Castle Crashers released 11 years ago onto the Xbox Live Arcade from developer The Behemoth. Pulling me away from Halo 3 in 2008, it quickly became one of my favorite games on the Xbox 360. It's now set to arrive on the Nintendo Switch and the PS4. I wanted to look back at Castle Crashers... 11 years later.

Pretty sure this is the ninjas doing a "teleportation" move. The log is a decoy, the ninja then reappears for an aerial strike.

The clown wasn’t really the princess if you look at the painters room you see a painting of the princess with a sword in her back. (also she has purple hair not green hair) This hints at her being dead and being replaced by a clown.

I really like how this game tells the whole story without a single word spoken. Well, other than "help me," which the princesses say every single time they appear on screen. For example, while passing through the Cyclops' home, you can see a picture of him holding a fish with the conehead boss. That implies that they were either close friends, or father and son

I love that the environments are so various. It really feels like a huge adventure around the world. A real odyssey. Also the ninjas turn into wood when they do their jump attack. Thats where they turn invisible and jump down at you.

I recently played the game with a friend who has never played it and a friend who loves the game. We played the 360 backwards compatible version and it ran at 30fps watching the gameplay at 60fps is god damn beautiful

Okay, loved the video, loved Castle Crashers, but just wanna clarify one thing: The Cone-Head groom and the cyclops were NOT getting married. The Cone-Head was marrying the kidnapped princess. First off, she's wearing a wedding dress. Secondly, on the wedding carriage thingy that you get to ride on, you can see the pictures of the Cone-Head and the princess on the front with hearts. The cyclops, however, is sad because they were best friends. You literally just killed his best friend, and he was probably expecting to witness his best friend's marriage today, which you have just ruined. There are even pictures of him and his friend in the castle. Sorry about that, just was a kinda upsetting fact about the video that made me a bit unsettled. The video was great though, good job!

funny thing, my friend and I bought the remastered version on our ps4s recently, we played it on xbox when we were younger and thought we'd revisit it. Back then we'd always play one day, and then go to school and update each other on our progress. Then recently, we were remembering how much fun it was and decided to get it again and play it together. So after we beat it, he obviously grinded a bunch more of the game. Then one day while we were doing our own respective playthroughs he was playing an arena, and while I was casually grinding money I witnessed something in him snap. He was never a fan of the AI in castle crashers, due to them always stun locking him, but he completely broke down and gave up on the game, it was at a bad time as well since a few others from our group had bought it. He still hates the game at the time of this comment but I hope to help him get back into it along with the people who bought it and didn't play it.

If you're having troubles with lining up to your enemies in order to hit them properly, try paying attention to the circle of shadow underneath every character and item, it will help u see if you're on the same line as your enemy's shadow circle

I remember this came around the time when Gears of war was good and everyone loved it, so my friends and i nicknamed the gray Knights "Carmine" and everytime they appeared we'd lose our shit and renact the Carmine death everytime one died... being a child but still having good memories is something that rarely happens but it happens to everyone like me, i played this game when i was like 6-7 years old and it was amazing, to see it upgrade this much is just absolutely amazing. Behemoth is the best.

I love Castle Crashers. I played it on Ps3 for hours, constantly replaying it using different characters. Later on I bought it for PC and had more nostalgia for it. I bought all of the dlc characters and even bought Battle Block Theater just for another character. I always played solo (mainly because I have no friends) and it was fun and very difficult.

GOD I LOVE CASTLE CRASHERS! I played it when i was about 10 years old it was amazing and i played it so many time through just to get all the weapons and all the characters! My favorite was the Red Knight not because he was the coolest but rather because my big brothers all picked the other ones so i was stuck with him and oh god so many nostalgic memories! Thank you so very much for making this video! I really really loved it!

Am I the only slightly upset that you never juggled a single enemy in this vid? I mean everyone knows if you wanted to deal real damage you would try to juggle your enemies But enough ranting from me.The way you Presented Castle crashers as such a unique game like no other was perfect or perhaps it’s better to say you did the ol’ game justice. Although the issues that you brought up were pretty bad and I do remember all these issues taking away from the experience even if only just a bit

Absolutely! It's a huge part of the game, and I'm disappointed I didn't capture any juggling footage. I would have gone back and recorded some clips of it... but I can't play the game this month. (The reason for that will be clear in the next video).

