@@pandainpearls Most likely that, yes. But if she heard anything that was on the menu, that would've been a good indicator what she said yes to, lol. Who knows. I just found that funny. She could've ordered something specifically if she wanted to.
@@danielleking262 If I were her my anxiety levels would have been to high to even notice the English let alone listen and compare. I too would have just been saying yes repeatedly until the cookies came out. 😅😹
Italian and Spsnish isn't terribly different it comes from the same family of languages like French, Latin, Romanian, Portuguese. You did greet those galletas look wonderful!! I just started watching your shorts on here ans I've watched them all thus far. Your energy and enthusiasm makes me that much happier to visit Italy someday with my family.
Here’s the thing about nun’s pastries in Spain, from a Spanish girl: They’re always good. They are usually handmade or with a traditional recipe and it’s their main income so no matter what you bought, everything will be delicious!
@@youdontneedtoknowwhoiam6640 si means if? i hope the context is always enough then lol cuz when i happen to speak spanish i usually just say si without the accent
@@geminievil with context they'll most likely understand, but I just remember my Spanish teacher making sure we understood that si and sí are different and thought I should share that knowledge. But you're probably okay.
My priest came from a town where they did this in mexico, he used to help the milkman and get cookies from the nuns. The reason that they do this is because there cloistered, which means that they usually can't come out of their nunery. cool too see this!!
Yup cloistered nuns aren’t super common anymore but it’s really cool! They can’t have any face to face interaction with the world so this is how they earn a living
@@kleinwolkje203 😃😄😃😄 Hahaha, that's probably exactly what happened. I'd be totally fine with almond and lemon, but I'm way too much of a coward to say "yes" when I don't understand something. I'm afraid of accidentally buying a washing machine or selling my kidney... 😅
In one spanish city (I don't recall which) there's a cheese that the nuns make called La Tetas de la Novicia (Novice's tatas) for the shape, which is so scandalous, but also very funny.
I mean, it's handmade and it's pretty much a private business. Moreover the nuns probably need some money for all that packaging, ingredients, and for maintaining the church or their quarters. Either way I'd love to buy from them someday I'd go to Madrid just to support them ☺️
@@Noone20022 it's not really that expensive, specially if you compare it to the rest of Europe 😊 but it is true salaries are way lower than in countries like France, Germany, Italy or UK 🙈
@@Noone20022 No not at all. You live a very comfortable life especially if you have an American salary. I work for an American company with an office in Madrid. I was blessed to get the position and move overseas. The way of life is much more mellow. When you leave work, you leave. There's not a rat race of living to just work and stress like it is in the US. Not criticism of the US. I love my country! They just know how to enjoy life here at a very different level.
Omg as soon as you said knock on a door I thought you were going to the almond nuns! If you're still in the Madrid area and you like almonds you should definitely head to Alcalá de Henares for a day! It's about a 20-30 minute train ride from Madrid and it's the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes who wrote Don Quixote. It also has the Clarissas de San Diego, or as I like to call them, the almond nuns! It's a similar situation where you go in and ring a little doorbell and buy little packs of candied almonds from them. They have a bunch of different packs and the prices are listed on the display so you just tell them the price of the one you want and then put the money on the little turn table and they spin it back around with your almonds and your change! Edit: I forgot to mention that I studied abroad in Alcalá for the summer so if you end up going and reply to this comment I can tell you all the best places to hit up!! 😁
The first one look a dang lot like what we call "Makronen" in German, which are like meringue with desiccated coconut mixed in with the whipped egg white and sugar before baking them :3 They're perfect for using up the egg whites from other recipes that only got the yolks in them and are therefore like a staple in our private Christmas cookie bakery :3
Yes we call them macaroons I believe. There are 2 kinds though. The coconut and egg white fluffy kind. And the expensive "hamburger" kind. They have 2 sides and a filling. I honestly prefer the coconut macaroons with a drizzle of dark chocolate.
Che bontà! 🤩 Dulces de convento* are to die for. 😋 I miss this so much about Spain. It brings back happy childhood memories. 💕 *traditional Spanish pastries, handmade by cloistered nuns
"you knock on a secret door, and it opens, and nuns sell you cookies". Me: "ok im sorry what? This is the second time youve had food/drink just appear at a door.
I struggled so hard to open that dang door last week when my husband and I were there. Of course there was a whole tour stopped in front of the door to see my failure 😹 but we secured some cookies and they were so good!!
I love that you went to purchase cookies from the cloistered nuns. I have seen this place several times on different shows, but seeing you do it made it more realistic to me. Gracias!😊
Everyone has a Corpus Christi because dem Catholics conquered the whole region! Where the main language is Spanish, you'll also find places named "el Corpus". ☮️
I just wanted to tell you; you are so adorable!! I absolutely love your videos especially after having a spouse that is Sicilian and being introduced to their culture. I show my spouse your videos sometimes and it makes him laugh so much which warms my heart, I love seeing cultures fuse with each other and seeing harmony. You’re also very beautiful! Have fun in Madrid 🇪🇸
I can only imagine how fun and amazing it would be to move to Italy or another country and learn about the food and unique things that only exist there. Best wishes to your new life ❤
Omg, they made the wheel to sell cookies, in the medieval ages the ever monastery had a wheel, where if people couldn't raise their children, they would put them there ring the bell and leave, so them didn't see the peoples faces, i know some monastery now use the wheel as a selling point cuz they live off society, BUT COOKIES?
I just saw someone share their thrift haul from Florence and it was amazing. I’d be interested to see what good spots you could find for thrifting if you’re ever up to it. I think Italy and I think high fashion. I think it would be amazing to see what kind of second hand and thrifted things you could find if your visiting on a budget.
OMG, I remember watching a travel show years ago, and they were in Madrid and THAT DOOR was one of the places that they went to. I've heard that their cookies and pastries are FREAKING AMAZING!!!
I also don't know much Spanish. Start off by saying "mi Espanol es Malo" I only know a little bit as a cashier once I had a customer tell me "mi Ingles es Malo" (my English is bad) so we were able to figure it out with spanglish together.
I hope she wasn’t asking you if you’d called ahead for that order 😆 but, nah I think it was fine - I heard her say almond cookies and something else that sounded like she was just asking if you wanted pastas de almendra (so maybe the dough was made with almond paste in the almond cookies(??) putting my highschool Spanish to the test. This was really charming! If I were to go there I would definitely give them extra money for my order as a donation ❤
if you keep going to secret doors or windows and you keep saying yes without knowing spanish you might find SOME EXPENCIVE "NOSE CANDY" GIRL!!! MAYBE EVEN SOME "ELECTRIC LETTUCE" HAHAHAHA XD
omg haha those are cloistered nuns. they make sweets, polvorones and dulces de navidad for a living. that was just a tipical spanish (that i know) thing.
It's not a "secret door"; they are cloistered nuns. They simple do not leave and this is how they give and get things from the outside world. They will get groceries delivered to them through that door too. Catholic knowlege.
