I agree honestly. the last four years I've been in college, I've heard nothing but "Why don't you do a trade? Be a plumber!". But what if I don't want to be a plumber? What if I want to learn and concentrate in something and research in a field that I find interesting? As much antagonism there is towards people struggling to pay student debt, there's also antagonism against post-secondary education. I give the free pass on those who don't go to college because they don't want to, but god forbid I go to college in something I want to do? Anyways, keep hustling my friends. We got this. P.S. I've also been saying a trend that we're going to college on American taxpayer money and we shouldn't take advantage of it- this is true if you go to a public state university; however, we're paying back way more in interest--> which I'm assuming goes to our military

she can choose to pay more if she wanted to. what you're referring to is called the amortization schedule. All loans, not just student loans, follow a similar concept. Loaners frontload the interest payments, and as time goes by, more of the bill will goes towards the principal. This is to protect the loaner from not ever getting their money back in full. to lower her interest payment she needs to a) pay more per month or b) re-fi to get a lower interest rate. the same concept applies to a mortgage btw.
@AmusedChild
@AmusedChild 6 лет назад
Student loans actually have very low interest. I understood what I was getting into when I financed my education. Plus, I worked as a waitress in college. I have always overpaid my loans - that lowers the interest you end up paying.

"...I studied drama and communications..." There in lies the problem. As a wise internet commenter once advised, "don't go to college to find a major, go and find a career." Words to live by. Community college would have been the best place to study drama. Sign up during the summer and join the drama club, take an arts class etc. It costs far less and you still get a chance to do what you live without the insane cost. College is no joke and if any major costs you as much as a house costs, then it better be something in which you will yield returns.

I don’t understand you guys. It’s expected as a society, or at least it’s the norm, that parents take care of all of their child‘s financial needs until they’re 18. And yet we expect them to magically know as soon as they turn 18 how to make decisions that are potentially worth 100s of thousands of dollars? That is completely illogical. Unless we mandate financial literacy courses starting from elementary school, we can’t give 18 year olds the full responsibility to make those kinds of decisions. Like the girl said in the video, someone needs to wait until they’re 21 to spend $5 on a Budlight, but yet they’re somehow old enough to get into tens of thousands of dollars of debt when they decide on a college as seniors in high school? Makes absolutely no sense. The US is the only developed country with a student loan crisis like this. Can someone please explain to me why that is? This is a national shame.

FinTheHuman because its a useless major that wont equal lots of jobs out of school and even if you get a job in the field the pay is going to be dirt. Colleges/Universities put these filler degrees to boost enrollment and make the maximum amount of money from people paying to go to school there. People take these degrees because they're easier then say computer engineering and still gives you that college experience and allow you to say you've gone to college but you might as well not have.

I know guidance councillors are supposed to ask important questions like what a child wants to do after school but are they actually tell them what the "costs" associated with those dreams are? It is HIGHLY unfair to call this person out and say "what did you expect with that degree?" ...this should have been brought to her attention by her teachers in highschool...so they she could have had a chance to switch to a more (financially) rewarding career.

There are factors that one must take in this video: 1) She graduated from Tufts University. TUFTS UNIVERSITY. A private university which costs two or three TIMES more than a typical state university. 2) She studied Drama and Communications at a private university. I appreciate that she wants a degree in the field. But is going to a costly university while having a degree that could be obtained on a regular public university or a community college worth it? Drama and Communications degree does not also guarantee you a stable job after college. Not hating on her degree but on the context of the student debt, the degree isn't worth the debt. She could literally be an IT graduate at a community college and earn 60k a year directly after with little or no debt. 3) She took in the loans during the economic crash in 2008-2009; the interest rate on loans was really high during that time. The interest rates have since generally decreased after the recession. While it's ridiculous to think that the system is totally flawed and must be reformed, also consider her own actions.

My youngest brother graduated high school this year and has learned what not to do by the previous generation. You can not compare your situation to hers. She got a degree in a field she loves and was told by everyone that it was a smart decision. If she were to go to college now in 2018, she would have made different choices. Choosing to study Drama and Communications in Tufts University was definitely a mistake on Britney's part. She could have chosen to study at a less prestigious university and still receive a similar quality of education with much less expense. She also chose a loan option with around 9% interest when there's many out there that offer a fixed rate of around 3-6%. A lot of her problems boil down to her not being well educated in financial matters and the blame for that would rest on herself, her parents, and perhaps the school system for not requiring a class that deals with these problems. Now that she's in this situation, she has options to sign up for an income-driven repayment plan, loan forgiveness programs, and deferment or forbearance. Her last resort would be to file bankruptcy and have her student loans discharged if she meets certain conditions (Brunner test), but it shouldn't have to come to that if she chooses her options wisely this time around.

Watching this video made me so anxious that I felt sick to my stomach. She definitely could've made better choices, but I was just as naive as she was when I was starting college. You spend your whole life being told to just do well in school and things will turn out, but no one really tells you the grim reality. The student loan industry is just criminal. It preys on people.

+TheMabes69 this does sort of make me understand it better when people would kind of mock my major (art history). Because right out of college there aren’t many high paying jobs for those in my field, unlike those who majored in sciences, math, and nursing, for example, where there is greater access to money. I do love my field but it makes more sense if you look at things from the perspective of how will you pay for these loans?

