It's amazing how much better third person action gameplay looks when the person playing knows the controller has a right analog stick. IGN's video actively made the game look bad.
It is bad the animations look like AA jank and some of the features belong in the early 2000's there is no damn excuse for either with thier time and budget
It's smart to say that? They know everybody hated it. The dumbest thing they could do is say we liked the trailer and it represents the game well. If they want it to sell well, they have to say they didn't like it.
@@bryandedon7459nah tbf the marketing team has fucked up big time as always. I'm still on the fence for that game but if the rest of what Bioware has shown was like that 1st trailer, yeah it would have been in my ignore list lol
Open worlds were cool because they let you do something we hadn't been able to at the time: explore a world. But then theY focused on the open part over the world part. And as usual, gaming chased a trend instead of understanding why it was trending in the first place. They're ALL so creatively bankrupt it's just disheartening.
from what I've heard from previews, it seems like this game has very strong direction. From side quests to main quests, everything is relevant either to the world, characters, or story. I think that's what often goes to the wayside in these huge productions. I'm thrilled to hear the feedback from the previews aren't doom and gloom. Dragon age fans deserve a big win!!
Maybe it's judging a book by it's hideous cover. Maybe the game's 1/3 is heavily loaded with all the features and the rest is rushed garbage. Maybe they should fire the UI designer.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion from watching all of the videos and reading all of the articles. I can’t say I have much hope for the game to me. This feels nothing looks nothing and doesn’t have any of the qualities that I remember from dragon age origins. I know this is a bit of a hot, take but I do think that’s the only legitimately great DA game I don’t think inquisition is bad but Underwhelming and I think it’s relatively agreed-upon that 2 is kind of bad I’m not telling you that you’re wrong by the way like I said you’re entitled to judge the game how you see it and want to but as somebody who has loved a vast majority of BioWares catalog, especially the pre-2010 era but I think I also need to be honest with myself that that developer is very very long gone and has been for a very long time. I’ll obviously try the game even though I know deep down, I’m not going to enjoy it most likely but I also think it’s only right for me to play. What’s probably going to be their last game realistically given I have played so many of their games throughout my life, but like I said, I hope I’m wrong but I unfortunately don’t think I will be
The person who was in charge of that first trailer should be fired immediately. Completely ruined the hype for a lot of people. But everything I have seen since then and heard since then was nothing but positive. Seriously Bioware deserves a win. I really want that next Mass Effect Game to happen so Dragon Age 4 better be a Banger.
People claim the industry has a toxic positivity problem, well to the same degree it has a toxic negativity problem. Most people on youtube tend to want to hate something just for the sake of hating, people love to dwell on the negative. The game looks interesting, but it can truly only be judged when it is released.
I'm honestly so glad that they chose a more focused approach to mission design and exploration. I hated, HATED the open areas in Inquisition, completely soured the experience for me. I still have my reservations about the game, but this video is a great step in the right direction imo, game seems to be taking a lot from previous DA titles and Mass Effect as well, and that's always good to see.
Honestly for me there so few open worlds i look forward to anymore Kingdom come 2 and GTA6 are the onmy ones i care about Because KCD1 and RDR2 blew me away with their open worlds with how alive they are. More games need to be linear there many benefits.
This i can agree on. I'll be honest, the art style is appealing yes. But somehow it just gives me such poopoo doodoo woke vibes. It looks soooooooooo forced inclusivity. I'll reserve full judgement until it drops.

Should we buy a game worth 70 for those 2 hours of fun and 30 hours of meh. In either case what I'm pointing out is that you can't really trust people who get invited to these exclusive events because they are essentially being bribed with special treatment. If this was a fair situation, they would have invited content creators who are very negative about the game and it shouldn't matter if they are big or small creators. I mean we recently had that ubisoft debacle where they gave creators and all expenses paid trip to Disneyland. You seriously expect an unbiased review from these guys?

@Odder-Being Why do you need someone's opinions on that though? I'd suggest that you don't look to youtubers for validation on topics you already have a firm stance on. All we should be looking for from these people are the facts about the game. Unless a content creator is specially into political and social commentary as their main thing then I at least don't care much about what they are into.

