Might be intriguing to see some chronograph testing if you have another barrel for the P10F, and access to the chronograph…
@dltz
@dltz 4 месяца назад
I have an extra P-10 barrel but it is extended and threaded, so that wouldn't be a direct comparison as the barrel length is different. I would have liked to do chronograph testing but don't have one and don't want to buy one lol.

Nice work on your porting and your detailed engineering are great . The only thing about porting a carry gun is shooting at retention and possible getting shrapnel to the face .I watch a vid of someone test a ported gun with shooting it with cardboard over it around 2 feet away and it did have a lot of indents in the cardboard . What is your take on that ? Thanks
@dltz
@dltz 4 месяца назад
Somthing to consider for sure. These ports are loud and concussive. Some fast moving particulate coming out of them. I wouldn't call it shrapnel. It would be obnoxious to shoot from retention thats for sure, but two things that immediately come to mind: 1. if I have someone trying to kill me I don't care at all about a little powder burn or extra noise, i got bigger problems. 2. if I have to shoot from retention at a threat I have seriously misjudged a situation and have not been paying attention. Its not out of the realm of possiblity, crazy shit can happen, but I feel the chances of having to defend myself are low, and shooting at a threat from retention are even lower. So it kinda comes down to a SUPER unlikely case, and if it does happen, refer to point one.

I guess running a fiber optic front would be a moot point because of how much gas and heat gets ejected and would quickly get burned.
@dltz
@dltz 4 месяца назад
Haha yes indeed. Would melt out of there pretty quick. That's where V-shaped ports on either side of the muzzle would be best.

Nice work, very clean. Good info. THANKS. any chance of slide hole size dimensions and barrel holes? BTW are the holes in the barrel straight through or V cut style notched? Using a v style bit or a flat milling style bit, is there any possible advantage to the V cut? Smaller to larger opening, creating less pressure for faster escape (think reverse nozzle)
@dltz
@dltz 2 месяца назад
Fully dimensioned drawing here: imgur.com/a/inline-barrel-port-dimensions-xvjDEul Edited: I will note that as I have ported more barrels and done more testing, I don't like any hole bigger than .125" diameter (to reduce spalling). The holes in this guns barrel are 5/32". Smaller diameter holes means more are needed to get the same cross sectional area. Holes are straight walled, made with a standard drill bit. I thought a lot about tapering the holes as well. Basic fluid mechanics of incompressible subsonic flow would show that velocity would increase if the hole diameter started large, then got smaller. Just like a nozzle, converging nozzle increases fluid velocity, diverging nozzle decreases fluid velocity (this is based on constant mass flow rate and density: mass flow = density*cross sectional area*velocity). Fluid velocity would contribute more to the energy the ports have to push the muzzle down as energy is proportional to velocity squared (but linearly proportional to mass). However this is not incompressible subsonic flow. This is compressible, supersonic flow, and it gets a lot more messy. I will link to a great video (its old but gold) about compressible supersonic channel flow. I think you're right tho, with supersonic compressible flow, a reverse nozzle reduces turbulence at the exit opening and that helps scavenge the gas out and increase its velocity. (This video is part of an awesome fluid mechanics series): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JhlEkEk7igs.html I really go into the weeds researching this before porting any barrels I tell you what. There is no way I could optimize port layout without computational fluid dynamics simulations and having multiple barrels ported in multiple arrangements for one single gun, that I could test and gather a large body of data. I think to answer your question...(again i dont know for sure) but a taper angle on the holes of no more that 30 degrees off the vertical (60 degree included angle) that diverges from the bore, would increase gas velocity and presumably performance. Smaller holes should increase gas velocity over larger ones too. If i wanted to spend more money on tooling, and more time on machining... i would probably have the opening to the bore be 3/32" (.094") diameter, and bore it using a tapered endmill with less than a 60 degree included angle(

Pretty cool but definitely not necessary. I completely disagree on the P01 being snappy. It’s a very soft and flat shooting pistol out of the box.

