There's this quote in a song "why worship legends when you know that you can join them". And I love it because it like a phrase of I know I will practice and going enough to become that amazing painter I want to be. Like it's so strong in my head that'd it's not a question of will I, it's a question of when, and what do I have to grind to get there.

I struggle with starting a part, like I’ll have a hot streak where I’m painting everyday or I’m just in the zone. Then suddenly I’m in a rut I cannot make myself start either the next one., or even finish the previous. Is bad but I know I just need to do it , see what happens. It’s always scary painting at times bc you’ll look at the painting and go “oh my…that’s rough but process! Process will pay off” Seeing your work is truly inspiring, I now want to get more canvases. Usually what makes me do anything is the aspect of “if I give this to someone, I can do it” I should learn to paint for myself and not focus on “what will they like” and more of “let’s do what I want to”

“If your job is doing what you live, you will never work a day in your life.” This old saying is completely wrong. If your job is doing something you love, you will eventually hate what you do. You have made the right choice in having a job separate from what you love. You will love it forever. See Sargent’s attitude later in life. Ask any professional photographer. It is the same story. The hardest part is being labelled, selfish or not social …I do like my friends etc.. but I don’t want to go out all the time and drink I’d rather spend time painting and use that money to buy tubes of paint that I need. I have told people that I’m trying to organise myself for an exhibition and that it takes time and it’s quite an inward journey. yet people don’t really listen or understand unless they’re an artist themselves .. Unfortunately that is why I only have one or two friends at the most… people don’t get it … fortunately I’m happy with my solitude gives me time to think and paint thanks for your video🙏💕

if you spend >1hr a day painting, how much time do you spend prepping canvases and varnishing stuff and deciding/ lining up what photos to paint and, i dunno, thumbnailing composition or whatever? or is that part of your 1hr - like its just time dedicated to the hobby. Im sorta trying to spend hobby time every day but if I’m burnt out from real job then I can do something more mindless like mixing paint for colour charts or something
@ScottHebertArt
@ScottHebertArt 3 месяца назад

@yay-cat
@yay-cat 3 месяца назад
how many of the things you paint are from your own photos? Im trying to take a multi-pronged approach. So i do black and white photography because just seeing the values helps me with composition but I shoot B&W jpegs and save a copy in RAW so i can goof around with colours. so then very tediously i try to edit my few selected photos to have colour harmony like this one I’m tuning so its more blue and orange complimentary. those references I try to paint somewhat photo realistically (obviously with some artistic choices like softening some lines while keeping compositionally important ones crisp). And these paintings i do in layers - maybe using grisaille or maybe a limited palette or …. But I find parts of this process tedious and end up working in small sections (like today im just painting that hand) whereas painting the whole thing all at once is more fun to me. so i’ve started going to weekly life drawing sessions - pay a small fee to be part of a group drawing a live model. Time is limited and results are just for practice with no real expectations - so its just for the fun of art. Im hoping to try and take oil paints to these sessions one day and have a stab at alla prima portrait painting. My theory is that i need to work on different techniques and approaches at the same time and also work on different aspects - like focussing on composition and figuring out what the painting expresses and what types of settings people are in etc. like im betting on it being good for my growth to simultaneously work on both near-photorealism and also on how to convey something with the fewest number of brush strokes possible. When i settle into a style it might be somewhere in between

This is a person who exhibits what is a very 'real' talent...; so, therefore, why not choose to nurture it to the max. ;-) However, for those people who are far less 'talented'...; then, I think, it's a hell of a lot harder to commit to such long term goals. When one finds oneself outputting 'endless disaster after endless disaster'...; then, of course, this is NOT in the least bit encouraging.

Painting beautiful girls and women are a dime a dozen and you’re Style although done well is also not all that exciting, but you certainly have the talent and work ethic to become very good, now great imo “I don’t know”. That first one reminds me of Mucha or even Klimt but I consider them extraordinary. yep mindset is everything when it comes to art, and being an artist can be selfish and also lonely, im not saying artists are the typical emo loner trying to create their masterpiece and are broke doing it, wearing rags and sleeping on a mattress on the floor😝 they can be of course, but its def hard to be a 'normal' creative person and try to keep up appearances of being a 'normal' interactive person in the world and do all of the things people expect in a life, when all you want to do is go draw something 😛 and you have a plan for your paintings and you def have the potential to be great, and age never matters when it comes to art and when someone is dedicated to creating🥰

"oh this sucks".. when i paint and am involved, all kinds of thoughts run thru my brain. like a never-ending movie. I have learned to accept those thoughts as a confessional. (I am not religious or catholic). the other side of my brain lets me know, you did this. you said that. you believe. you don't believe.etc. it's like opening pandora's box because that is the only time i let her out. so i say to her, yes you speak the truth but in my defense, this is my penance. (that's way to religious sounding) but much cheaper and probably more educational than a $ 200-an-hour psychiatrist with a pick axe. practicing your art is cleaning out the attic and filling it with better ideas. very nice paintings. technique is so important. you can turn this education into $ by widening your subject matter. like commissions, and galleries of course but the subjects will probably need to be less personal. maybe add elements that tell a story. maybe one apple or a bee sting or a storm on the horizon, a storyline from a myth or current event. a twist or hook. keep it up.

Honest and constructive criticism: you are over blending your flesh tints, and using the same kind of light and palette, over and over again…. Look at Jeremy Mann and other figurative painters, and break up your brush work a bit. You are working to a formula which is great, it means you have fundamentals, but if you really wanna step up a level you need to start taking some risks, explore your mark making and different palettes. You want to be throwing out at least half your work, and not varnishing it all. You also need to start thinking about your subject matter and painting pictures that aren’t just ‘picturesque’ but that speak to something deeper than just ‘I am painting pretty pictures competently’… You have everything you need, a work ethic and solid fundamentals. If you really want to break through find a way of making pictures that tell us a story we haven’t seen before, something that is absolutely about your actual lived experience, not what you think people want to see, not even what YOU want to see, but something true to your life experience. Start at work, would be my suggestion. A self portrait with your streaming set up in it, painted in halogens and neons, rather than ambient light? Paint it from life, using a large mirror, rather than a photo? Good luck man, it’s an amazing project.

Could say the same about mark carder, you probably know him. Dude is seriously successful. Stevenrufini3515 mate, you don't have a clue. And whose photographs are they? It's called good reference. How the f are you supposed to be out on location hiring models and painting outdoors when you have to work full time and edit the videos and everything else. There aren't infinite hours in a day.
