesn’t surprise me 🤢🤢🤮🤮
Actually it is not endangered whales that are the most prominently hunted in Japan, it's mostly the Bryde whale which is one of the most common type of Whale on the planet. Same for the sharks (not saying Japan never did anything wrong, they HAVE hunted endangered species in the past and certain companies still do to this day but it's just not the case today as much as it was before). I totally agree with the fact that it can be a problem in certain areas concerning eco diversity, but what I mean is that for the most pat, the hunt is regulated and not as much as an impact as one might think. It is shocking for us who clearly do not put aquatic mammals in the same bag as fishes but yeah it's more or less the same thing
@@lyndylou752 It's not slaughter if it's regulated, we are literally in the same situation as us eating beef and indians cursing us for it, cultural differences exist. As long as it doesn't harm the environment, there is no waste and it's not done purely for "fun" I don't see a problem with it. Plus nobody talked about dolphins
@@lyndylou752 so by those standards are you trying to justify why we slaughter chicken, cows, goats, pigs and fish, we don't need any of that, there are plenty of alternatives that would work just as well.
Unfortunately, they still want to be the biggest victim. My husband is japanese, he learned about what happened after he met me. Everytime he sees my korean grandmother and how traumatized she was when she heard him speaking japanese, he felt deeply ashamed and quite angry at his own country and govt.
TBH, the 'Curse of Colonel Sanders' really is par for the course as far as baseball goes, in both the US AND Japan. Possibly one of the most superstitious major league sports out there.
There’s actually a statue of Ronald McDonald fused with a Boll Weevil outside the McDonald’s in Enterprise, AL. The whole town is filled with Boll Weevil statues and McDonald’s one made for their restaurant. It’s called Ronald McWeevil.
Is it sad because the shark is endangered or sth? The sad thing is shark fin harvesting where only the fin is cut off and the shark is left wounded to die in the ocean. If the shark is caught and killed whole then they don’t suffer prolonged time like such, and I don’t see what’s sad about it compared to other fishes like tuna.
Would love to see the cursed rat dumplings brought up and talked about. I really want to know more about how that’s effecting cultural experiences in Japan rn. Especially with it seeming to become a “cursed” meal to give to someone you don’t like or along the lines of. For those who don’t know too: I don’t mean they’re using rat meat. I mean they’re dumplings in the shape of rats then boiled and served. It’s super cursed seeing people eat them and the tail hanging out of their mouths.
The last image depicts what Japan government is. Majority of new gens in Japan trying to learn from the past and wants the elders of Japan to give a proper apologies to the world , especially Korea but it seems the government still trying to deny their forbidden mistakes
There is a similar curse in one of the counties in Ireland where a football team hasn't won a match since the 1950s and the only why for them to win is for the team that won in the 50s to die
I am against hunting sharks or shark fin soup etc. they are essential to the oceans ecosystem. Regarding the WW2 atrocities it should be known what Japan & the axis powers did just as much as what the Allies did. History should be told no matter what so we can hopefully learn, atone & never repeat.
I'm glad Aki also thinks that how sharks are hunted and treated both for sale in general fishing and for the shark fin trade is inhumane, it really is. They aren't the evil creatures media likes to portray them as, they're actually very essential to our oceans.
I imagine it's super labor intensive but I could see it coming back as a yearly October segment. 🤔 I've been enjoying the Sakura Stardust channel for similar content in the interim.
I think the most cursed part for me was. "Lets get right to it" *snap* Straight into an ad for Amazon. That kfc story was the most interesting and hilarious thing I've heard in ages! It got better and better the more it progressed!
To be fair, a lot of the issues with the Junji Ito anime came from the art style. The mobility of the stories was great, they just didn’t lean into the expansive(and sometimes exaggerated) high detail and shading of the manga which was part of what *made* it creepy
I heard that eating KFC during Christmas in Japan was sort of a marketing scam. Like somebody opened a KFC branch in Japan and it was going to tank, so he perpetuated the idea that Christmas was associated with eating a large bird like turkey or chicken, but instead of a big roast turkey, he pushed the idea that we eat fried chicken too, and yeah. marketing.
I think the “Ash Roasting the Electabuzz Baseball Team” Moment from the Episode “The Double-Trouble Header” originated from the Henshin Tigers’ then 14-Year Curse, if I recall right.
That last one had me flinch. I know i have read the story of that girl statue and if I remember correctly there's also a statue in Korea. It's heartbreaking how some Japanese still deny those things from ever happening, i mean it's not only Koreans who experience those things Filipinos also suffered the same thing on their hands . It's in the past tho what's done is done and new generations don't need to atone for anything and shouldn't be affected that much. Tho we still need to respect what happened and pass down all the rightful information to the next gen coz what ever happened it's all a part of our history.
As far as I know, the KFC on Christmas was basically just a marketing thing where they told the Japanese populace that Americans also eat KFC on Christmas.
5:30 Rena from Higurashi finds the Colonel Sanders statue in a dump, rescuing what she calls 'Kenta-kun' (short for Kentakki-, Kentucky fried chicken). In a way, lifting the 'curse' by recovering Kenta-kun. Interesting because in Higurashi there is a major theme of atonement (Tsumihoroboshi). Thanks for covering this urban legend.
