Definitely looked like the resin was soaking into the foam and pushing out the air inside as it cured causing the bubbles. Still looked amazing!

To be honest, after you fixed the situation, I think that, the bubbles left, actually worked in your favour. This was beyond epic!!! I was just going to say, if ever you were going to have bubbles in resin work, this kind of piece would literally be perfect! I agree, they actually add to the piece, especially the bubble trail around her hand! So cool!

true especially with the bubble at the mermaid's hand it looks like she's/he's touching a bubble that escaped some place

With the bubbles, it looks like the mermaid is an agent in the scene, instead of a passive element without. Does that make sense?

@@ericbrooke9618 Actually, I think this is one question we really cannot anticipate how it will turn out: Data archeology is something that the future will most likely bring, but we don't know how it will look, how available source material will be (in the end, we produce like soooooo much more potential sources than any other generation before us). Ah, I'd love to timetravel to the future just to see how they regard our times.

I get where yall are coming from but hear me out. If we look at every time something astonishing is discovered. You never would have thought about it before its existence right? Would you believe humans could watch anything or contact anyone from anywhere around the world a 100 years ago? Heres why i doubt youtube will still exist 2000 years later. There will be something completely different than what we expected that will defeat youtube. And you really think that the owner of youtube will be passed on the perfect person EVERY time for 2000 years? A lot of things can go wrong. I do not expect any app to survive more than 200 years on the internet. There is waaay too much space for something other than youtube. It could be similair to youtube like being able to post videos on the app, but it will come with its differences. I havent mentioned this, but in response to Amanda Galletti; is it really possible to find this video 2000 years later IF youtube would still exist? By that time too much stuff will be on the internet. Sooo many videos would exist that this video will get lost in history. Maybe there will be something completely different than videos that the human hasnt even thought of yet. So to sum it all up: yA never know 😂 Edit: I just realised that what Luthril said can go against the part where i said that this video will get lost in history. That can very much come to exist. Another point i made tho is the fact that youtube will probably not be a thing anymore. To be more specific. Nobody will use it anymore. And yes with the help of data archeology this video could be found. But how specifically this video? How would they know the title or channel? Cross off every single video till the right video is found? Maybe other apps will come into existence similair to yt. How would they know what app to search? How would they even know if there is a video about it? Soooo its very much impossible to find specifically this video.

It definitely helps that the mermaid looks as if she's looking at the bubbles.

Any porous material needs to be sealed, if you don't want or expect bubbles. Definitely stuff like foam, wood, sponge, etc. But, her mistake actually added to the scene. That big bubble can be drilled and filled with a syringe but again, works out for effect.

A good alternative would be to use clay or putty to make things instead of foam. As far as the mermaid's hand goes it could have been air trapped in the FDM print, especially if it was hollow.

I am late to the party, but I was wondering if you or someone has a theory on the forming of the bubble on her hand too, thats an extremely odd one. its like it bursted out from somewhere and started to raise to the surface, but it followed the orientation of the scene and not the physical realm :D (cause it was poured laying on the back)

TOTALLY AGREE!! Exactly what I was thinking….. they said okay but we’re going to add to it and make it better. Especially the mermaid hand I don’t think it would have be a great without that and the bubbles coming from the bridge. Everything happens and works out like it’s meant it. GREAT JOB!!!😊

The problem is that bubbles are not supposed to be there by design. If think she didnt vaccumed the epoxy- thats the main reason of bubbles in molded stuff.

@@angeltensey oh, for sure. I get that. I was just commenting that she got lucky when the bubbles wound up being passable as an intended thing. I know she didn't intend for them to be there. They could have completely ruined the project. That's what I meant. :)

I agree that pre-sealing the foam with some clear resin or paint could have helped. Another thought is that I've seen woodworkers who pour acrylic, using a pressure chamber or a vacuum chamber to reduce bubbles in their castings. But a pressure chamber can sometimes wreak havoc on foam, since many foam types have air bubbles in them to give volume.

@@tantamounted Another solution could be to use the foam bridge to make a casting mold for a different material, something that won't produce the bubbles.

Yes! Silicone mold the foam after sealing it with spray polyurethane and then fill with resin. Resin-cast inserts could also be layered/accented for further dynamics

I was just about to explain about the foam, any open cell foam will do this as the resin migrates into the voids the gas must escape. Not sure what caused the gas inclusion around the mermaid's hand, maybe the hollow space inside the 3d print? Either way a layer of UV resin painted on should seal it.

I agree with these points! Also coming in to point out, GlassCast 3 is a coating resin. For that second to last and final layer you really need a deep pour. That's a large volume of resin! No shade, of course! It came out beautifully. Just adding tips for the future or anyone looking to make the same!

had to learn the difference between resins on the hard way. I made a deep pour and at the morning it was completely cracked due to the heat

@@kaedeshirakawa1979 it's a painful one, for sure! Alumilite has this text line thing where they send you promos, highlight makers, and ask for feedback sometimes. It's honestly awesome, and I've had some great convos with them on there! During one they asked what people wanted them to focus more on and I said, "Oh! Please do more videos talking about the differences in resins and how to choose one!" Because that's one of the hardest, most expensive parts of the resin learning curve. Especially if you started a few years ago when there were less resources. But I still see very experienced casters make mistakes in resin choce all the time. And it's easy to do! Like, no shade to anyone who's learning, or even experienced, who's making these mistakes. The more we can proliferate the maker scene with knowledge, the better we can all be in our crafts!

That’s what I was thinking too when she first said she didn’t want bubbles I was thinking bubbles in certain spaces may be kinda cool 🤔 Then when she actually got the bubbles saying the Resin Gods weren’t with her I was like “Yes they were! The bubbles are what it needed there!” This turned out SO beautiful I love everything about this!!! 😍👌🏽

Makign several ThIn, very thin layers should reduce it since the air will flow out trough the easiest path ( the part exposed to atmosphere)

This could be used to make a favorite path for the extending gas. The bubbles around the bridge are a plus, not a minus.

i wonder if you could use stabilizing resin on the foam before painting it to prevent bubbles

Yeah, the last two pours should have been done in 3 or 4 pours. Still turned out great though.

Sealing the foam bridge before the pour coulda helped.

I definitely agree with the too big pour, but I think she glued the mermaid's hand down which is what confuses me the most. I guess she could have been forced off of the glue before it dried, but still a little weird

My guess regarding the mermaid bubble is that the air is from the mermaid itself. 3d printed parts can have voids due to defects/problems during printing even if 100% fill is used

Maybe coat it in resin first before submerging it into the resin (so coat - harden - place - pour)

Also maybe the large quantity of epoxy caused too much heat.

There are two reasons it might be, the first is the glue she used, some two part epoxy and glues off-gases as it cures, I am not sure what she used for that if it was the same resin or a different two part epoxy. The more likely cause is actually the materials, filament prints tend to have voids especially if she didn't set it to have 100% infill. The same with the foam, those are very likely the cause of the bubbles. Very likely they had air trapped in them and when exposed to heat air expands and will get out of the trapped materials.
