@user-vq7vj4lu7f
@user-vq7vj4lu7f 2 года назад
@TRA Nullius what you’re saying is extreme and unnecessary. It’s valid criticism and this stuff is subjective. I’m not in love with it either. That said @will Paterson it would have been nice if you mentioned our conversations regarding what little time I had to produce this for you. I told you I was traveling at the time and very busy in my daytime production job, so had to put this altogether in a very short. On that front I don’t think you gave me a fair shake, and especially at the price point which is negligible to me. I wanted to participate for the idea of exposure and for fun. In your last videos you’ve maintained a sense of neutrality and anticipated more of that vibe. and I fully regret being a part not having the proper time to complete. This was just one of those opportunities you can’t really pass up.
@willpatersondesign
@willpatersondesign 2 года назад
@@user-vq7vj4lu7f I’ve just checked our conversation, and I agree, it wasn’t the most time in the world, given that it was 6 days, but I did check twice that it would work for you and gave ample opportunity for you to decline if it was too short for the filming schedule. I’m sad to hear you only spent an hour on the work, I think you could have likely done a lot more if you had given it more of your time, I would argue that I gave very fair feedback on the work considering as you’ve said, you only put 1 hour into it. I will always be honest on this channel, there is no point in saying something is good or excellent when it isn’t, we chose you because of your portfolio, and I think if you had given it more time and effort you wouldn’t be frustrated by my feedback, I think in reality you actually regret not giving it your best shot. If the 6 days wasn’t going to work for you (I don’t know your full schedule) I think it would have been better for you to have declined. Regarding your pricing - you set your prices, not me. I think my thoughts on the work for the price, and knowing now how little time you spent on it for that price is more than fair, and above all honest, even on a sponsored video - which is what I always aim to be. Sorry you didn’t get the positive response you wanted.
@user-vq7vj4lu7f
@user-vq7vj4lu7f 2 года назад
@@willpatersondesign that’s all fair but it wasn’t 6 days. I told you I was traveling and would only have a short time at best to complete, but wanted to participate because of the fun nature of your videos. If my service is open I would normally spend much more time with my clients and we would also go through a revisions process until the work were perfect for them. But given the gravity of the exposure it was something in my mind I had take on with whatever resources I could muster. In the delivery I reiterated I wish I had had more time to work on it, and offered more time to complete revisions or work on more concepts. I understand there is a point at which you need things completed to produce your content, but I went out of my way to make it happen for you so that you could have said content in time, and would have anticipated a tad more respect for my being cordial and flexible for you. My point is that at this price point and with the time allotted, it stated I hope it read as decent. But I for sure would have put together more concepts and refined this quite a bit with a full regular turnaround time and I respect any and all feedback. Like I said I’m not in love with it either, but it was to be presented as more of a reasonable starting point with revisions. It wasn’t made clear to me at any point that there would be no review process together after, which as you know is typical for any design job.

Interesting. Design is so subjective. Will clearly preferred more minimal designs and that's fine. I'm the exact target market Will is talking about and thought the graffiti designs were by far the most engaging. Urban, Energetic, vibrant, not to mention youthful and would stand out on the shelf.

Great video, I love this co-production! My favourites are definitely: ▪︎ the first logo by kaixx8 (It's the mockup and the colours that win me over. I do think the creative part hasn't truly come out in any of the logos.) ▪︎ the animation by vitorgrr (Absolutely amazing, really love it!) ▪︎ the second jingle by Silvio (Fits the animation so well!) Overall it's awesome to see the different directions every designer is taking and it also helps to value your own work at the right price/level.

I havent finished the Video yet, but I just want to say this before I forget it: The Chemical logo for an energy drink to me personally is a really bad Idea. It reminds people that they put a crapton of chemicals with little to absolutely no natural stuff in it, in their Body, which is not the best marketing strategy IMO. Sure, most people dont care about it, but thats because they chose to ignore it. If Adidas for example were to go like "Powered by child labour", I guess it would not sell as well. It may be a wrong train of thought, but I always try to think about whats the absolutely worst you could interpret into that, because in today society you have to consider people actively searching for reasons to be pissed about stuff.

The graffiti one was the most engaging and a welcome departure from the lightening bolt = energy drink mentality. It could have been the foundation for a really cool animation. It needed work (legibility and color tweaks) but quite frankly, for an “artistic” energy drink, it makes way more sense than the others (which were nearly carbon copies of each other). Just because it uses the element of graffiti, doesn’t automatically make it “grungy and not upscale”. It can be presented in an ultra urban, “hip” way, and as an artist myself, I would be interested in a drink that presented itself as such.

