The fact Embiid hasn't gotten even half of the criticism that Giannis, Jokic and Tatum got for not being able to win a championship is wild to me. I think picking Dallas was being a prisoner of the moment. Boston proved all throughout the year they were upper echelon. You can point to the past catastrophes in the postseason, yes. But they added KP, white emerged as a legitimate lockdown/3rd/4th, or when you need It, 2nd option. Jrue gave them everything smart did, PLUS elite shooting. Unless this team faced Denver, It was going to be a cakewalk to the finals. A fully healthy Milwaukee team could’ve gave them a run. But this team is a top offensive and defensive team, there was no way Dallas was getting through them. Luka is unfortunately a slob. He’s burnt up by the end of the year because he has the gas tank of a dirt bike. If he can get conditioned to finish a season strong, they’ve got a shot. But Dallas needs one more bigger guy that can go get a bucket. To me, Boston was the clear cut favorite as soon as the Denver v MIN series was over.

The narrative from the beginning of the season that really, really hasn’t aged well is the “Celtics don’t have depth”. This one still boggles my mind. The starting 5 are obvious. We know those guys are all either All Star or fringe All Star or All NBA guys. But the bench. Horford, Pritchard, and Hauser are starter role players on many other teams (no, not all teams, but some). In no particular order: Kornet really stepped up. Is he the next coming of Shaq? Of course not. But he definitely falls into the category of “can hold his own”. If he’s out on the floor you may not be going forward, but you’re not going backwards either. Tillman had great play during the post season for the minutes he played. Brissett and Queta additionally stayed ready and willing to come in and hold their own as the season went by. Those that don’t see the depth haven’t really watched the C’s play. There’s a reason why all season long the main stars and coach have constantly praised the Stay Ready crew. The Celtics turned that narrative a complete 180. From “they don’t have any depth” to proving they’re one of the deepest teams in the league.

People conflate who they want to win with who they think will win. It was blindingly obvious how good this Celtics team was all year. Notice how once the playoffs rolled around all the detractors would cling to narrative arguments (chokers, Tatum isn't on Joker's level, etc) instead of actually looking with their own eyes.
@mezzb
@mezzb 6 дней назад
yeah - and the choker thing was idiotic. Jaylen and Jayson were 10-5 in playoff series they played together before this year. They lost only two series as favorites (Miami in 2020 and 2023). And won 4 series as underdogs. What am I missing besides slander?
@StuTheDon17

@mezzb Exactly. It's the mob mentality that occurs over the internet. @@mezzbyeah, bro. People that called us chokers shouldn’t even be allowed to watch basketball lol let alone talk it. I had people saying we choked against the Warriors…like, huh??? How??? Cause we lost to a team that has one of the top 10 players of all time?? And even in the 2 series against Miami, one was in the bubble which I darn help but look at differently cause it was some random court in Florida with everyone stuck together in a bubble and no fans cheering in the arena. And then last year, we literally came back from down 3-0, granted we shouldn’t have been down like that, then Tatum rolled his ankle at the very start of the game…and now that I think about it, weren’t we dealing with other injuries as well? With Robert Williams and Smart? Regardless, it’s absolutely insane to call a team with two stars that arguably hadn’t even hit their prime yet, chokers because they lost one series that they should’ve won. It’s funny cause they called us chokers yet we have far and away the best record in elimination games. How many times have we been down 3-2 then went on the road in the biggest moments, won, then closed out the series at home? We did it to the defending champion bucks and to the Sixers(which btw after we beat them in Philly in game 6 Tatum set the record for most points ever in a game 7 lol) and obviously we won 3 elimination games against Miami just last season…so it’s just incredibly disingenuous to say that bs about the Cs.
@mezzb
@mezzb 5 дней назад
@@jordancave3089 The W series is so annoying. I think part of it is that a lot of the media picked us to win in the same spirit that Dallas was picked this year. We had a knock-down, drag-out trip to the finals playing the #1 and #3 teams in 7-game series. They ignored the fact that we were a 51-win team that only got hot when our center started playing like a hall-of-famer in the second half of the season (and was a shell of himself in the playoffs). We were playing a healthy Warriors team that not only had Steph Klay and Draymond, but two talented upstarts, and was playing its best hoops of the season. Meanwhile our third offensive option was Marcus Smart. I'll give the haters that we choked last year against the Heat (though the choking was in the first 3 games). That's fine. We were kind of a mess last season - started off scorching, then were inconsistent the rest of the way. It never felt like our year. I honestly thought they might not make it past the first round.

I think it's just what happens when you don't have the cycles to closely follow every single team. I am usually very nervous about my Celtics. This playoffs I was not. All year they played with a huge margin for error. They won when KP was out. They won when both Jaylen and Jayson were having bad games. They won close games. They won a lot of blowouts. But most importantly, they always bounced back very quickly from bad games. They never lost more than two in a row, and didn't have a single extended rough patch in the entire season. It was all that stuff that told me I had every right to be confident in them winning it all. They just had way too much resilience and way to much margin-for-error. You kind of had to follow them closely to see all that.

