I Put $180 Pickups In A $70 Bass And This Happened!

My good friend Mike from Sonic Pickups sent me some of his hand made jazz bass pickups to be installed on the $70 Glarry J Bass I was given a few months ago. The pickups cost $180 but how much will they improve a bass that only costs $70?

For a beginner player, the upgraded pickups may be noticeable as simply sounding “better”. For more experienced players, the upgraded pickups will make all the difference in the enjoyment of a bargain price bass. Because I’ve demoed probably a thousand Jazz Basses over the decades, I know what each pickup is supposed to sound like, and those cheap stock pickups in the bargain basses do the job and sound in the very general ballpark like they’re supposed to sound, but they lack the punch, detail, body and the slightly 3 dimensional quality of good pickups. Also, stock pickups on a very cheap bass let down an instrument that may, despite the cheap price have a good acoustic resonance and snap. Good upgraded pickups allow those acoustic and resonant qualities come through an amp. Much more rewarding to play when the tone matches the resonance of the instrument, and that holds equally for the same phenomenon in guitars and cheap stock pickups versus upgraded pickups.

The stock pickups sound good but the new pickups sound like a veil has been removed resulting in a "clearer " and "expanded" sound.
@michaelbell75

I have this same bass and I actually like the stock pickups quite a bit. The new pickups do sound a bit more clear, but they also sound way brighter IMO. You can hear a lot of squeaky fret noise with them that wasn't present with the stock pickups. I prefer the deeper lows in the stock pickups. The stock pickups almost sound like a P bass to my ears. Besides, in a mix, you are never going to hear the subtle difference between the two anyways. I also own the Glarry P bass and although I really like it, it definitely needed a new pickup. It was possibly the thinnest and weakest sounding P pickup I have ever heard. The Glarry Jazz bass has a deeper, fuller sound than the P. So I dropped a Duncan SPB-3 Quarter Pound in it and its awesome now. I don't feel any need to upgrade the Jazz bass pickups but if I did, I would be going with the Quarter Pounds in that as well.

I think the new pickups have richer fuller sound with more sustain and power. But the old pickups are really pretty good.. I have a cheap no name bass and replaced one of the pickups and feel it is much more to my liking, although I had received compliments on the sound of the bass before I replaced the pickup. It did have a sort of charm to the sound but was a bit too weak.

The Sonics are clearly better. I know both sets of pickups are going through the same electronics, so it's a fair comparison, but I would appreciate knowing the values of the pots and cap in the Glarry. 250K pots versus 500K pots makes a big difference to the sound, as does the cap value. In fact, if I were looking to mod a cheap bass like this one, the first thing I would look at would be the pots and cap. You should be able to get a complete set of three pots plus a cap for less than $25, which compares rather well with $180 pickups. Choosing the right components here will also allow you to get the best from your high quality pickups, if you decide to go that route as well.

These things need way more than new pickups, the pbass necks are as thick as fence posts (who puts a PBass neck on a Jazz??), the saddles are never centered, the frets need a full leveling, the fret ends are like razors, the tuners are shite, no aftermarket pickguard will fit them right, the strings are bailing wire. The bridge is nice-ish, saddles are actually steel. But by the time you've "modded" everything, and God forbid you have to pay a luthier to do a fret level, you could have bought a nice Squier Classic Vibe with a good reputation.

youtube compresses the sound a lot so you'll never get the full tone of a swap.The top dollar pick ups deff. have more range in them and it'll be mostly noticeable in a band setting at how good they are. Swap out the cheap strings and pots / wiring with the $180 pickups and it'll a whole new beast.

Just did this in a J & D bass. So £125 surf green 75 Jazz bass upgraded to EMG J pickups - £122 - but comes with the pots etc. No need to shield - much beefier output. I make some comparison on a YT vid - when you listen back the difference (other than the noise from the stock pickups) is there but not as ear as in the room - not least you cannot feel the floor vibrating :-). High mass bridge on order to reduce neck dive. The body material is wood not plywood. Sure I could have got a Sire M2 for total cost BUT that isn't surf green :-).

It sounds like the difference between the tone of slightly mellowed older strings versus the zing of new, fresh strings. I'm not saying that's what it is. Could very well be the pickups - that's just what the tone difference reminds me of.

Roundwounds distract and make it sound brittle. ... I first thought there was a difference then, when I bounced back and forth, I found it's just slightly warmer sounding. (Which is what a good pickup should do. I hear that from Lollar's I don't hear that from Duncan's.) ... But, that may have more to do with the body material, which is probably mostly glue. ... Are those the original strings?

Just more proof that the tone in an electric bass is mostly the pickups and then strings and wood. Bottom line though, a good bassist will make a bad bass sound good. A bad bassist will make a good bass sound bad. Practice is more important than anything.

I like Jazz pickups to sound detailed enough in the highs, but hate them (or any pickup) to go all hi-fi on me, a Jazz bass isn't supposed to sound hi-fi at all (also I couldn't care less about "flatness" and similar snob crap, this is bass guitar, not the London Philharmonic). The Sonic pickup isn't that hi-fi, but it lacks a lo-mid bump the stock pickups seem to have. Sorry, in this case the upgrade's not worth it to me (nevermind how cheap the bass). Stock pickups sound surprisingly decent. Yet hardly a surprise, a pickup is a pretty simple device, it's really hard to make it too bad in modern times and it's not worth it to pay 5-10X the price for what's hardly a 10-20% increase in objective construction/materials quality. OTOH I totally understand expensive pickup upgrades BASED ON TONE PREFERENCE, if the Sonic pickups are the sound you're looking for they're perfectly justified, subjective personal taste is a good argument here in its own right, for sure (just be conscious the price you pay is because of that, not because they're 10 times better than a 18€ Jazz pickup set). BTW, I built this "rat rod" Jazz with the cheapest body & neck I could get from AliExpress and all other parts from a "salvage" bass I had bought for dirty cheap. Best Jazz Bass I've owned, one of the best sounding and playing I've tried (probably only surpassed by a MIJ/CIJ geddy Jazz). Pickups are a mistery, but most certainly cheap crap (they look real generic and probably are, salvage bass cost me 38€). They sound killer, wouldn't swap them for anything. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JHm19QEeDgk.html

I think that if you put the pickups in a better quality instrument that doesn’t use cheap laminated body wood or cheap electronics you would have a gigable bass. The body on those Glarry Basses are the weakest part of the bass imho. Even a squier affinity bass uses better non-laminated woods like mahogany or basswood. I wouldn’t be surprised if the bass fell apart after a few years of use, especially if it isn’t maintained properly.

I have their GIB 5 string version. I'm modding about everything on it. Just a fun project. Looking at EMG or Bartolini pups. Your guy really butchered your bass cavities. Not his fault? Absolutely his fault. Horrible job. Looks like he used a dremel by hand while drinking. I agree with some of the other comments, the stock pups aren't to bad except for hum. You can of course use shielding. Again, this is just a project for me. I think it is better to buy something that is nice enough to begin with. But if money is an issue, these are fine overall and can be upgraded over time to play and sound much better without a crazy amount of expense. The change of pups on this vid was noticeable, but doesn't necessarily seem worth the money for the small difference unless you just have the money to spend. Nice honest and informational vid dude.
