Check out my Gothic 2 review here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lKjOXmSUHRU.html When looking for mods to get the game in a playable state I tried out a couple of mods. After that I did a clean reinstall of the game to make it vanilla again, or so I thought.... It seems the Riisis Gothic 1 TextureMix V1.1 did not get uninstalled. This is the reason why the game's textures look slightly different. This was not my intention but alas, the video is already done. I didn't notice this because I had no reference on what the game should've looked like. Oh well, it is what it is!
Don't beat yourself up about it. Its just some textures and you still showed your true experience and that is what matters. Thank you for this video :)
@@JeditteeI'm playing it at the moment. But i would say he should play Gothic 2 before that. This mod is just so big and it helps to play Gothic 2 to get more and more into it.
Sooooo......maybe reviewing "Gothic 2" next? Highly recommend to check out the Sequel. It's probably the Best of the whole Gothic-Trilogy. And it's from 2002.
It's a bit sad, though. I hope the remake will introduce Gothic to a wider audience, because I think Gothic still has a lot of lessons to teach about game design, even some which are mostly not mentioned by reviews.
@@janjunek1216 as a huge fan and lots of playthrough with G1 and G2 I was surprised archolos really give so much new stuff but keeps the lore and graphic untouched
@@julianc691For me on Windows 10,Ryzen 7 2700x,16GB ram on 3000mhz,RTX3050 i needed no patch on steam. Just don't skip cutscenes. Whole pc freezes if you do. There's only 4-5 of them in the whole gothic 1
Yes, there are many exceptionally good games that are made like gothic even nowadays. It happens that you didn't search well enough among all the junk in nowadays oversaturated market. Do not rely on the "top 10 RPG games" kind of websites though.
@@SarumanBang there aren't any with gothic progression style and 3rd person camera. There are good rpg's out there (Baldur's Gate 3, Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077 etc.) but none in the style of gothic.
Gothic 2 is a lot better WITHOUT the addon. Night of the Raven messes up the pacing of the game completely and leads to a lot less coherent experience overall. I recommend playing through the addon version only AFTER completing G2 vanilla.
@@traktorholik NotR isn't really that much more difficult once you know what you're doing, and before you know what you're doing it's kinda tedious. For new players I 100% recommend playing through the game without the addon at least once before going for NotR. Also, vanilla is a more cohesive experience. Jharkendar, as great as it is, breaks the flow of the main game really badly and makes the experience feel a lot more broken, wonky and overall less satisfying. Also, vanilla is plenty challenging for noobs.
@@nicolasmayer618 imho g3 is quite underrated :D don't get me wrong, it's still much worse than the opus magnum of this series - gothic 2, but still i find it very interesting and quite innovative like for example releasing cities from orcs/assasins, though quite badly implemented (many bugs, no follow up to the whole revolution), it was exciting to change the landscape of the whole ecosystem there, like your actions and decisions made a huge impact on how the world looks in the end, not just being a anonymous hero who fights in the shadow with some evil, while everything around looks untouched by the crisis
Worth mentioning that the German voice acting (thr games original language) is absolutely phenomenal. It has a truly legendary status to this day. German gamers still reference and quote Gothic frequently.
It's a summer time game for me. it's one of the few games I've lost time in. When I was in High school I was playing Gothic 3. One minute it was 6:30 and I got done eating dinner the next it was 2 in the morning and I had no idea. My parents had gone to bed and I was in a moving time pocket. lol
aye aye brother, can't be a year without a Gothic 1 & 2 playthrough for me. Last year I talked in my brother-in-law to give these games a try since he always heard about 'em and wanted to give 'em a shot. My man took 27 minutes to figure out how to pick up an item :^) But the controls of these games (arrow keys + CTRL) is like second nature to me. Even with community patches and all sorts of control enhancements there are, I can't but play keyboard only. PS: it's literally 3 days since I finished Gothic 1 this year, gon' give it some time and hop onto Gothic 2 which this year I'm gonna play with the mod Returnings which I gave a shot couple years back, but from what I've heard the newer version 2.0 is much less frustrating and tons of bullshit elements are gone, so hey, might as well give it a shot and if it's gon' be bad? I can always start a new game on a regular version innit?