The far right and the far left always tends to do that. When they don't like something or when something hurts their feelings they scream about it... bringing attention to it. 😂
I'm terrified of clowns and Ronald MbDonald was always one of the creepiest clowns to me, second only tp Pennywise. That said, I absolutely love insects and spiders. Seeing Ronald McDonald fused with spiders and cockriaches was scary as hell. If cockroaches and spiders really looked like that, I'd run away screaming everytime I saw one, lol. Also, those poor sharks! I'm an animal lover and seeing images like those are just so heart-breaking and sad 😢
I'm probably going to be the only person here who likes Ronald McDonald. I had more of a clown phobia towards the clown with the tearaway face in Nightmare Before Christmas. However, I've always placed both clowns in two separate categories: Ronald is in the good clown category and It and the Clown with the Tearaway Face the Sewer Clowns (or Evil Clowns who hurt people). (*Note: except for, Clown Tearaway Face. Hes nice and don't hurt anyone, but he's scary lol and cute to me now.)
a wise man once said "when you cut a man's tongue, it shows you fear what he has to say, not that he is lying", or something like that it also reminds me of a short where a Japanese man said gringos like to portray themselves im good light as heroes in ww2 films, while japan tries to portray itself in good light as well, and there is a good reason for that: because yankees ended the war, they saved millions of lives, and prosecuted the war criminals of berlin, sadly they couldn't do the same with the Japanese who haven't any reason to paint themselves in any good way for their actions, this is erasing history at its finest. they were proud to do those things when they were winning, but ashamed when they lost and wouldn't own their actions anymore
no, you know I’m curious if after Midori like because that anime got banned because of how extreme it was not just like you know the violence and war like you stated in your video but just the fact that it is disturbing if maybe like that’s why in Japan they just decided like hey you know we need to tone it back like a hell of a lot and let’s not try and tempt bake twice with you know like making something that’s gonna be at the same disturbing level of Midori
Back when I was 19 (so this was over 30 years ago), I was working at a chain grocery store in the US. It was my break time and I had the misfortune of having to spend my 15 minutes in the break room with the biggest asshole that ever held the title of store manager. He and I did NOT get along… So I decided to just keep to myself, eat my snack, smoke my cigarettes and go back to work. Unfortunately he had other plans… He was on a lunch break and had gotten something from the seafood department. He asked if I’d even eaten shark before (apparently we sold it and sold it cooked). I told him no, I didn’t actually care for seafood (which I didn’t and still don’t much today) and I thought the idea of eating sharks was wrong. But he was very insistent that I try it because it was a delicacy. As we had a hate/hate relationship and he was actually being nice for once, I decided to try a small piece. It was tough, rubbery and difficult to chew. It also had a very strong fishy taste. He was smiling, happy I tried it and excitedly asked if I liked it. I lied and said it was good. It made him happy… That made my life a little easier, but I can tell you, you aren’t missing anything. The consistency is nasty and the taste is rather foul. It’s definitely an acquired taste, one that acquired by power hungry men who think eating a powerful animal will make them powerful. There’s no point in it.
And people thought they hated Ronald McDonald before. I love the guy personally. But not like THIS. Especially when I already fear spiders, roaches and most other bugs
I’m sorry, the mental image of a crowd looking around, realizing they don’t have a white guy and someone shouting “let’s get the KFC statue!” is cracking me up. Legends.
But how will you learn the mistakes from the past if you refuse to accept brutally harsh, real reality check while letting your toxic big egos getting ahead of you? To be fair, Japan was destroying themselves, not guilt-tripping, gaslighting neither projecting. How can you be prepared later in the future if you continued being an ignorant fool for refusing to learn the mistakes from the past if history keeps repeating itself?
You should definitely check out some of Umezu-san’s manga. I’ve been a huge fan of his since discovering The Drifting Classroom and his short form manga stories in my teens. They go off the rails insane fun ideas with interesting messages woven into them.
Sharks are just overpopulated in Japan so the government requests fishermen to kill a certain amount per year so the population doesn't get to a point where it 1) effects the population of all the other species in the water and 2) becomes a hazard for people. It seems cruel on the surface but if they let them be then Japan would basically just be 99% sharks and they would die anyway due to a lack of food. I'm 100% against animal cruelty but most fishermen are just doing their job (and what the government asks of them) and try to kill them as respectfully as possible. Some species of sharks can breed up to 100 pups so overpopulation is more of a problem than people think.
It's shitty how much Japan goverment denies comfort women existence when there were survives who told their story about it. Sadly, the last one died due to old age(i think) few years ago without getting the acknowledgement of their suffering.
I clicked on this because it reminded me of that old commercial (not sure if it’s real or not) but it’s itsudemosukoni macudonarudo. Please keep in mind I don’t speak Japanese and just sounded out how I hear it in my mind. Ignore the spelling
I think it's kinda sad they retired Ronald McDonald honestly, and I never really saw him as scary as a kid, and I never liked horror depictions of him, as he is one of the few remaining unironic clowns. Nice clowns are a rarity now in media. McDonald's honestly feels more sterile and corporate when they got rid of him and the gang.