My plumber is not hurting for money ya'll. Everyone needs plumbing. 4. Major In something that will allow you to make enough money to actually repay it. 5. Once graduating make extra payment ON THE HIGHEST INTEREST LOAN. Your loan amount is a sum of a bunch of smaller loans taken out over the span of college. 6. If you're over 19 and live on your own (and can prove it with bill and rent receipts) then most schools will stop counting your parents income and will only count yours, making you qualify for financial aid. I have $106k in loans. My monthly payments have increased to $1600 a month. I have two jobs, barely scraping by, and even my parents have to help me with my student loans. The only thing my loans offered was to go into forbearance, which i can't afford to do. My paychecks are already taxed and the money goes to the government, and yet I still have to pay them again on my loans. I literally can't live like this. I have broken down on multiple occasions because of this. I don't regret going to college. No one should feel bad or regret getting an education. No reason, huh. Let's see. Let's round the average cost of Uni/yr is about $15k for students that had to dorm. So $15kx4 years=$60k (+$5k/year for student housing for anyone who dorms), factor in textbooks/supplies, food, transport, school fees (computer usage, Greek Life if you want to look even better on a resume), and tack on the growing interest rate while you're in school... Yeah $100k range sounds about right. This isn't even factoring whether or not the institution is public/private. The University I went to had the same tuition rate regardless if you majored in biochemistry or art. But hey, I'm no doctor. Don't mind me at all.

Look at community colleges and state schools where you have residency. The tuition is far cheaper. If you plan to go to college research ahead of time to see if the degree is marketable or in demand. If not, look into a trade. So many electricians and plumbers are going to be retiring in the coming years. Those jobs need to be filled. Also, look into a union apprenticeship, the training and skills they’ll teach you will be cheap, if not free.

Yes It's Me> That's only part of it. It's worth a shot if there is no other better or more practical suggestion to pay the loan off. No one forced students to take out the loans. Student loans do attract those young people who were not lucky enough to have good personal finance education or parents who knew how to handle money properly. Mistakes have been made by choice, they just need to treat it as such and work hard to pay it off, and hopefully remember this lesson so they can teach their future children not to repeat their mistakes.

Everyone is trying to say that her major was the problem but it's not. The problem is the interest is so high she's barely paid anything on her loan for the past 8 years. The problem is students are not told exactly what a loan entails. The problem is her family had other kids to take care of but that isn't considered when it comes to financial aid, all they see is the number not the other needs that number goes to. The problem is her entire life is revolving around getting these loans paid off. The problem is that if anything happens to her and she cannot pay the loan she can't just declare bankruptcy like with other loans, they will come after her family. The problem is instead of realizing that this is a fucked up situation for anyone to be in, people attack her choice of major and shut down any conversation there is to be had about student loans.

@david109

Choosing to study Drama and Communications in Tufts University is DEFINITELY the problem. Don't even try to argue otherwise. Her last resort would be to file bankruptcy, but it shouldn't have to come to that if she chooses her options wisely this time around.
@ElfriedeRose

@vianjelos
@vianjelos 6 лет назад
David The problem is that loans and the like are riddled with incoherant terms that regulat people dont really understand. A class on finances(credit, mortgages, student loand ect) being mandatory in HS would help, or the government could require a financial advisior(one who works for the state or school and not the banks giving out loans) be required prior to sighning any student loans..that way someone is there to guide you through the loan who has your best intrest in mind. I hope the governmeny steps in to fix this because student loans adversly affect the economy..as money that would usually be spent on recreation or as luxury expenses is spent on loans..the government doesnt give two shits about us ordinary citizens..but it cares about its corporate buddies and most of them could stand to gain a lot of cash by having a vested intrest in tackling the student loan problem.

Currently at a community college and I came to the point where I realize school is not for me and the things I want to do don’t require a degree. I have decide to drop out once spring semester finishes so my record won’t have a lot of W’s. financial aid gave me over 14k in grants theses 2 yrs I’ve been here and I know for a fact I’ll have to pay some of it if not all back (hopefully I can pay it off in a year). The point is go to a community college if you aren’t sure what you want to do, explore. It is way cheaper and affordable to pay out of pocket, if you realize school is not for you simply don’t go or drop out of community college, you will be in less debt than going to a 4 yr straight out of high school. Is a waste to jump to a 4 yr without knowing what you want to major in.

Better yet, why the hell hasn't she consolidated all her student loans into a single one with a repayment term extending up to 30 years so her monthly payments will be lower? Even an income contingency repayment plan will allow extensions to as much as 25 years.

Most private loans don’t have the IBR option. With the amount she has outstanding, I’m sure at least half of the amount is not government direct. Also, if they are private, they couldn’t be consolidated, only refinanced. But she doesn’t make enough money to qualify for refinance most likely. It’s like taking out a mortgage.

Even with a great salary $900 a month just to student loans. Forget about mortgage, property taxes, a car, retirement, savings.

I pay $1100 a month in student loans. I could be paying $550 but I want to pay it off as quickly as possible. 2.5 years left!

I'm a sophomore, and my advice is simply do not take out more then necessary. Also, start making payment now. If you do it now by paying say, $20 dollars a month you'll be in a pretty nice place by the time you graduate. Nothing to fear :)

Generally speaking, if you are afraid this will happen to you, it won't. Know what you are major makes, what your school is costing you, and don't spend more then is needed. Do the math, then make reasonable choices.

Just don't fall into the trap of spending borrowed money trying to keep up with the rich kids. Say no to spring break in Cabo: use your break to double down on your work hours and make extra money. Say no to the high life: don't spend borrowed money on clothes. Look, if you have to borrow money to go to school, you really can't afford those frills. I'm not saying don't have fun; I am saying don't dig yourself a hole that you'll struggle to get out of.