You need to try the best mod for gothic which is: Chronicles Of Myrtana Archolos, this is much bigger and larger projekt than G1 and for sure you will love it so much. Greetings from Poland
I remember bringing my PC to a friend with the plan of playing Counterstrike. Then I installed Gothic. In couple hours, we were both playing Gothic side by side, not caring about Counterstrike xD That was some 22 years ago. I feel old.
I grew up in Romania,Eastern Europe. Gothic was first introduced to me in 2004,getting the game on a magazine of computer enthusiasts (Level) when I was around 12. It made a significant impact on me and still is a big part of my childhood. To this day,(I am 31) I can still remember the map and know all the paths of the Colony
@@julianc691 hah, Level was originally a Czech magazine (and btw it is still coming out 29 years after it started, I have it subscribed), cool to see fellow reader of the romanian branch of it.
Mod support is a big one for me. Especially when it comes to Gothic 2, there are just so many awesome mods out there that range from changing small aspects of the game to being total conversions.
Just in case, since many new players don't know this (and even many old ones), but you can dodge in the game (with i-frames) by holding ALT and pressing back (S or Arrow down key). Please note that the animation looks the same if you only press S, but that one doesn't have i-frames XD. Also if you installed Union you can change the controls to Gothic 2 controls in the ini, which allows you to use only 1 click actions to do everything except attacking in combat. Ah and the voice acting is actually famous for how good it is in polish or german, it's just the english one that's bad HAHA.
I think for the english version of the game, it wasn't taken very seriously to begin with, and indie marketing wasn't where it is today. I mean, who would put big money into localizing the first project of a small german studio? Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy imo. Hopefully, the remake can do right by the original
It's Khor i nis, not Khor o nis! And yes, I saw your pinned comment about the armor, but I'd suggest you replay the game with the original armor. They are amazing! And thank you for your video, it is enlightening! I love it when new players discover Gothic!
Thanks for the correction! I'll probably revisit the game sometime in the future and I'll make sure there are no texture mods installed. And thank you for commenting :)
Truly the best gaming experience I've had in my life. When I was 12 I was playing it simultaneously with my cousin. We constantly discussed our progress, discussed what to do next, what camp is the best, even visited each other daily to watch each other playing this amazing game at that age as youngsters. I remember it like it was yesterday, 20 years after.
Gothic is great. I remember how awkward the controls felt, but with an hour playing it, it just became natural to me. I really like how simple and intuitive everything becomes after a while. It's not the type of game to make you confused about systems, but it gives you what you need and let you try things on your own. Now play Gothic 2 (the best) and Risen 1(weakest of the 3 but still good). You won't regret it. Anyway, after a GUN and a Gothic video, i had to subscribe. Good luck to you.
I played Gothic 2 first, and Gothic 1 much later. I still have great memories from trying that game (g1) for the first time, but for me it doesn't come near the level of enjoyment that I had with Gothic 2. I loved the variety in environments, and the game felt much less depressing than Gothic 1, which in the long run is a welcome change. I hope you will give that game a chance as well :) , Sincerely, a fellow Dutch Gothic fan
Very few gaming communities have such a following as the Gothic series. How many games can get so many devs that craft mods the span of fully fledged games for free? For a 20+ year old game?
gothic 2 to this day is my favourite game. there is nohing comparable to this franchise in terms of open world design. everyone who makes games in this genre should study it.
I would like to mention 1 important aspect, that you've not mentioned and is a common issue in many modern games. The fact, that you will not hoard things, spells or items, because every spell, every item can be of a use, either for a certain type of enemy or scenario or just directly sold. Also the weapon types are importantas well, because you clearly do more dmg to a golem with a mace, than with a sword. I think the fact, that they tought of this back in 2001 is amazing - a hardcore Gothic 1&2 fan!
Early 2000's and being a teenager. I still cherish dearly memories of Gothic 1 and 2, heck even of Gothic 3. Gothic 1 really was special for that time period, even though a bit clunky but had great environment, atmosphere, soundtrack and lvling/skill system. Miss the good old (simpler) days.
Nothing gives me such a strong feelings of nostalgia than this game, besides the lord of the rings (books and movies). I was a young teenager when i played it and i never played it trough for quiet a long time, when i did, i had this empty feeling of not knowing what to do with my life. Every day i got on the bus to school, my friends and i discussed what we found out. No game ever was so immersive afterwards... we are in our early 30's and we still use the inside jokes and references of gothic dialogues! Please tell me I'm not alone with my nostalgia!
