From what I know, they actually outsource their work, in other words, they basically hire somebody near you to do it, paying them like 30/40% or what you pay them

When I was buying ram there was an option for "expert installation", I don't remember the cost, something like £50 or more... All you gotta do is push it into the right slots, jeeze.

I'm glad to see the technician himself was as good as he is. He seems like a cool dude. Sucks that the company he works for is so crazy/bad to show a really low price on their site like that. I wish people like him could work at better companies. Sadly, amazon is taking over

I see that ALL OVER in my real life, so why can't that be accurate for this video too? Sure, we don't KNOW, since a lot of the info was given by the video maker, but it's a VERY reasonable video and info. So, if the video maker was lying, he made it a VERY believable lie.
The guy did not work FOR Amazon. He worked for a 3rd party contractor who Amazon used to do the installs. The 3rd party company would get only a portion of that $81 - Amazon would get a piece of the $81 too. Factor in drive times and high cost of living and doing business in the Los Angeles area and the charge does not seem so unreasonable. How much is a professionals time worth? As a reference an auto mechanic charges $80 - $100 dollars an hour for labor. It seems from the video that the technician knew his job and that has value. All of that makes me think $200 was not so far out of line. The problem only lay in that Amazon advertised the price as $81.

My 12 yr old brother build his own gaming pc, my parents bough him all the expensive parts and case and he did all by himself…yeah the putting everything together is time consuming but it’s not a $220 job
@@rrivera497 especially if you’re young/it’s your first pc I also can see the opposite where the person might even be excited to spend all of that time to build something for themselves. I know when I was 12 I would have been off the walls with the opportunity to put a machine like that together.
I don't think I've ever charged anything lol, I remember building entire PCs for people and just told them what parts to buy. I enjoyed it, I'd still fix or upgrade anyone's PC who asked.
All in all, seems like he did a pretty decent job. As for the pricing, that is definitely dishonest to advertise an estimate less than half what it actually costs, but I don't think this guy is to blame for that.
Even the Amazon call agent was like, "damn bro...you getting scammed for this one. $220 for a mobo install? pfft here's $50. I hope your day gets better my guy"

I'm most impressed by the MSI warning about the memory sticks. There's so much room for improvement in the BIOS level stuff, it's nice to see some vendor making an effort.
Indeed, especially since the slots aren't color coded anymore. Back then you could say "put it in the same color and it'll be fine" but today, how to know what are slots A2 and B2... Maybe also throw a message when you swap RAM or CPU: _"your configuration has changed!_ _ It is suggested to enter BIOS to check if the new hardware is running to specifications."_ I actually got an old board (Asus CUSL2) that has a hint in the bios when overclocking, it tells to maybe reduce the memory multiplier because with higher clocks the RAM might not be stable.
@@HappyBeezerStudios He also got lucky that one of the two he chose at first was A2. My board gives a warning message if it's not optimal, but there must be something in the A2 slot to get any output at all (beyond a ram error led). It would seem A2 is where the cpu expects the beginning of the memory space, and post can't happen from cache alone.
I'm impressed too. Now, I wonder if the rest of the Mobo vendor do the same or will follow the same footsteps. This does not include the need to check the manual, and for some people to check manual is too much hassle. Especially when they need to use the computer ASAP.
sadly my z270 gaming mobo doesnt have anymore bios updates, considering on making a password and not having my ssds spanned and not have my os on a spindle drive :/
MSI does it right i have a msi board and the utilities and bios are awesome and it even has tiny label next to RAM slots to let you know which ones to use first for dual channel 👌

The tech should have report to Amazon what each repair price was. The estimate window would say "$81" but then say, "previous installs have ranged from $X to $Y."
You made it really easy for the repair guy. I've never seen such a clean tidy pc with perfect cable management. The avg PC I had to repair was with 2 kg of dust and 50 cables going everywhere. I wish we ever had to install PCs like yours.

Really more Amazon's fault. You can't even begin to imagine the variety of PCs a technician might have to deal with. As an enthusiast, I can help a friend install a mobo or build a PC, but working on a 15 year old Dell or a Mac is not up my alley. I bet Amazon gives the technicians few details about the new PC the mobo has to be installed in, if at all.

To be fair, some add 50%on to the pricetag equalling hundreds, for the sake of plugging in some cables. Others might only charge 30-40 dollars for the same thing, which for someone not in the know is a decent deal as it stops them potentially doing something wrong that fries their several hundred dollar machine. Yeah that was one of the factors in me picking that board when I built my system back in December. All of the Tomahawk MAX B450's work with 3000 series out of the box.
By now most B450 boards on the shelves are Ryzen 3000 ready, the MSI "max" series got released after the Ryzen 3000 launch and has guaranteed support. I ordered a new X370 board 2 months ago and the retailer even asked before shipping if they should perform a bios update, so the chance to get something new with a not Ryzen 3000 supported bios is pretty low.
But better to make it yourself, lol i was 11 when i started to change the psu, it was easiest thing, just know where were cables connected and connect the PSU right, now im on secondary school on Information Technology, where you teach about Software, Hardware and PCB things like Resistors, Inductors, AC, DC and lot more

Does replacing/installing a motherboard really make you a technician? I feel like screwing down a piece of printed computer board, plugging some shit in it and calling it a day isn’t very technical. But maybe I feel that way because I’ve done it so many times lol
Yeah, i feel like if some random person asked me to help replace their motherboard i would do 20/50 dollars. Not 200 or 160. Either way, this service is a rip off to people that don't know how upgrade or work on a PC. Understandable though if you need the service though cause some people don't want to learn how to build a PC because it be like that.