*sighs* if you want this game to fail, nothing will change your mind. If you want this game to be good, this is encouraging. Objectively. This is one of my favorite franchises. Love Origins to pieces. Inquisition is still worth replays here and there to me. I’m a big lore nerd and the development of some things in Inquisition was CRAZY good as far as I’m concerned. All that said, this game being in development hell for 10 years scared me. The first trailer almost made me bury it. I’ve felt the devs almost going double time trying to get the perception changed based on that initial bad taste for a lot of us. As far as I’m concerned, everything has been done well enough to warrant being optimistic again. If you want to hate this game and throw everything BioWare in a dumpster fire, that’s fine, do you. If you’re on the fence… give it a chance. I want it to be good and I’ll buy it on release, I’m on that side. But if BioWare somehow releases a worthy addition to my favorite franchise, I’m gonna be soooo much more than pleasantly surprised.
I agree with everything you said except for the buy on release part. I would encourage everyone to wait for reviews from multiple sources before buying.

Devs have confirmed you can. If you look at some of the combat trailers, like the first Warrior gameplay, they have the damage numbers turned off on that one.
For now I remain cautiously optimistic. As for Bellara, if she's the same as in the audio story episode that released today, then I personally think I'll like her just fine. Hope she doesn't drag me into further crab battles though. 👀

Curious though Luke since you said yourself that you weren't really into the franchise before, but your wife was. What's her impressions or take on it? As a Dragon Age vet, I'm kind of mixed on a lot of the changes, it feels like we're going thru the same changes that happened from Origins to DA2 all over again.
Also perhaps this is as intended, meaning this game was meant to be a soft reboot, picking up from Inquisition but with the intention of bringing in brand new players that previously could not get into the DA series...

I’m actually shocked that you don’t need the EA launcher on Steam. They’re really trying to maximize sales for this game, which leads me to believe that they think it can sell really well. That and they’re selling it for $60 instead of $70. The gameplay is like a hybrid of Mass Effect and DA2, which I think is great. I’m thinking an 8-8.5/10 here, so not bad at all. I gave Inquisition a 7 because the combat is terrible, the open world activities are some of the worst in any game and the amount of “open world grind features” made the entire thing a boring chore. The characters, writing, voice acting and landscapes are solid, though. Lastly, I’m hoping that a mod maker will change some of the models in this game (Darkspawn, anyone?). Long live PC.
I think its the opposite. Do you know what kind of hopelessness a corp like EA needs to face to take so many measures to sell a game. These are the very same people who have been known for being the most anti consumer company in the US and thats saying something. They must really be sweating and shitting themselves regarding this game if they are forced to use pro consumer tactics like this. I’ve invested multiple 100s of hours into the DA franchise. Every game had multiple play through using different character choices, with different classes, on different difficulties. Unlocking every trophy on PS4 and achievements on 360. Even the DLC and yes, DA2… If BioWare can deliver a great story with engaging characters, and good (doesn’t have to be amazing) gameplay, and can deliver the game in a playable state, I’ll probably buy this AFTER launch…

in dragon age you always were able to stop the battle and to give direct commands to companions. That was a good thing, cause you could basically have all the classes in your team under your control.
Inquisitions "open" maps were pretty inconsistent. Some areas kooked good, and were fun to run. Some were just absolute pointless snd there for bloat. For story length, DAI is 40-50 if you just do the story snd enough side stuff to get the power you need. So i expect this to be similar tbh
The thing I like the most is that I'm seeing a lot of details they tossed into the games during the past, with a care to refine those same aspects in the most functional and fun way possible. Honestly I didn't care about this because of the record since Andromeda, but Halloween seems kinda interesting this time around. Hopefully, BioWare is back
I'm so glad they had you play. and that you made this video. Most vids about Veilguard seem to be from people who are already committed to loving it just because it's Dragon Age, and I've been taken aback by certain people's poor treatment of skeptics (not cynics!) like me when we express doubts or even questions. Hearing details on the game from someone like you is WAY more comforting than just hearing more uncritical positivity from the same fans over and over. Thank you! I'm less fearful now.