I love this game so much I can´t even describe it. The real joy is in multiple playthroughs. Everyone who got emerced in this game will understand and is blessed actually.
When i got Gothic 1 i was 14 years old. tried to play it, but did not know how to pick up any stuff. so i quiet. my cousin came by and ask me what games i have and saw Gothic 1 and played it. I saw him picking up something and let me tell how he did it. i pushed him away and started playing. months later, after my 6th playthrough, i dreamd about the game and had feelingd toward it like i was in love.
I cried when i finished gothic 1... i was a kid at that time. Oh man the feelings i got playing this game. Also gothic 2 notr.. my god these 2 are absolute masterpieces. They deserve a remake with extended gameplay
Back in 2002 when I first played this I was blow away and so excited to see where these kind of RPGs will go in next 10-20 years. Sadly I don't think so anymore.
Great job on the video, really enjoyed your use of in-engine free cam shots! P.S. The switch ports of G1 and G2 have a redisigned inventory UI, which is a lot more intuitive. It's a shame that THQ Nordic didn't add it to the PC version.
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to fly around the map and capture all the little details. Ah those quality of life features would be most welcome for sure!
It's not hard to add the advanced inventory mod to both Gothic games now especially if you have it on steam where you can use workshop. It's basically the same thing as the Switch inventory.
Welcome to the beautiful and amazing world of Gothic, these 2 games are my favorite games of all time and i love them deeply. Its such a joy to find out that people are trying these games for the first time today, they are UNIQUE experiences worth it all the way
I love that people are still playing this game and talking about it. If you liked Gothic 1, I bet you'll like Gothic 2 as well. I recommend playing it without the expansion the first time around, then with, and then if you want even more playing it with the L'Hiver mod. The reason I wouldn't start with those add-ons is because they can be overwhelming and quite dramatically increase the difficulty.
Gothic is my favorite game and your review is very good and accurate, excellent content and I hope you can play gothic 2 and Archolos chronicles of myrtana
Fajnie, że zagrałeś w taki kultowy polski tytuł. Polska wyprodukowała jeszcze 3 części (Gothic 2, Gothic 2 Noc Kruka, Gothic 3, ale Zmierzch Bogów i Arcania to już niemieckie gry). Polskie pozdro! EDIT: A i taki wąsaty polsko-rumuńskii frajer kradnie Ci materiały, to mu możesz copy-strike'a zgłosić szefie!
He did mention me in the description, so it's fine. Sadly there were no subtitles so I couldn't understand most of what he was saying. And yeah, I will definitely try Gothic 2 and it's mods 👌🏼👌🏼
As a long time player I love to see new reviews, especially from first time players. Question for you, do you think you'll keep replaying it in the future or was it one-off adventure?
I think I'll revisit it in a couple of years, go with another faction and focus on another build maybe. We'll see! I'll probably give Gothic 2 a shot before that though. Thanks for watching :)
I get goosebumps everytime talks about gothic. Can't tell you all in words how much I love this game. Especially the music ambiance and story. Definitely I'm gonna subscribe to you. This is a very good and informative review for new players.
after you finish Gothic 2 I highly recommend Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos. Fan mod of size of a new game, professional polish voice overs (it sounds unlikely but you'll get used to it very quickly). Piranha bytes themselves watched and supported the mod creation. It takes the best from the gothic series and enhances it a lot.
I wish I was in your position, having only played Gothic once! The game has replayability as long as you haven´t done all factions. Once you have tried all factions multiple times (like me), you only go back for nostalgia hahaha. Although I love to play through the whole saga once in a while. I can only recommend you play Gothic 2 and Gothic 3, as well as Risen and the Gothic fan-made mod ''Chronicles of Myrtana''. All of these games just hold special memories in us hardcore fans. I wasn´t even born when Gothic 2 came out, and still here I am, subscribing to a YT channel because he made a review of my favourite game. Thanks for this, I hope you enjoy the other titles I mentioned. It´s the best time to be a new Gothic fan, with the upcoming Remake and everything. Cheers.
