Ryan Holiday and his wife Samantha opened a bookstore with their entire life savings in a 140-year-old building in a small town outside Austin. They envisioned hosting events, welcoming customers from the community, and drawing people to this beautiful street on the bluffs of the Colorado River.
But by the first week of March 2020 the world was entrenched in a pandemic. What began with such excitement found them both, for obvious reasons, standing between the empty brick walls thinking of that Arrested Development line: I’ve made a huge mistake. This video documents their journey to fulfill their lifelong dream of opening a bookstore.

Opening a bookstore in my opinion is never a mistake. Wish there were more. I much prefer going to a physical store and getting lost in the shelves for a few hours.

Every time I saw his videos on this space I had always assumed it was just his office on his house and he just owns that many books. This now makes way more sense

I know you have a small selection of books, but one thing I would take into account is the schools and universities around. What are their reading lists? If you can supply your community with that it could be nice as well. Maybe when they come searching for a book they surely need, they might find one they didn't know they needed. All the best, I hope you have a lot of success through your business.

Hey Ryan, there is a weird parasocial relationship thing happening here and I know you don’t know me, but I feel genuinely proud of you. I have followed your work for a long time and your body of work on the stoics has gotten me through many challenges. Well done for taking the risk!

What a great store. I was able to stop by on 7 July and you were kind enough to sign my books and let me say hello (I had a bike accident where I hit a deer!). Samantha was also super nice to me. Can't wait to come back to the store.

My dad was in business for decades. He was a builder but also financed. When I was working on my MBA, he loved it when I would say, "hey dad, here's a new way you've been doing it wrong all these years!" When I took a financial accounting class, in the first chapter, at least six times, it said how we needed to be using fancy calculators and spreadsheets and that the old mortgage rate books were out of style. We'd been using those books for so long that we could interpolate within a penny or two the amount of payment that fell between numbers in the book. That dead tree mortgage book boots up every time, doesn't need its screen replaced if dropped, and never needs a replacement battery. There is a texture, a smell, even sounds from paper books you don't get from glowing screens that helps with remembering the content.

I've always wanted to do something nice when I save a lot of money, like open a charity or start a non-profit. Never did it occur to me that the best thing I could do is give the most important thing... knowledge. From now on, I will definitely plan on opening a book store!

I'm glad that it's working out for you. I feel like we need more independant book stores

My wife and I have owned an independent bookstore since 1993. The nineties were amazing, but when the Amazon Effect kicked in, we nearly went under a couple of times. But we're still making a living. Your place looks great and so does the street you're on. Our street is doing a big block party thing end of this month, maybe stuff like that with your new neighbors would jumpstart things for all. Looks to me like you have a great start! Best of luck to you.

3 months after having a "crazy idea" and acting on it, and this week I had a lot of self-doubt. This video came in perfect time. All the best to you Ryan.

Always wondered how Ryan had such a stunning place to make videos from, now I know! Deserves massive congrats for his achievement, both him and his wife.

One day I'll come and take a visit to the bookstore. Planning a roadtrip through the USA and Canada and we will need books to read on the way. What better way to support you as to physically come by and buy a mountain 'o books ^^.

“If you build it, they will come.” I can’t wait to make the little trek over from Spicewood. I already have a friend from Florida who wants to come visit so I can take her there. All the best to you and your family.

So happy for you and your family. I am opening a small men’s retail gift store. What an amazing experience. Glad you shared this video. I’m carrying a small selection of books… including Daily Stoic!

An incredible story! Really loved this inside look into how it all came to be. I appreciate the hand written note cards describing some of the books, very nice detail. I hope to visit one day. Congrats Ryan and Samantha!

Love to see this! We made the same leap earlier this year and opened our own bookshop (The Bibliophile) in small town Dover, OH. We also had some inspiration from The Last Bookshop -- such neat book decor! I love your idea of only carrying a limited number of books. I wish you great success!

Ryan, this is such a brave thing to do. You can't imagine how inspiring it is to watch this video. You and Sam's spirit shines through in this video. I live in Canada but I will visit this bookstore on my next U.S. road trip. Hoping you all the success that you two imagined.
