Yeah I worked at the most popular patisery in my city and we had extreamly tallented cake decorators. for a two tired simple fondant cake with toppers that would at most be $150-$200. The first one although cute was a compleate rip off.

The first one is aesthetically the most professional looking. Its definitely "less" fun though than the 2nd. I think the 2nd wins overall even though I think it does look cluttered because its reminiscent of those crazy sundaes I use to get as a kid. Also her saying it literally smells like strawberries... That is part of a cakes experience and shouldnt be discounted.

I completely agree. I also loved the first cake. It was simple, elegant & the small details were done to perfection. Plus, I think it was the most polished of the three. The second was fun but it looked a little gaudy & messy to me. The last, though impressive, looked more suitable for a child. The design of the first is definitely more to my taste but to others the second or third is; therefore, whether someone likes or dislikes the design is obviously dependent on personal aesthetic preference - that’s why it’s so important that customers make it explicitly clear to bakers what style of design it is that they’re looking for.

The first one had the most polish. There wasn't as much decoration, but everything they did do was perfect. The others had places where the fondant wasn't laying flat or had very visible seams. It's also the cake that fell over though so...

Yeah, I think that aspect is pretty subjective. For me, the 2nd cake was WAY too overboard on the ice cream theme and was very busy... still awesome though. The third one dialed it back but still stayed on theme and had a HUGE wow factor. That said, I agree that it could have used a bit more of the theme. Like maybe the unicorn standing on one HUGE scoop of melting ice cream or something else simple that wouldn't have made it too busy. Some people though like busy... like I said, kind of subjective.

Also a little more closeup time on the cake itself so we can read the bubbles. 😁 Like closeups of pushing the fork into the cake, so we can have a better understanding of the cake’s density, moistness and such.

As someone who made cakes for years, I could see it leaning before she said anything, they didn't use proper techniques and as a customer if it fell like that I would be devastated and ask for some sort of reimbursement. She also said the flavors weren't great which at that price point all of that should have been top notch and perfect.

The 2nd cake is based off of a “kitchen sink” sundae. It’s supposed to look like that. I think they actually nailed it the most with the theme. Kitchen sink is the biggest ive cream sundae you can have normally.

The second cake made me think of Alice in wonderland with the teacup, chequered ‘floor’ etc. It was great but the alternating pretzels and sweets going around it bugged me a little, they were almost too uniform which went against the theme of the decoration, for me they could’ve either lined them up perfectly or placed them more randomly, still an awesome cake though

I felt the same. 3rd cake had a wow factor, but like it was just a regular cake with some fondant unicorn. sure, it takes lots of skill to make it, keep it straight etc, but how cake-y it actually was? lol

I feel like the second cake fit the ice cream theme better. The last cake was the most worth it because that takes a great amount of skill, considering fondant dries up really quickly. If the theme was unicorn or pastel then definitely the last cake would have won, in my book, at least.

Yeah, I saw chocolate covered pretzels, a donut, candies... unless they handmade all those extras themselves, it seems like that's what they did with some of the budget.

I didn't like how haphazard and slapped together it felt. Like, I can make a round cake with a bunch of store bought dessert items and candied stacked on top myself, the only place you got any sense of skill was the bottom dish part. Not sure if it feels worth $500 to me.

True , but they got the instruction to create a 3D creative work of art, inspired by ice cream day. Which, given the instruction, I feel they nailed it WAY more than the unicorn?! The unicorn cake was pretty but more appropriate for a 6 yo birthday party than to celebrate Ice Cream Day

But I guess it feels like all those toppings would work better on an actual ice cream sundae, whereas here it's just going to lead to potentially stale toppings and not much actual cake. And I guess I interpreted it as "ice cream themed ice cream cake" and less "cake topped like a literal sundae" but I'm obviously in the minority. No biggie, just not my preference if it was me.

I thought #2 was creative. So many places now serve a shake with a 🍩or a piece of cake on a stick, there are ice cream parlors that serve "the kitchen sink" or "ice cream boats" with 24 scoops, whip, candies, jimmies, and toppings. It looked like you were going to have sticky hands from ice cream, messy from everything that your child like excitement had to put on your ice cream. 😁