There is one thing worth mentioning regarding "undeveloped" story. Apperently team working on gothic has a lot of ideas about "main story" of the game and so lots of actual story was prepared and executed in like last 4 months of production
Somehow I always find myself smiling when I see somebody experience Gothic for the first time. Like Bullit would say: "Willkommen im Lager!" As you said, it's a little rough around the edges, where you can see its age. And, of course, Piranha Bytes back then were just bunch of folks with very little experience, always too little time towards the finish line, but a good concept and a strong passion for many things that would make their game such a gem even through today. Oh, and even though you might not take it as a compliment, I really like your accent :)
Thanks for the thoughtful comment, I appreciate that :) And thanks, I don't really have a strong opinion on my Dutch accent. Glad someone enjoys it haha!
I played Gothic for the 1st time around 2012 or 2013. I played through it, and I thought it was great. It made me want to play the other Gothic games, then the Risen series, and then the Elex series. Some games are better than others (I did not beat all of them), but overall they're great, and I became a fan of Piranha Bytes. RIP Piranha Bytes.
Man this makes me want to play the new one, I REALLY hope they keep all the stuff that made it unique and just make it play and look great for a modern game!
Thank you so much for playing our POLISH game :) Its so awesome to see even after 20+ years, new players visits old grandpa Gothic. There is a loooot to talk about, but only i can just write some comment, way too long. The best thing is the freedom that u have in gothic. Do whatever, go where do you want but game will show you that you are too newbie to go there etc. No markers and shit, game doesnt takes you by your hand, this is what i hate about new games, markers, lines on the ground etc. Let the players think and listen to NPCs that will tell you what to do, where to go, give a hint. No skipping dialogs just to speed run a game, go where the marker is. Do your thing, take a quest from whatever. You can immerse with the character that you are in new place, you dont know no one, trying figuring out shit as it goes by your own and how to escape that place. There is much more. Try gothic 2 night of the raven if you didnt already And our POLISH crazy fan mod, its huge, trush. The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos
Really interesting, well done and fair comment on the Game. Always love hearing someone displaying his opinion about the first time in Gothic! Im pretty sure youre gonna enjoy Gothic 2 as well. Greetings from Germany.
Nostalgia (for simpler times) Any chance you might cover Gothic II Night of The Raven & the spiritual successor of the OG Gothic titles: The Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos? PS Puik werk kerel.
Gothic, Elex, The Elder Scrolls. Great RPGs with worlds to explore and factions to join. Games that maul you in the beginning as you learn the ways of those games. I love that stuff.
God i love that game. First time i played it i was young, barely knew English and had a PC so bad i needed to turn the music off, so the game would stutter a bit less. Still loved every minute of it. Now i replay it every couple of years. Its very nostalgic for me.
Something nobody talks about Cdp was Polish publisher of gothic before they went into game development, and brought them popularity in country, cause their version was just that good
Welcome to the club brother, for Gomez! Surely you have heard by now, that Part 2 improved everything gameplay-wise. The greatest piece of Gothic still lies ahead of you.
Enderal is a german total conversion mod for Skyrim that also has alot of Gothic elements, especially the region based enemy difficulty (it comes with a very good english voice cast too, its very easy to install on Steam, you dont have to download anything anywhere else. I would take the "Special Edition" Version of Skyrim for a more stable version)
i always have to wonder, if this is might be the most atmospheric game ever made. from background story, gameplay, characters, sound to intelligent enemy placement... it all comes together, to create a feeling that only a few games can just get close to! ligthning in a bottle!
Can't wait for the realization that in Gothic 2 there are multiple ways to enter the first major city (I won't spoil and say how many, but it sets the tone about how well designed the game actually is).
Bro I just finished Gothic first time as well a week ago and you video came up on my main yt page, I always bounced off when I was younger. I wanted to finally play it through after so many years, cause everyone was praising it and I had enough of most of modern gaming these days. After completing it I had the same conclusions as you with better first half and lot of junk, but all around was worth while, I also see why it is a classic, it's much better to have smaller map with denser activities than big open world with empty spaces, soon gonna play gothic 2 which is said to be even better.
Gothic 2 fixes a lot of annoyances and shortcomings of the 1st game. It's my most replayed game ever. Archolos is a masterpiece too, I hope it gets an english voice dub at some point, absolutely deserves it.
Awesome video! Gothic is my alltime favorite, I replay is ever 1-2 years. You should try Gothic 2 with the night of the raven addon, it's even better than the first part.
