Itzhak Perlman tells us how he acquired his famous Stradivarius.
Watch the full talk here: • Itzhak Perlman in Conv...
If there’s anyone who personifies the resilience, the vision and the contribution of the Jewish people, it’s Itzhak Perlman, whose transcendent violin playing evokes the depth of the human experience.
And the moving new documentary Itzhak, which premiered as part of the American Masters series in October on THIRTEEN, sheds fresh light on Perlman’s personal struggles as a polio survivor and Jewish émigré, reminding us why art is so vital to life. Don’t miss the master in person when he joins acclaimed actor and writer Alan Alda for a conversation on his life and work, touching on the fascinating similarities and differences between performing music and acting.

He’s one of the last violinists of his generation to actually own his Stradivarius. There are few exceptions amongst concert violinists today but most concert violinists can’t afford to own a famous priceless Italian violin!

I've been fortunate to have heard Itzhak play his Stradivarius, and it was worth working for 30 years to pay it off. All my experience as a guitar player/collector meant NOTHING - I didn't know what to listen for; but the girl who took me was excited, and bubbled, "and he's got his Stradivarius!" I knew that those were famous violins, so I said, "Uh, good." It DID have an especially "tasty" tone(impossible to describe; I thought it was louder, or(more poetically) that the violin "emitted" more sound(like as if more sound wanted to come from it).

Perlman can make a cigar box sound like a Stradivarius. He certainly deserves a great instrument, but the rest of us can obtain an equally wonderful instrument from the many great violin makers living today without paying a fortune.

i seriously doubt it. a crapy violin would sound crap no matter who plays.

@@carpetbrown1115 Any mediocre instrument is very difficult to play .A well made instrument has to be 'easy' to play ; and it's got to sound good to the player .The 'specifics' are developed by the luthier . No one plays East European dance tunes ( Dvorscak ) better than he ( Pearlman , of course ).
@carpetbrown1115
@carpetbrown1115 2 года назад
@@SWHBOYCE i agree, but you got to give credit where it is due as well. sure pearlman makes the violin sing. but in the hands of another good player, that voilin would sound pretty good as well. i believe a good voilin would sound good in the hands of a competent player regardless of what strings or bow is used.

I heard that those who make violins as a hobby, some of them put in such great effort that the resulting instruments rivel the best (with the exception of the world famous authentic Stradivarius which are linked to the special wood grown in that region at that time of manufacture which makes the most beautiful sound). Hobby builders sell their work at good deals sometimes if they are willing to part with it. Luthiers bent on money will not necessary put in the same care and want as much money as they can get.

Wonderful story - wow, he was patient! Btw, does anyone know which violin he played on before then? There are too many great Perlman recordings ro list but his 1972 one of the Carmen Fantasy sounds so vibrant and rich. He makes the violin talk but the violin has the variety and depth to allow it. I'm wondering which one it is. . .🤔

I am 13. I look at his videos for inspiration, and I constantly keep listening to him before every violin competition, or recital. He is my inspiration. He is the reason I love my violin so much. I can play the notes almost perfectly. I have perfect pitch, and reasonably good intonation too. But, I cannot make any violin, or any note sound like him. I just don’t get it. He must be God of violin 🙏

you can buy an awesome modern fiddle for a tiny fraction of what a strad or del gesu or another exotic italian fiddle is going for. i wouldn't go into hock for the rest of my life just to get a fiddle that's marginally better, and no one listening can even tell the difference anyway.
@aritronow
@aritronow 3 года назад
Depends on who you are and hence, the value you attach to your fiddle

It has been scientifically proved by double-blinded study (Claudia Fritz et al. PNAS, 2017, 114(21), 5395-5400) that neither listener nor the soloist could distinguish the Strad/Guarneri from some modern fine violins. So, it is baseless to claim that these old Italian violins are always vocally superior. However, in his Masterclass (www.masterclass.com), Mr. Perlman said the reason to play on a fine instrument is pretty much psychological: the sound from the instrument inspires himself to be creative. Well, if the function of an instrument is heavily psychology involved, probably the price-tag or the rareness of these instruments all play a non-nonsense part too…

Do you have any idea how much he's made off that investment? It's in the millions.
@Ember_Prime

The difference is the tone and sound quality. Stradivarius, Gournari, and Guadagnini violins have very specific qualities to their sound that modern violins can attempt to replicate but just can’t quite copy. There’s also a very limited number of those instruments, hence the insane price.