This comment section is exhausting. The „gaming community” is so consumed with hate and picking sides in the so-called American „culture wars” that it became basically impossible to express an honest opinion about any given game. It's like trying to explain nuance and reason to kindergarten kids. Luke must be really disappointed and tired of this shit. I actually feel bad for him and for all the other serious content creators that have to handle these fucked-up meaningless conversations all the time.
For people confused about why you only control 1 character now: the director of DA 1-3 games Mark Darrah explains on his RU-vid channel that less than 1% of players ever used the tactical camera in DA:O after tutorials - it was only added to DA:I to avoid negative press. I have ~200 hours in DA:I and I could count on one hand the times I've controlled the rest of my party outside of selecting a few spells. The party tactics and command system was incredible.
If it's a good change or not (personally, I think it isn't) we'll see until the game comes out I think. However, about what Darrah said: You only control 1 character because this game was intended as a live service game at first, it has nothing to do with "people don't use the tactical camera" (because it doesn't even make sense, one thing has nothing to do with the other), they rebooted this game so many times that it's so obvious they didn't have time to develop the capacity to change characters (or they simply didn't want to) nor to develop the party members themselves, as so far they seem to work only as extra abilities for the player. And before you say "but Mark Darrah said..." This is the same man that left Bioware and started trashing them, and once he was rehired he started licking their boots again. He has no credibility in my book.
That's subjective because the tactical camera and switching of characters I used constantly in my DA:I playthrough. I didn't use it in DA:O because it's not on the console version
This is also why games like Starfield will never get their Cyberpunk moment. Everyone will hate something without reason if their minds stuck to it. Doesn't matter how much you try to fix, or make it better. Only way to beat them is through a different medium to attract a different audience to drown out the mindless crowd like Cyberpunk making an anime. Edgelords will cry that their fantasy game doesn't look like dark fantasy (not ever game is trying to imitate Dark Souls).
The classic ..."I played this game and it's awesome" response early access users get. How about you wait until it comes out instead of listening to ONE person's take and believing it?
This game is just like any other game before it - people who want to hate it will hate it, and people who want to like it will like it. I've never played a game that I loved 100% as there are always design choices and play styles that aren't for everyone, but I don't let those little things take away from my overall enjoyment of a game. I loved the original Mass Effect trilogy and I also really enjoyed Andromeda precisely BECAUSE it was different; I didn't want the same game again. Similarly, I loved the other Dragon Age games and I anticipate enjoying Veilguard BECAUSE of its changes. Sure, there are going to be issues and things that some people don't like, but that's the same for any game. It's been 10 years since the last Dragon Age game, so yeah, I'm hoping for something different and fresh.
I really only started watching your content about 3-4 months ago. But you quickly became one of the 1st people I click on for this stuff. You follow all the games i'm interested in and I think you really break it down thoughtfully.
Totally agree there. Half of a game's buyers just look at a trailer and nothing else, and after that terrible first look, a lot of people are gonna be turned off.
Although this is positive, a few reminders: 1. Highly curated playthrough. You only play the parts they want you to see. 2. Luke did the same for Star Wars : Outlaws. He was very positive. Then in his actual review his opinion changed since he saw all the other bits. 3. Curated choice and consequences is no guarantee. Always be suspicious if the effect of the choice is almost immediate, since that is not necessarily a branching story even if the effect is flashy. 4. Anything where a point is what someone said rather than directly seen in game, is suspect.
I am actually kind of worried why EA would try to be pro consumer unless the game is like 18 hours long. Why won't they even give a vague range of playtime? That is so odd in combination with EA reducing price.
@@TheOnceandFutureJake what does the games aesthetics have to do with the length of the video and it's time of release? Nothing of what is considered aesthetics is new or exclusively seen in this video.
The first trailer and name change was a big mistake. I also still don't like the character designs and art style, but I can get past that if the game has good writing, characters and story. The previews have eased some concerns and the game does sound like it could be good. Which I'm hoping its the case. I love the series and want this game to be better then my expectations.
Don't know if I'd say Bioware had a 'choice' when it came to the Frostbite engine. I remember articles about EA's higher ups 'strongly encouraging' their studios to use it, despite the fact it's a complicated engine better suited for FPS games (and Bioware is definitely known for their FPS titles). Glad to see the devs have managed to iron out those issues, but, lets be honest, EA kinda set Bioware up to fail prior to Veilguard.
Can't wait for this game. These suckers won't ruin my expectations and my experience with this game. People constantly hated dai but when i played it it became kne of my favorite games. You can suck it up
I just wanted Dreadwolf. I wanted to see what happened after Inquisition, and for them to further the story in a meaningful way. I'm sure I'll enjoy the fuck out of this one, regardless.
I've been so hesitant about the release of the game man, I REALLY want to play this and feel the same way about it that I did when I played Origins, DA2, and even Inquisition. Staying cautiously optimistic for now though, and will definitely be excited to see the reviews on release! Another great vid as always Luke, thanks!