That's a shame you thought that, we were quite proud of the brief and thought it could be a really interesting one to do! Especially with the designers being the exact target audience too. Here is the brief in more detail if you wanted to see it in full, anyway. - THE BREIF: CREATIR The brand name is a fusion of Creative, Creatine and Elixir. CREATIR is a canned energy drink that helps blast through creative block on client projects and boost performance through fighting fatigue and improving concentration. Key words: Elixir, Fuel, Drive, Alert, Design, Juice, Creative, Boost, Clarity, Focus, Lucidity USP: “20% less revisions” The beverage has been compared to being like a ‘magic elixir.’ Numerous studies have revealed that for the majority of creatives who consumed CREATIR during work their projects required 20% less revisions from clients. Target Audience: CREATIR is marketed towards 18 to 34 year olds who are either studying a creative subject at University or who are a young professionals in the creative field, such as; graphic designers, artists, photographers, animators and web developers. Deliverables: CREATIR is wanting both an Icon & Logotype. The Icon & Logotype will need to delivered as a Vector file. We don’t have a set brand colour as we’re a start-up. Key Ingredients: Caffeine: Helps with alertness and concentration Creatine: Improves brain function and fights tiredness and fatigue Blueberry Anthocyanins: Improves vision, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory Anything else: Hopefully this covers most of what you’ll need but if you need more information or clarity do let me know and I’ll be happy to help! -

@@willpatersondesign my last comment may be a bit harsh, I didn't want to be disrespectful about your work, i'm sorry if you felt that way Will. My point is that the naming is a lit bit too soft for the category. Energy drinks standards are very hardcore and graphic with references like Red Bull, Monster, Dark Dog, Rockstar, Burn.. Even with a gr8 explanation, "Creatir" seems to me very discreet, and it closes a lot of the amazing possibilities of powerful universe we usually find in that category. As a long-time viewer of this series, I found that this is the episode with the less interesting graphic design propositions, and I think that the brief is one of the explanations. Thanks for ur answer !

maybe this is just me, but I feel like the Design brief could've been worded a little better to incorporate what the energy drink is and how it can help "reduce revisions" in the actual description and not solely in the USP. It seems like your description of this energy drink in the very beginning is what should've been mentioned towards the clients instead of how it was presented in the written brief. And because of this I think that is a little more so as to why you kept getting lightning bolts in the logos instead of getting more unique logos. The way you explained it in the opening part of your video had me thinking this energy drink is something special but then the design brief shown right before the first logo just made me think this is just another energy drink but since it's catered towards professionals, it needs to be more modern and cleaner looking. (Which can be fine) but to me didn't make this feel like any special energy drink. And then it got even more confusing as your judgement on these logos, especially the 5th logo or the most expensive logo you mention how they are going full force on the energy drink and not designing around it's unique selling point made it seem even more like what you had envisioned for this Drink was way different than how it was presented to everyone designing for it. the unique selling point of this drink feels like that would be something I'd add to the packaging of the drink and not in the logo itself of the drink. While I know I wouldn't be able to come up with anything better than what we saw in this video (so don't comment saying how I should do this if I think I'm better, I'm not). This is all just how I interpreted this contest. And how throughout the video it felt like there was two different Energy Drinks being described to everyone. One with the design brief vision of a performance boosting drink and another with your vision of what you wanted people to design for, and that was not coming through as clearly as it did in the opening part of your video. Would love to see another one of these videos but changed up a bit to make sure it has a clearer direction rather than 2 directions. And if I think that way, I know there has to be a few others who thought similarly to how I did when watching and maybe the designer's asked questions and you explained more in your messages back to each designer because I know I'd ask questions too to try and get a better understanding of what you wanted me to deliver so I could create a better for a design for you. Idk, just my thoughts and opinions on the video and I enjoyed it regardless!

So true. I do art, but I also studied graphic design in university and had a bit of experience working on that. And my friends who were doing logotype designs on websites similar to the one featured in the video.. They did them for, like, 30-60 usd xD (with presentation and few versions) It makes me really considering rise prices for some type of work :' 3

I can’t believe how cheap these designers are selling their skills. $100 wouldn’t cover the time I spent researching the market before starting

Honestly... These are "blagh". Nothing that would catch my eye except the Graffiti logo. Yeah it's a lightning bolt again but at least it pops. And you... Shut it down. I'm just barely out of the target market being 35 years old (for less then a month) but this would definitely catch my eye when I was say 25.It's full of color, it screams SUGAR! and the mockups looked great with it. What in your mind doesn't make it target the intended market? The only thing I see wrong with it is that it would probably have issues when downscaled.