Love the Lok grips, always great quality and feel. I wish I went with something more aggressive, these dont scratch up my belly or anything but they don't add much grip at all. I think I should have gone with the Ridgeback texture for the application of this gun.

hey did the bushing was hurt or needed to be modified ? accuracy lose? I own p01 just like this but previous owner did v style port 3 on each side and the bushing and slide had to be milled as well can I contact you and send you some pictures in this regard with measurement. the accuracy of my pistol was hurt in an unbelievable way
@dltz
@dltz 16 дней назад
I positioned the slot in the slide completely behind the barrel bushing. I didn't want to have to machine the barrel bushing should I ever need to install another one. The barrel lock up contact area is maybe the front 1/3rd of the bushing so machining a littlebit of material off the back of the bushing shouldn't affect accuracy. With all my milling jobs I make sure to stay away from the barrel bushing lock up issues to avoid accuracy issues. The holes drilled in the barrel need to be deburred properly as well or they can shave material off the bullet and destabilize it. Also, I have found that bigger holes affect the bullet more as it passes and can lead to accuracy issues and point of impact shift. I didn't experience any change in accuracy of the pistol that I could tell after porting the barrel. My point of impact shifted about an inch at 15 yards, but that has been the case with almost all the pistols I have ported. The groups didn't open up at all though. As for measurements, the slot in the top of my slide is just slightly behind the front sight. This makes it clear the rear of the barrel bushing. It sounds like maybe your V-ports are too far forward and into the barrel lock up area of the bushing.
@pazpaz4930
@pazpaz4930 16 дней назад
@@dltz awesome and detailed answer thank you. if you are curious I would love to send you some pictures for you to check
@dltz
@dltz 16 дней назад
@@pazpaz4930 Wont be able to tell much from pictures. I would need to take measurements. I just measured a factory barrel bushing. The lock up area extends in from the front of the bushing about .300". So measure from the front of the bushing (it sticks out the front of the slide a little) back to the holes in your slide. If its less than .300", your slots are probably into your barrel bushing and may be affecting the lock up area. Another possibility is that the machining loosened the bushing up in the slide. The bushing should not move in the slide at all. Check that too.
@pazpaz4930
@pazpaz4930 16 дней назад
@@dltz will be checked. from end of the barrel to end of the last port it 0.45 inch (1.15cm) the cuts on the side are 0.78inch and from end of slide cut to middle of front sight locking pin is 0.157 do you think new bushing will be hurt if it will cover some of the ports?
@dltz
@dltz 16 дней назад
@@pazpaz4930 Sounds like they are too far forward. I wouldn't cover any of the ports. That might shoot some gasses/spalling back at your face. I would look for a new barrel and bushing. Confirm that your bushing isn't loose in the slide too. If it is, unfortunetely, you may need a new slide to remedy the accuracy issues.

Which do think would’ve work better chunk port or the three hole port.
@dltz
@dltz 3 месяца назад
I dont like chunk ports after I did one on my Springfield Hellcat. I have a video about that experience on my channel. I dont think the design of this slide and barrel bushing would allow me to chunk port this in a way that is safe. To answer your question less cryptically, I think it's more about overall cross-sectional port area and port location. I'm not convinced there would be an appreciable difference in performance between this line of ports or a chunk port if they were sized abd located well. V ports dont direct gas straight up so some of the energy doesnt contribute to pushing the muzzle down so I would expect a wide angle V port to be less effective. Than a chunk port or these inline holes. But generally V ports can be pushed further forward and flank the front sight, giving them a better mechanical advantage. I dont know if any of that made sense. Getting into the details of port design, size, and layout can get really confusing really quick. Tldr: given comparable total cross-sectional port area and port location I bet the difference in performance between a chunk port and a vertical inline port would be negligible.
@darrylhart8152
