It's because of the GameBoy that I immensely appreciate the Nintendo Switch. That said, I miss my DS, too

Once when I was growing up in the 90's, I only played GameBoy Color for 4 years.

For my first 18 years, I only had a Gameboy for my only mobile option.

Replacing a gameboy save battery is super cheap and super easy, most game stores should be able to do it for you

You could have replaced the batteries in your games on your own, it's very simple and good to stay true to your goal.

I like how you prepared for this challenge by recording lots and lots of game footage, but didn't check if you actually had a Game Boy. Classic "content creator".

Although i have every modern system, including 3 gaming pc's and an alienware alpha, all i care about is my nostalgic gameboy color and gameboy advance sp.

I've been playing on my gameboy color since I was four and I turn 23 this year, this challenge is weak.

I love how this is considered a challenge to someone. There was a point when I was a kid, where I'd play Game Boy constantly. Nothing but Game Boy. I had other consoles, NES, Genesis, SNES, whatever else at the time. But there was nothing more fun at the time than loading up Pokemon Red and playing side by side with my friend who was playing Blue. Or even when we weren't battling and trading, and I was just playing by myself, I'd load up Mario Land, Donkey Kong Land, Tetris, Pokemon Pinball, Pokemon TCG, Dr. Mario, Operation C, and so many others. I had an entire bag of link cables, like 4 worm lights, a screen magnifier, rechargeable battery packs, a special grip attachment, a carrying case, hundreds of those small plastic individual game holders. Nowadays, I don't have all of that. I DO still have my Pokemon Gold themed Game Boy Color, as well as a GBA I re-shelled. I also have a little over a handful of my original games (a lot of my stuff got stolen, so I have what's left). I still pull out my GBA from time to time to play some Mario Land. HOWEVER....I also have emulation and Flash Carts. Specifically I have Retroarch on my Xbox Series S, and an EZ Flash Omega for my GBA. I love my original consoles and games, but the fact that I can play games I've never owned or only recently learned existed, on my TV, and I can make it look nearly identical to playing on a Super Game Boy or Game Boy Player.... And my god, it's amazing. I know some people shun emulation like it's a sin to even utter the word, but come on. I have literally every single official Game Boy and Game Boy Color game on my Xbox, along with a bunch of unreleased games, and even betas. Hell, I have the old Spaceworld '97 betas for Pokemon Gold and Silver. Like, it's great. And the fact that they look and feel like I'm playing them via an actual Super Game Boy, using the real official borders and color palettes, just makes it for me. (Mind you, this is all true of Game Boy Advance too.) Saying all that. I play Game Boy games pretty often. Yes, I play other things. I loaded up Rocket League earlier today. I played Clone Hero (a Guitar Hero PC clone) yesterday for a couple hours. I play Assassin's Creed, Skyrim, and so many other games too. But, I still play Game Boy games all the time. I'm actually playing some right now in fact. I just took a break to comment. I'm playing and watching videos. I dunno. I just kinda find it funny that "I played Game Boy for a month" is a legit challenge someone came up with. It was my life for a while as a kid, and I still play about that much nowadays.

I *LOVE* emulators -- playing modded Pokemon on my 4k TV, with Xbox360 controller, using Save States and speed through dialogue at 5000% holding the trigger button, and link cable trading with myself. That's the way it's meant to be enjoyed

I had a similar situation with Links Awakening as a kid (minus the skittle). Being introduced to gaming on mostly Mario, reading was never a part of the experience for me at a young age. I decided to pick it up again and take it seriously much later on as a teen, and had a really great time playing it, finally realizing how well done of a game it was for its time and hardware.

I was always a fan of the fishing segments in the older Zelda games, like in Link's Awakening and Ocarina of Time :)

The only GBC game i can go back to is pokemon It shows the timelessness of pokemon. Pokemon game series is my favorite game series of all time. A 27 year old guy so hyped for Pokemon Sword and Shield :D

Fascinating video. I enjoyed your experiment. It's kind of funny, I went through a similar situation about a few months back. I got burnt out from playing modern video games and decided to downgrade myself. I started out playing games from maybe a generation before to a couple previous gens, to going all the way back to LED and LCD gaming (like Game & Watch). I went from playing Madden or Smash Bros to playing those little electronic Video Poker and LED Football games. I like the simplicity in them, they are pick up and play kind of games. I started out using them for reasons you explained in your vid, like replacing the void of using a smartphone or killing time, to now setting aside some time to actually play them with no agenda. To be quite honest, I really don't see myself going back to the modern consoles in the same way I approached them before. Besides about 15-30 minutes of gameplay a week from the Switch and even less on the PS4, there are even weeks where I don't even play them at all. I don't know, I try not to speak in absolutes, but maybe I'm just done. Who knows? Anyways, have a good day to anyone reading this. On the flipside, my girlfriend is a Skyrim freak. She bought a computer specifically to play JUST that game and the mods that come with it. Don't ask for specs, because I wouldn't be able to tell you in a hundred years. Haha!

I just found my old gameboy color that I thought I lost years ago. I had it nodded before I lost it to have a back light and did this as well play it for 30 days and I’ll tell you something...it was pretty fun as I remembered I mostly only played Pokémon red and crystal, as well yugioh, and Mario land.

I used to charge people a dollar for shiny starters with my gba gameshark made almost 20 bucks a day XD

By the way, if your cartridge battery is dead you can easily replace it for a new one. Just find the circular watch batteries (maybe watch shops or gadget repair shops), you open the cartridge, pop the old battery off and place the new one. They work just as new! It worked for my Pokemon yellow and gold.

Well, you just answered my question. I was wondering why whenever I tried to save Zelda Links awakening and turn off my Gameboy the save data vanished. I always hated the games with a password save system, and now I'm wishing more of my games had that feature. But man you brought back tons of memories! We were indeed treating Pokemon like a drug we were so addicted. It would give any drug a run for its money, that's what my friends would have believed at least, they were more addicted to Pokemon than me.

You know that you can replace the battery in most old game boy and game boy advance games?! It’s not even that hard to do in most ceases. It’s even easier if the battery is already dead and not just low ( assuming that you want to keep any save data and replace the battery at the same time) but if not it’s pretty easy to do.

Interesting topic. Makes you realize that even though the GameBoy itself is an amazing system, even back then there was a lot of shovelware. That's the reason why I mostly play only a couple out of my own collection on a regular basis. But wow...you really deserve that Links Awakaning DX cartridge dying on you :D Rest in peace game.

It's easy to replace those save batteries, all you need is a cheap soldering iron, a game bit driver, and a new battery, all of which can be had cheaply on ebay.