It's a game with soul. It reminds me of Dark Souls. Both have in common, that they take the player seriously and are unforgiving like a punch in the face. Raw and authentic.
The good thing is, you don't have to play with the vanilla controls or the vanilla inventory if you don't want to. There are mods to port the inventory and controls from Gothic 2. I would share my game with you (which i managed to get perfectly preconfigured), but sadly it's in Spanish. I show it briefly in my channel. I recommend you play Gothic 2 + its expansion, it's even better than Gothic 1 and TBH the best game i've ever played. Next is Chronicles of Myrtana, an addon for Gothic 2 made by the community, which is a completely new game in itself.
You can become quite OP before even joining any camps. You just gotta level up strenght stat to 50, at least learn to hold a one handed in one hand, beat the ever living shit out of a bartender via trial and error (spam A and D until he falls from some 26-30 damage mace) in the New Camp and steal his axe with a wonderful 55 damage. (+ Cheese your way into the main parts of the old Camp to lockpick out of Barons' chests some fancy amulets and protecton rings + buy pants from Fisk in the Old Camp (you can steal that ore back by knocking the lights out of him. Then you can also abuse that mechanic over and over (just a bit) to get a shit ton of these pants and sell them for much better loot. After that, you'll have to worry for a while about Orks with their hounds, black Goblins, Snappers, Skeletons and Fire Lizards (these are the absolute No-No without propper fire resist stats)
wonderful review! Also I suggest you trying the total conversion mod Chronicles of Archolos...some find it even better than Gothic 1 and 2 and it actually released pretty recently (if 2021 can be considered recently lol)
Hey! Great job with the video. I've been playing this game since 2008 and I'm glad to see that people are open to try Gothic even after so many years. You pointed really well both the strengths and the faults of the game. Let's hope the faults will be addressed in the upcoming remake. Cheers and welcome to the colony!
I think it's great how innovative this game was at the time. It had a lot ahead of many games and that of a small developer studio. But I also have to say that the German synchronization is much better. For me, in any case, it is an absolute nostalgic game from my childhood. And I can only recommend you to play Gothic 2 with the addon night of Raven.
Man, Gothic series is a living legend in Poland. Also, because of its incredible dubbing. Thinking about Vesemir. I wouldn't be surprised if CDPR chose William Roberts because of his role in Gothic. But, it's probably just a coincidence because everyone played Gothic in Polish.
Gothic 1 is a masterpiece, but Gothic 2 with DLC Night of The Raven... is on a whole new level. You should try it. Greetings from Poland 🇵🇱, where Gothic is probably the most iconic, well known and admired game. No other country has this huge fanbase.
EA, Ubisoft, and CD Projekt Red should play Gothic 2 to learn so much that will make their games so much better! Gothic 2 used many unique mechanics that made its world so believable, lively, and interesting - you've already mentioned a few of them in the video.
Gothic lover for almost 20 years here: Fighting is awesome and took me about 6 years to realize how to play it. Then it becomes ahead of its time tbh:D
I love watching modern takes on Gothic. When it released in 2001, it was groundbreaking, an absolute machine melter. I played it for the first time at the age of 11, in 2005, and was completely overwhelmed with the controls and scared to make my way alone to the Old Camp - I had to follow Diego and let him take out the young Scavenger that would block your path about halfway down the mountain. At some point I'd figure out the action key system, but it would take me another two years before I finally played through the entire thing. It was awesome. This game made me a gamer. Will you have a look at Gothic 2 as well? I haven an inkling you may enjoy it a teeny tiny bit :)
All of pirrana bites games are very similar. I got Risen very cheap years and loved it so much I got the series with dlc's. Found the Gothic series this year at a huge discount and bought all of them. The fighting was similar to Risen, so I learned qucikly.
if you are going to continue this series (which i highly recommend) don't forget to also check chronicles of myrtana it is a big mod takes place before gothic 1 it is so big that it is its own game and imo it is the best game out of the entire series yes a mod is better that the main games lol
The funny thing about this game - and Prianha bytes other games - is that there are only 2 types of enemies. The one you can kill with just 1 or 2 hits. And the ones who will kill you with just 1 or 2 hits. That way you always know wether or not you should be in a certain area at this time - or not.
