It's so refreshing to hear genuine negatives about Japan without the 'Oh well, that's just the way it is here ♡' disclaimer. So many people forget that having a negative opinion about a few things doesn't mean you think the whole country and culture is trash 🙄 Good on you for telling it like it is, especially when it comes to a country like Japan that does indeed have wonderful aspects but it is also incredibly romanticised online

I knew about the tattoo thing before I went to Japan, so I knew I couldn't go into certain places... but I still got caught out by it. I wore a singlet shirt to my hotel's gym for a workout (as you do) and got asked to change into a shirt that covers it. I don't begrudge it (i.e. not my place to tell other cultures how to live, so in their country I play by their rules), but you can't help but find it a little frustrating considering I'm Pacific Islander and it's legitimately cultural for us to have tattoos (i.e. the word literally comes from our languages).

I like the cash gift thing. Having been married in the USA and getting a crap ton of useless stuff that mostly did not have a way to return them, Also having to display the stuff that may be missed by a family member or in-law. Ick.
@samwalters1
@samwalters1 3 года назад
Yeah I mean wedding registrys have helped with that problem somewhat making sure the gifts you get are at least things you want/will use - However, for most newly weds the straight up cash is likely way more beneficial to them.......

I find gving cash to the newlyweds more practical than giving gifts, they can buy things that they really needed and they can save up the remaining for future use.

@ttiger86 3 года назад
When we got married the cash we got was really useful to us. It helped on our honeymoon for spending money. 300 dollars is a lot, though. I was happy if someone could only give us a 20. At least they were trying to bless us.
@lordi2009k
@lordi2009k 3 года назад
wait serriosly you have to desplay all the wedding gifts over in the states what if someone was to get you a gift with the idea that it will keep the behind closed doors life going for a bit longer. i put this in them words just incase of any youngsters see this it aint so strait forward
@ttiger86
@ttiger86 3 года назад
@@lordi2009k I think when they talk about display they mean in your home? Bc you don’t have to display them. At the wedding everything is wrapped or I’m bags on the table so no one knows what someone got you. There’s no time to open the gifts at the wedding either. But if your in laws or mom comes over to your house after the wedding and finds out you’re not using that blender or toaster they so lovingly bought you, you know you’re going to hear about it.

One of the things stopping me from moving to japan (I don't want to move there because of anime, I genuinely love the country, the food, the culture) is the whole tattoo yakuza thing. I've grown up around tattoos, my godfather is a tattoo artist and I had an apprenticeship with him in Scotland. I have two tattoos of my own (a small explosion behind my ear and a snake by my right ring finger). I'm planning on getting more, like the silhouette of a dragon on my back and the 00:00:00 from Unus Annus. Unless this rule (is that the right word, idk) is abolished in bathhouses etc or at the very least, us foreigners are exempt, I don't think I can move there.

Especially if they are running a business. If you have an apartment building, the floors will be numbered like these: 1, 2, 3, 3A, 5 and so on. For their car plate number, they'd rather pay thousands to have customized number than having the number 4 in it. While number 8 is considered to bring in wealth. I respect their custom and enjoy their new year festivals a lot. Just find it a bit weird about the numbers.

In Singapore for Chinese weddings it's also expected that guests bring envelopes of cash and it's rude if you don't. In some iterations, the cash is a symbol of wishing the couple happiness (also because once they're married they gonna be giving out cash themselves during chinese new year). It's a symbol for happiness and well wishes, not simply cash. Here the guide for the amount of cash is usually how much your dinner costs (e.g. that hotel charges 1,500 a table, with 10 pax per table so your gift should be at least $150). Additionally, cash is arguably better than a chosen gift. The couple could be very particular about kitchen appliances and then they get 3 blenders from people (and arguably also not carefully chosen) and none of those blenders are the one the couple had intended to get. Anyway as far as SG is concerned, the total cash gift amount from all the guests just about almost covers the wedding dinner itself (not even additional things like decor, clothes, photography, etc.). Cold hard cash is the best gift.

I'm Josiah nah a lot of things about normal japan that you can’t learn about in anime are boring and this is someone who lived there for years. outside of the good parts like some of the respect culture, serving tea to guests, connection to nature and healthy traditional diets, average japanese people don’t think for themselves and are highly susceptible to propaganda and groupthink. japanese TV is either very boring, very over the top and exaggerated to the point of being corny, or just a reflection of dated expectations and cultural biases. anime and manga and otaku shit tend to be one of the few areas of japanese culture that throw all the BS to the side and just gets creative and playful. i don’t blame anyone who focuses most of their attention on that part of the culture as long as they don’t hurt anyone.

You take off your shoes when you enter your house because your shoes are dirty and doing that will mean your house won't get dirty as fast. It's a practical thing, and honestly I feel gross walking around a house with my shoes on, especially if I've been told that the floor has been washed recently.