I’m just glad he pointed out and stressed the point that it wasn’t the technicians fault for price or service. I hate it when people don’t work hard enough to properly define the problem and those to blame.
I totally agree, Amazon needs to be more upfront with costs and this is another example of Amazon starting a program that's not flushed out. It makes the technician look bad like he's trying to scam customers when its Amazon that's giving false promises.

Btw, I missed the label on the motherboard packaging that lists support for Ryzen 3000 out of the box 😅 For years I've completely tuned out marketing hype badges on motherboard boxes. Turns out they can still contain useful information once in a blue moon. Part of me still thinks the tech wouldn't have asked me about BIOS updates had it been a non-MAX board though.
Don't worry, he was very agressive on Twitter after the video and acted like he did nothing wrong and everyone else was full of ****. After that.. i feel like he fully deserves to be outed as he wasnt even humble about his own mistakes.
That is SO much money, here in the UK i payed a local guy £50 ($70) to do the same job, replaced my old clapped out AMD 1100T with an 8600k, so he replaced mobo, cooler, RAM and he handled the clean install of windows, which was the main reason I payed someone to do it.
Ram would be cheap to install bc it literally takes minutes but swapping motherboards is for all intents and purposes rebuilding the entire computer which takes 2 hours or more.
Its the opposite... Amazon shows wrong prices. Thats a normal price for a technician. He has to drive from one to an other customer. Expenses like food and fuel add up. Unproductive travel time.

Me, as a Contractor, might tell you "Expect about 1000 dollars to replace a window, This includes purchase of the new window" Then roll around to your house to find out the window is actually on the second floor, up a SUPER tiny rickety staircase so I need extra help to do it, then go to inspect the old window and see the framework is rotted to fuck and needs replacing. At which point I might say "Yeah it's gunna be 2000 dollars" HOWEVER! The difference between Contractors and this Technician is that I would call you up, confirm that this is the case, inspect the window, then give you a price before I ever ordered the new window. I wouldn't tell you this when I'm at your door with the window on my truck. Nor would I charge you 1000 dollars up front (Kyle said they charged him the initial 81 dollars insta) then tell you about the possible extra

The problem is fully with Amazon estimating it to 81
Oh you cheapasses. You're paying for comfort. You can always take it to the PC repair by yourself and pay about the same amount Amazon said. If we had anything like that, it would have higher price than 220$. It's about 100€/h and i guess they wont come to your home.
The question we can legitimly ask is if the technicien has to payback any percentage to Amazon on all the jobs they provides him…. If yes then there is a real need to go further in the investigations….. 🤔 🧐

In general people tend to undervalue the labor of themselves or others, but $100/hr. just straight labor, no tools or materials save a screwdriver and some zip ties is pretty bad, even for LA's cost of living. Thing is dude probably gets enough elderly or otherwise technologically illiterate people-- especially after COVID-- where he can pretty much tell folks to take it or leave it.
@@maverikk521 yeah, i mean i will say, as a former amazon CSA, he did the best he could, giving the return credit back. Putting the money back in Kyle's bank isn't something that (at least from my experience, i know Home Services, can have separate policies and capabilities) they are able to do, at least in the entry level capacity. But, on the subject of that training you mention, there are specific policies in place in order. Like, understand the customers situation, figure out what's wrong, if there's an issue where giving a credit is the only thing you're capable of doing, then do so with XYZ dollar limit to the account. If you feel you need to do more, speak with your supervisor to have them authorize a larger credit. etc. I don't remember the exact wording, or how it works for what is most definitely an out-of-US call center he contacted. But, the policies are still all the same company wide in those regards. I know in the basic CSA department I was with that XYZ dollar limit was only like $10 or something low, and my manager was only capable of authorizing up to like the $50 or something like that after voicing my opinion and giving valid reasoning. As well as that reasoning and authorization all being marked and recirded on the customers account for when, why, and by whom, that credit, refund, replacment, etc was issued. not sure how much I can really share, it was years back i worked with them, and I'm also not sure what i am probably still under NDA about even after leaving, but that's the best i can do... at least to speak on behalf of the side of Customer Service, not the technician himself. Who, are techincally they themselves 3rd party, independent contractors hired under Amazon, to give one more level of seperation of responsibility on their actions or whatever in relation to Amazon as the contractor to contractee relationship. As far as I can see it, Amazon is more of a broker between the contractor and the customer, just setting up the matches for the people doing the work and the people ordering it. Tho, I do know there are certain standards, codes of conduct, and rules that Amazon enforces on their contractors. ok, i think i've rambled enough