I would love to give my own shot at the Creatir logo, I think this episode was underwhelming creatively. Everyone was pedestrian in their approach, it was very much the same, utilising a lightning bolt and I felt the typefaces weren't complimentary. I find it interesting how each desginer seemed to give the same response almost to the brief. I would have antcipated a few unique approaches.

Exactly! If anything, this would have been the time to go crazy with fun creative designs, but they were all like making corporate logos. Even the graffiti one, there was still a missed opportunity in the way it was applied to the can.

so my favourite is actually the second, even it looks like cheese... for that you could simply switch the colors between the C and the fluid and i especially love the design on the can. yes, the grafitti is could as well but the contrast between the colours match very well

Tbh, we charge $500 standard for any logo, whether your a small or large business. Course we might reconsider if you’re a huge business. But yea, never feel you have to undersell yourself. I made that mistake for years.

I'm @ 9:13 and at the beginning I was thinking about making a design of a Battery as a Energybottle. U know with plus and minus. logo coul be a "C" with a triangle what is charging. Why does everyone overthink this ? My idea is so simple and if young people see a battery like energy, i think they would buy it instantly

You seem to know what you want, but you're giving fairly open briefs and then criticising with quite a lot of inconsistency. This is the issue doing these 'challenges' as the unfortunate person to take on the project gets critiqued as if there was a really strong brief to follow.

I mean, the point is to leave things open to interpretation to a certain extent - if I had said it needs to have a blueberry in the icon, the colour blue and a specific type (as an example) they would all look the same wouldn't they? I'll share a copy of the exact brief we sent with you here, I would say it is pretty strong, as well as the last sentence being that they're welcome to clarify anything or ask any questions, too - and I believe 3 out of the 5 also had a form I filled out too answering more details for them. THE BREIF: CREATIR The brand name is a fusion of Creative, Creatine and Elixir.

Favorite Logo : the first one, sorry Will, I think that one stands out the most and screams ENERGY DRINK, hehe. Favorite Animation : 5 & 4 are real close, but slight margin to the last one. Favorite Jingle : Both were really good in my opinion, but I like the first one, even if it's cheesy, especially if I were paying for it. It might be a little cheesy, but it's definitely an earworm. I could see that in the beginning of videos, or as a short advertisement on TV, and after 4 or 5 times, you're gonna be humming it and singing the title (think "Ba da ba ba ba, I'm loving it").

Idea behind the 9:30 logo is from the conceptual point of view the best. Typography is not powerful enough and a missselect :-) I like the looks of the presentation also. In this case the line „make the logo bigger please“ would have done it. Maybe without the whitespace on bottom and gradient in the background to make it explode. We are an energy drink, not Pantone ;-)

I'm genuinely asking (nicely) but isn't this rude or offensive to the people who did this work? And so publically? I don't know, but it feels like this could be a video making money off other's work. Maybe I'm overthinking but it feels wrong, that's my initial instinct.

Hi Will. Loving your videos and the way you critique and explain your thinking but i have a question about the general approach to designing a logo. What i've heard and read quite often from graphic designers with lots of experience in the field is that logos are not supposed to be an explainer of what the product is, and that they acquire meaning over time as they get associated with a product or a service. Would you say that this is a matter of preference, current trends, or type of client you are working for? Because from what i see in your videos is that every designer attempts to do exactly that, i.e. make the logo tell or at least hint at what the product is.

Personally, i prefer Logo 3 (Concept 1) by kaixx8. His own looks very nice, attractive colors, modern and tell you it's an electrified liquid that gives energy.

I felt the magenta-on-yellow theme with as simplistic as an animation as it ended up being was immensely underwhelming. I liked the electricity-themed one more because the fade of the background to a brighter shade communicated the opening up of ones insights into their world. Additionally, the jingle for that one was epic. The soft sounds of glass tapping and electricity buzzing was a perfect understated accompaniment groove: it does not aim to be the highlight, but aims to create an environment in which you cannot help but groove away at your own work.

I’m a hobby artist with a business background, not a designer, but I am curious what a company should expect to pay for logo design in general since it’s ultra important to launching a product. If you hire a pro, it seems you’re kinda locked into their few options. And I’ve seen this happen where someone hired a high priced designer, BUT the logo they chose has a lot of practical printing issues. And despite said issues, they get chosen only to realize the cost of printing items is insane. But if you pay many people on fiver, you can spend similar money overall over many artists, and not all will be great, but you get many more different options and maybe have a better idea or unique combination of ideas for what you’d ultimately like it to be. It’s an interesting problem to have. 🤔

I know that mockups are important, but when you say "its just the logo on top of a can" sounds like you are expecting them to design a full packaging product, and is not what u pay for.