People forget that the Celtics had a great record against the Western Conference in the regular season (23-7). That should have been an initial eye opener. Also, they were already a very good team but they went to great with the additions of KP, Jrue Holiday this year and Derrick White a few years back started that upward movement. ha! I do think it's important to avoid two specific narratives. One is "battle tested" - it's not a real thing that has actual data to back it up. The last three finals losers all had tougher paths to the finals. The other one is "which team has the better Best Player" - it's also not supported by data. Almost all of the top players exited the tournament before the conference finals. Best to focus on overall team quality, health, and matchups. And to remember that it's a 7-game series, which is enough time for the truth to work its way out. Serious underdogs can take a game or two based on X-factors, but they rarely take 4 of 7.

I'm a Celtics fan and I had the same doubts until the Indiana series. They had trouble with Denver, the Clippers and Oklahoma, fortunately none of whom came out of the west. Tatum is a low efficiency scorer who they always go to in the clutch for some reason. I still believe they are too reliant on the three. They tend to be iso-heavy with 4 guys standing around. However, in the Indiana series, they suddenly displayed poise in the clutch. They also started coming up with great offensive stategies, and really focused in on defense. Brown who was a near-liability until December, suddenly reduced his turnovers and stopped forcing the offense at that point. Tatum was improving his passing all year. This team still has a glaring weakness in Tatums insistence on the pull-up threes, which he is lifetime 30% on. He need to be more like Jaylen and take the mid-ranges every once in a while and maybe work more off the block.

The idea that the Celtics were not “tested” and that the Mavs were gonna shock them never made any sense to me. They won 64 games in the regular season and were 12-2 through the first three rounds. At some point you have to get out of your own head and acknowledge the fact that when a team is that far ahead of everyone else in terms of team success you don’t need adversity to “test” you. As a Celtics fan I wanted to face the Mavs over the Timberwolves bc the Mavs did not match up well with them at all.

Dame is not a better player ... he is just a better scorer! Jrue is way better and a team player!
@urbaindelva7869
@urbaindelva7869 6 дней назад
Jrue is not way better than Dame. He's a way better defensive player, but that alone does not make him better than Dame, and it never has. Dame is not just a better scorer; he's a better offensive player overall: better gravity, better range, better on-ball creator, better at getting to and finishing at the rim, better shooter, better playmaker, etc. There is a reason why Dame was the best player on his own team for around a decade years and is currently the second-best player on the Bucks, while Jrue has moved around quite a bit during his time in the league despite his great impact. You can't be a better player as a 3rd or 4th option than a guy who was a 1st option for many years and is currently the 2nd option on an opposing team in the same conference as you. Btw, Dame is a team player, too. If you're implying that he isn't, you're wrong.

Don't know why you thought Philly would give the Celtics problems when we saw in past playoffs the Sixers losing to Boston and this year the Celtics had the better roster but other than that, respect for owning up to you being like everyone that picked the Mavs. You just have to next time instead of looking at the runs each team have, watch film and compare matchups. I had Celtics in 6 but tbh I knew if everything went right, the Celtics could win in 5 and they didn't even shoot the ball well compared to their regular season stats
@redcarrot1148

Celtics have been beating the Sixers to a pulp in the regular season and playoff in the last few years. They have also beaten the Bucks in their last playoff match up. To think that an improved Celtics team (both from acquisitions and in organic improvement in Jays' game) would lose to either one of those 2 teams is nonsensical. The Jays, D White and KP are at the doorstep of entering their prime with more room for growth. Pritchard and Hauser are expected to improve from experience and be even bigger contributors. This team is set up to compete if not the favorite for the title in each of the next five years. Yes, injuries can derail it but that is can be said for any team in any sport.

The Celtics were punished for making deep runs in 17 and 18 when Brown and Tatum were rookies. They should have lost in the first round or missed the playoffs every year like SGA (25 years old, just won his first playoff series). Brown and Tatum are 27 and 26 and won their first title like everyone else does. They weren't chokers because they had more success before they were ready.

This Celtics team is just one of the most complete team I've seen in a while. For all the complaints about how "easy" the Celtics had it because of injuries to other teams, the Celtics played most of the playoffs without Porzingis & still dominated teams. Celtics were just a horrible matchup for the Mavs. They had the defence to suffocate Luka & keep him off balance, and they have always known how to shut down Kyrie. They also just had too many people many weapons. Yeah, Tatum & Brown are always a threat, but you also have Derrick White & Jrue Holiday who in addition to their stellar defense, can sneakily put up a lot of points too. Mavs had no answer for that. Also have to give a shout out to Big Al Horford. I'm so glad he got his ring at long last. Well deserved too, These playoffs he really turned back the clock 10 years & looked like All Star Al Horford.