I'm not a huge dragon age fan, but a HUGE Mass Effect fan and if this game goes sideways BioWare is done and there wouldn't be a ME5. Also happy for all the die hard DA fans who had to hold out for so long.
I am personally convinced this game will suck but I'm entirely willing to be proven wrong. I think that's what a lot of the detractors refuse to consider. They want the game to fail regardless of the actual quality of the game.
I'm sold. I despise how ALL the love interests are pansexual, but after Inquisition, I still trust Bioware. This video has won me over, as reluctant as I am to say this.
I relate lol. And I agree on the love interests - plus, I'm not a huge fan of the fact that all party members are romanceable. I liked how in previous games, companions had their own things going on, their own goals, their own lives. You can flirt with Aveline, but you're not the one for her, and she remarries during the game. You can flirt with Sera as a male character, but she'll turn you down, because she's a lesbian. Characters who can't be romanced, or characters whose romances are gated behind certain factors, helps them feel more "real" to me. Sad to see that going out the window to bow down to modern trends.
@@michalvoh lol that’s not true at all. And completely unfair. EA has never said all their games are for a modern audience. EVERY company was making games for a modern audience the past 6 years and things are changing.
@@Nagram_ BG3 was definitely not for the modern audience. The women and men were beautiful. The characters actually had backstories and strong personalities. All of the LGBTQ characters didn't make that their whole personality and had very detailed and thought out quest lines. It didn't feel like they were including them for brownie points. Heck the modern audience even tried to cancel it for some stupid reason or another but it failed.
This is very encouraging. Every iteration of Dragon Age has been vastly different in terms of style, setting or gameplay. It's the core of story, choice & character development that has always been it's biggest strength. If that remains intact I can put up with alot. Even...purple.
I really hope this does well for Bioware. I absolutely adore the DA franchise and Bioware! I cant see a world where Bioware isn't making games and so hopefully DA and the new ME games do well so they can keep making games we all love.
7 hours is a good chunk of time and shows confidence in what theyve made, while im still dissapointed in how limiting the ability choices are in combat this is the first time I've been interested in this game
The negativity around this game is crazy Do people just want a 1 to 1 remake of Origins or Inquisition? Games can and should change with each iteration. The tone does not need to stay the same all the time Game looks good in my opinion
But this doesnt even look like dragon age. If they released a trailer and didnt call it dragon age i wouldn't ever be able to tell this was suppose to be the sequel to inquistion
Well you kind of answered. your question people do want the 1 to 1 it seems... Now this game will be an good game probably, me I dont particularly like the art direction and the choice of going with a DA 2 blueprint like gameplay but it doesn't mean the game is shit for that. The issue is basically that most people didnt want them to go toward that. Truth is most people wanted Origin truth is this "new crew" has to prove itself with this game. It's unfair, it's life.
Damn, Luke is really starting to be very positive about games he gets early access to these days, hope this game is better than mediocre atleast. Wasn't he very positive about OutLaws too?
He said that "Some" parts were enjoyable, in the review he also put highlights on flaws. Oh and btw. He was positive about space marine 2. Or in that case, somehow he is right:0000 because nobody was angry about the game, so nobody had other opinions
Graphics look great, not a fan of the art style, enemy designs and combat looks meh. I am not sold on this one, definitely gonna be a "wait and see" for me.
Yeah, visually the game looks fantastic, but its art design, especially for the characters, just feels so so weird. They look kinda blurry? Too smooth, and the qunari have "evolved" again to a new design lmao
reminder : its Bioware in name only now the people that made those IPs so strong aren't there anymore this game is DoA to anyone that wanted DA to return to form tone, visuals, romance, customization, gameplay - so many warning signs already
Cool. This preview has changed my mind, instead of completely dismissing it, I will now take some time to watch reviews when the game launches. And that’s it. I’m not preordering it or getting hyped in the slightest.
Well its because when the video first released the comments were mostly about that, now as more and more people watch the logical comments tend to get more likes and go up. And if you want to search for the hate you dont have to get far onto the comments there are still easy to find. Even if you dont want to scrool down search the comment thread on every top comment and you ll see them.