Missed bits of trivia: Fighting for the princess is a callback to double dragon. At the end of the game you fight to decide who gets the girl. The clown princess, as well as the characters the painter boss draws are callbacks to classic newgrounds troll cartoons. The ninjas turning into logs is a trope that ninjas can "substitute" themselves for another object when being attacked, typically a log.

9:21 They don't turn into logs when they're killed. They turn into logs when you hit them in a certain way, but really they've done a ninja-style escape and they show up out of nowhere in mid-air 2 seconds later and whack you right back.

This game holds a special place in my heart. I have so many memories of playing this with my halo friends as well. Unfortunately I lost contact with those guys, but I recently bought this on steam, and introduced it to my new friends who have never played it. This video is amazing, and summarizes why castle crashers is one of the greatest games of all time for me.

This game gives me so many memories. It was a long time ago and I was the youngest of my family and at my cousins house we would pay this game for hours and it just makes me cry seeing that the game had come so far

I remember my first time playing this. My friends and I played and finished the game in a single session. And I did a "glass tank build". So I maxed everything except heath. And when we would fight for a princess it was hilarious because all my friends knew as soon as I touched them they would die. God this game does nothing but bring good memories for everyone

I actually beat it solo on insane. Took a full month, I hit max level way before I beat the game. Ice knight has a golden skull over his icon. :')

Hello, I'm born in 2006 and spent my whole free time watching RU-vid and was enjoying even at least watching this game, i liked it alot and it is still in my heart. I saw your video and i am touched how such a small studio could make a game i have grown up on, i still remember the Forest Black(No racism) Monster, Cyclop and the Wedding boss battles, still remember some characters and still laugh at some of jokes in this game, Right now i forgot about Castle Crashers. Now i will finally play it, maybe even with my friends and watch old videos of people playing it in co-op. You brought me so much good memories about it and im glad i was born that year as i also grown up on Minecraft, Roblox (Which im still playing) and first part of FNAF, i will now bring my precious old good memories about Castle Crashers back and im glad i saw this video.

You're right, Castle Crashers is really bloody hard solo. It's because of something similar to DnD's 'turn economy' where essentially there are too many enemies for one person to fight off alone, and therefore the solo player will be overwhelmed and likely get combo'd to death by some bandits. With more players you can each take on a separate group and therefore not be as overwhelmed.

When the painter boss dies, his ‘boss chest’ has a hat on it, the same hat above his chest head. I just happened to notice that as I was grinding to level 99 on the Xbox 360 a few years ago. Anyways, have a nice day.

This game was actually my childhood. We used to play the demo over and over on my uncle's xbox 360, until one day my younger cousin accidentally purchased the full version. I think it's safe to say that it wasn't a mistake. We had sooo much fun with it as kids.

Piercing Lazer/Real Faction made the first video game song, the Necromancer theme, that I liked so much I felt like I had to track them down and pay for their work just to be able to listen to it outside of a game. It's still one of those songs that instantly bring me back to the fun of playing a game like MOON-Crystals. Thanks for the great video!

For me so much of the fun comes from collecting, there's so many weapons, pets, and playable characters that it makes you want unlock everything, and not to mention the joy of leveling up and getting a new magic ability that ONLY your character has. Ive always loved it

as a 13 year old, me and my dad played on the ps3 when it came out and was the first game i had ever played. since i am 13 and the game is like 12 years old i started VERY young. I am so glad i did because this game is the best!

this was the first game i had ever played. when i was about 4 or 5 years old, it was my favorite game, and, at the time, i didnt know what minecraft was, but when i found what minecraft was, it was just another game, mainly since it was very old minecraft and not that fun to play, but because castle crashers was just better. months passed and i was playing this game like crazy. (no i hadnt beaten the game yet, but uh, i was like 7) but after a long time, i started playing minecraft more, and more, and more and more and more, till i forgot about castle crashers, and minecraft was the new thing. Then. ps4's were introduced. after a few months, we had two ps4s, AND, our original 3, ps3s. but years had passed of us playing ps4, never touching the ps3s, leaving them getting, crusty dusty somewhere in my crawlspace. but then. i saw castle crashers. remastered. and. OH.MY.GOSH. i bought it so fast, like in three minutes, and now its on my ps4, and i play it all the time, and minecraft too. i have beaten the game like, A ton of times, but all im trying to say is, what an amazing, freakin' game you guys made.