However some people are also stupid and lazy.... and not willing to spend a good maybe 40mins to find a local PC shop, take it in, and actually have them install everything fuck i can get a computer here put together for 200-300 flat. and that's from bringing everything in raw and having them actually build the damn thing
Im 21 years old and ive done so many jobs that i always get loved by customers because of the drivers i always do and the cable management, and im always making sure that they dont get scammed by any other technician.
@@gwot That was the whole point, he is trying to test the service from the point of an average consumer with no knowledge of PC building. You have to think of the type of consumer who would be paying for installation. People like Bitwit with extensive knowledge wouldn't be paying for this type of service thus it makes sense in this test.

This is ridiculous. In many parts of the country, there's no way a technician can afford to make any kind of a profitable house call for $81. I do in-home technical work (not computer related) in New York City, and my rate within the city boundaries is $250 for the first hour, and $150 per additional hour. Even at that rate, people often tell me that I'm not charging enough. Between tolls, gas, mileage, and parking, just my out of pocket expenses can often be more than $81.
i would dare to say most people who opt to have "expert installation" don't have a friend who can do it.... that's kind of the point of it being an option...

@@MaxXxoUh I upgraded my PC a week ago and I have not built a PC in like forever, sure, I'm a tech... enthusiast I guess... but hell, it was so easy. Biggest problem was my physical state wich is so sorry right now my back was screwed up for 4 days after I did the install. Just mobo, cpu and ram. I had changed the PSU last year to be safe since the original Computer is from 2011. The part that always worry me is the damn front panel connectors but that was pretty stright forward too. I did forget the CPU power cable at first so it wouldnt run but I figured that out. I got a 212 Evo black edition cooler for the 3600X and that was a little bit scary cuz its so many parts but its not hard either. But people just keep telling them selfs they cant do it so they never try. I get told I'm some kind of PC expert professional genius if I plug in a USB cable.... lol
@@ToeCutter454 It's not a point of being 'incapable', people just have other interests, your comment shows exactly the type of person that typically bothers me calling me late for free labor on their computer while I don't even know them but they're a friend of a friend of my neighbor or something... You expect computers to be upgraded, maintained and serviced for free, instead of putting in the effort to do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you. Seriously, the amount of people telling me it's "a learning experience" for me to clean their crappy laptop or install some gpu in their desktop is just amazing, most of them expect you to do it for free, as if travelling there for two hours didn't cost $20 in public transport (or fuel and parking)... This is why only my best friends and immediate family can ask my help with that and know that I will help whenever I can, any other person that asks me to spend my free time saving them money without even thanking me or offering coffee while I'm working just gets to hear my price per hour.
And here I was thinking “$81?? That’s rediculous” only to find out they charged 3x as much later on. At that point you might as well just learn how to install yourself

Im building my pc from scratch buy each component 1 by 1 and watching youtube tutorial for it, well its not realy a smooth one at first but im kinda persistent and found the way finally and done with it 😅
Michael18751 well they do have to drive there and do it. It’s not as simple as you think. The miles the gas the time and the distance all matter when pricing.

Just TRAVEL TIME would put this up to at least 2 hours, with a MINIMUM of 1 hour to completely extract all of the hardware, swap everything onto the new MB and then put the new MB back into the chasis and do all of the cable management again... I'd say the real problem here is that AMAZON is completely screwing over their third party technical 'partners'... This job should have been quoted at LEAST $150, but AMAZON leaves it up to the technician to either take a bath on the job, or risk not getting any future business from Amazon...
That's why it's always good to know how to put everything together yourself or have someone close to you (friend, relative or neigbour) to do it for you for free or for very less amount.
I paid a guy to bend the hardtubing for my custom water loop. The day after i realized not all the air bubbles in the tubing have dispersed yet. Turns out those "air bubbles" were plastic shavings from when he cut the tubes. Furthermore, the tubes were not chamfered, and so an O-ring was cut up and part of that O-ring was lodged inside the gpu water block. And so i spent the next 4 hours dissasembling the loop and water blocks to clean out plastic shavings and O-rings. Thats $190 and 3 hour drive to drop off and pick it up was a waste.
I just played just £10 to have a new power supply installed as I'm to lazy for it even though I know how. he also repaired some impossible bugs that I was dealing with for just a little bit more. the guy I go to would do a full PC build for not even half of what this guy charges.
Some people are absolutely hardware illiterate and unfortunately some people take advantage of that. They they know they need to upgrade their some parts and are happy to pay someone else to do it.
Im sure people with no frame of reference for what these things take or should cost do it all the time. "Oh installing a motherboard sounds terribly complicated, I better have a professional do it".

Well, technically, no. Not the whole point, anyway. The primary reason for the MAX version is to include a bigger BIOS, that'll be able to support future BIOS updates. Not strictly for Zen2 out of the box compatibility. As the BIOS in the original board was lacking and MSI doubted whether it'd be able to support these upcoming updates.
