I Played MEWTWO For 1 Week! Does He Suck? 

I have been really wanting to see more mewtwo at high level play. His offensive kit is really strong which makes him really fun to watch.

Finally someone agrees with me on the low damage output... He had great damage output for early meta standards but nowadays every single character makes you go from 0 to 60 in one interaction and has some autopilot - character driven advantage state after that while Mewtwo feels like if you get the reads you get the same but with extra effort. Mewtwo is by no means a bad character but the standard of this game is so high that everything he does is just alright and this game benefits having 2/3 broken options instead of a consistent all around kit. Kinda sad

Great analysis, every point brought up makes a lot of sense; tail hurtbox definitely isn't his biggest flaw but I'd say it's still annoying, even though it's not gonna always get hit every single game, when it does it feels very frustrating and unfair to take damage or even die because the tail was randomly in the way. It's bad for his dashback (though slingshot can help) and prevents the tail moves from being great tools because there's always a risk of getting hit just because you threw it out (lol 0:52 ) About his tournament results, Remrin from Canada and TimPrater from the US are also doing good with Mewtwo, but it could be harder to get really high with him than other low-mid tiers (like DK) because of his consistency issues and lack of solid win condition (especially against characters that are hard to edgeguard)

I think Ike has gotten a pretty negative reputation in the last few years. I know hes a simple character and he tends towards this trajectory as Smash games evolve but I would love to see you go in depth on him with a week playing him.

Absolutely love seeing you explore other characters! I'm trying my best but I don't have that top level experience. I absolutely agree with everything you said about Mewtwo. His offense is incredible but you're right that if you want to be good with Mewtwo you need to have really good defensive play. The point about micro spacing is something I hadn't considered as much but definitely resonates with my experience of maining Mewtwo.

The more I look at both SSB4 and Ultimate Mewtwo footage, the more I realize how much his broken airdodge from SSB4 carried that character. That airdodge was, for the most part, a get-out-of-disadvantage free card. Without it, Mewtwo must now feel the full fury of being a tall + light + floaty character. SSB4 Mewtwo was an even lighter character with an even more floaty double jump, so imagine that version of the character without that airdodge.

Some details aside, I generally agree with your points or at least I understand where you're coming from. But we definitely disagree on Mewtwo's combo game / damage output, I personally don't think you give M2 enough credit in that area. Sure Mewtwo relies a lot on simple bread and butter 2 hit or 3 hit combos like Dtilt > Nair > Dash Attack, but those combos deal a solid bit of damage for what they are, more than 30% for this specific combo for example. If you replace dash attack with forward throw it's gonna be even more damage, closer to 40%. But under the right conditions M2 can extend these simple combos further. For example: against floatier characters you can confirm Nair into another Nair. So Dtilt > Nair > Nair > Fair for example will deal more than 40%. Against non-floatly characters you can implement an Up-Tilt. So you could do Dtilt > Nair > Up-Tilt > Nair > Fair for example and it's gonna deal almost 50%. So there's definitely room for Mewtwo to get more out of his combos. Although I'll admit some of those combos will be conditional. But I feel like you're overlooking Mewtwo's best neutral tool, which is also his best combo starter: Shadow Ball. You mentioned footstool combos and that they are very specific, and you might be right with that. But Mewtwo can combo Shadow Ball into literally anything, not just footstool, including his more prominent combo starters like Dtilt, Up Tilt or Nair, which usually are way simpler, safer and overall more accessible than footstool, and yet they yield almost as good rewards. (I'm not downplaying footstool combos btw, they're amazing. I'm just trying to highlight the plethora of combo routes Mewtwo has available). Fully or almost fully charged Shadow Ball > Dtilt > idj Up Air > Fair will deal close to 70%. Against floaties you can do Fully charged Shadow Ball > drag down Nair > Dtilt > Fair/Bair and it's gonna deal 60%. You can also do: quarter or half charged Shadow ball > Dtilt > drag down Nair > Dtilt > Fair/Bair and it's gonna deal around 55-60% Etc. Etc If you know what you're doing and you hit your opponent with a Shadow Ball, your opponent will take at least 50% damage at low percents. That's what M2 is capable of, if optimized. And that's without platform extensions. I think Mewtwo definitely has high tier combos / damage output, maybe not top tier, but definitely high tier.

Yeah i think this mostly summarises why it can switch from great to suddenly crap as mewtwo. At mid level nothing matters but when your double jump is that slow it is hilariously easy to get frame trapped since your options are basically limited to mash or airdodge, and since your moves are not that fast or disjointed air dodge is probably always better and any mildly awake player will know it, and can juggle you pretty easily. Another thing that feels awful after enough time is his fast fall speed not moving fast enough to allow for tomahawk grabs or for fast fall Airdodge to really be an option in disadvantage. Some buff ideas he really could use are: •frame 5 nair •faster jump + dbjump speed •reduce hurtbox on feet •faster teleport, less lagg on teleport •tail intangibility on moves like rolls, tilts, and back air. (Getting spiked from onstage behind your opponent while rolling from ledge is hell). Any 3 of these changes and ge goes up 2 tiers.

Happy that you might explore Young Link next. He's one of the best zoners and great setup tools. Only downside is its hard to get kills and stock confirms.

Hey Esam if you do this again I'd love to see you try Toon Link. I think he's such an underrated character and no one really seems to play him except for Lv. 1, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on him.

Robin next or soon, please! I honestly mostly want to see someone with such a good understanding of combos lab bronze sword into spells/levin sword so I can steal the ideas, tbh. I'd also love to see if someone who can footstool out of shield consistently finds footstool up-b useful at all

I feel there are a few points you made about Mewtwo aren’t entirely accurate especially the comment about having small combos and not having lots of combo moves. I agree with most other points though for sure and I think you summarized the character well.

Great analysis for such a short time with the character! Id like to see you do this with lucas next, I feel like the amount of buttons you can press with him might fit you pretty well!

I still think you should watch some notbae content to see the stuff m2 can do. A lot of his potential comes to knowing these options.

He's a big body but he has some tricks. Teleport to get a better position if you're trapped in the corner. Disable has armor start-up. If you up-tilt while crouching it comes out at the initial height. You can crouch up-tilt to catch people jumping in with ariels.

Mewtwo is a bit sad because on paper he's so strong and has every tool you'd want. But when you get hit it feels so bad lol. He's a very unfortunate character.

Mewtwo is accually much better than most people think he is. He has a ridiculous movesett. Very good and strong smash attacks. Forward air, nair a good damage tool. Solid recovery, not to mention a very strong final smash that is also pretty easy to hit. Sure he is light and tail hurtbox but that really does not matter.

He does not suck if you know what you're doing with him.
