Jake I sold my c5 last October but I still get excited when you drop a video on yours. Great vid as usual, I think your channel is way under rated and is probably right on the verge of blowing up huge. Keep it up bud!
Awesome video!! Installing header's and an exhaust in your garage is a big job. I've installed a few exhausts and sets of header's over the years and I would recommend that you install a set of locking header bolts and not reuse the factory bolts. I'd also install a heat cover over the spark plug wires with the new header's. The only other thing that I would do differently is to add a set of high performance mufflers to help with back pressure. I've always seemed to lose power on my cars when I've tried to run a straight exhaust. It probably wouldn't hurt to Dyno the car with and without mufflers to see if it makes a difference. If you go with mufflers I would highly suggest a Borla S-Type system. It makes good power, isn't overly loud at idle and part throttle and has a fantastic exhaust note at wide open throttle. It's not overly loud but it's an aggressive, civilized exhaust note with a distinct sound. I was sold on Borla exhaust systems 20+ years ago when the guys that I knew who drove Vipers in the Vettes, Vipers & F-Body club wouldn't use any other exhaust on their Viper's except a Borla because of the exhaust note that it made. The older Viper's had a pretty bad sounding exhaust note from the factory (similar to a milk truck exhaust note) and the Viper owners I knew were fairly sensitive about this.
I ran short tube headers on my C5 for a couple years - I was told that long tube headers would be better for a quicker response. I'll freaking swear by my long tube headers and the straight pipe set up I have now. Performance, launch and overall fuel mileage is outstanding !!! Not to mention the SOUND !!! We (our corvette club ) does every parade within our two cities and I get Major Thumbs Up 👍 and Cheers from the crowds when I wrap the pipes up !! No one comes close to the pure sound of 560HP at 5000rpm. Have fun - keep tinkering !!!
Nice work! I enjoyed this video as well. I am, and have been, sort of up in the air regarding what headers to get for my '97. You already heavily steered me in the direction as far as exhaust goes- mine has a Billy Boat set up that sounds okay and looks cool, but that SLP is exactly the sound that I want, so I'll be looking at this particular brand. Did get black C6 Z06 wheels for what I thought was a good deal mounted up recently and just before it got "cold", I splurged on Z51 shocks and Steinjager front and rear sways as well as endlinks. Glad I did because I found out that a shock was blown and a link was busted- the car was all over the place when driving on uneven surfaces. Almost scary in a sense. So, finances willing, cold air, headers, exhaust and new tires next year! It's nice being able to watch other enthusiasts who document their upgrades via RU-vid. I talk about my car here because nobody else, save for a few friends, really knows or cares about what I am doing to my Corvette. Keep rocking the vids, man! 👍👍
That has to be by far, the most entertaining video you’ve done. All the friends laughing, the comments, and the “positions” you all were in 🤪 just made it a blast to watch. Well edited and the content was very informative. My Vert has a Corsa x-pipe on it and have been toying with a header install. I loved this video 👍🏻👍🏻 (that’s 2 thumbs up by the way) 🤣. Hope to meet up next spring/summer when I’m at the lake. Keep up the good work.
Like Kevin Robinson so graciously pointed out it appears I will be buying you a belt for Christmas….but seriously awesome video man, the vet looks and sounds amazing
I hope it’s got a big cowboy buckle on the front 😉 thank you Thimbus I’m gonna park outside your house in the middle of the night and rev it until you come outside
I got the speed engineering headers last year and unfortunately I could not run them as they sat about a 1.5" below the bottom of the car, glad yours worked out for you
Love your channel and content just this Thanksgiving weekend I put. Billy boat Bullet exhaust on mine, and its rippin loud! Holy crap i love it sounds like a nascar. Lol and I have the SLP headers as well I officially just put away for the season I live right next to you in Massachusetts
I am not sure if they are still around but when I had my C5, I used FLP headers and system. They had a section where you could install their high flow cats, or a straight pipe. I used to put the cats in for inspection and take them out for track days. It took about 10 minutes to do. I love that you try these things on your own. I am the same way. I can't wait to see you rebuild that LS1 when the time comes. ;)
Interesting. What were those ramps you used, and how did you get the car up on top of them? Planning to install my x pipe in a day or so, but don't think just jacking it up in the back will be enough
My poor 03 is sitting in the garage. Can't get her to stop overheating. I think it's just ait in the cooling system. Taking her in next week to a dealer. Luckily they are far. Yours is sounding great.
The air system will be turned off in hptuners when you tune it, it's just a checkbox, then removing the excess when you have the intake off whenever that is (also replace the oil pressure switch when intake is off). After seeing this i'm glad I got the Texas Speed headers, they were just bolt on, included the pipes you had to cut off and reuse, o2 extensions, gaskets etc. The short pipes on the back that goes under the trans are great location for cutouts as well, and just mark them, unbolt that short section, etc.
lol you were tripping not removing the coil packs removing the old manifolds, they come out in like 2 seconds with them off. definitely delete all those vacuum AIR/EGR lines, cleans up the engine bay and makes working on the car easier in those areas. i had the same reaction when i started up my c5 for the first time after my header install, nice job
Very nicely done and it sounds great! The car looks fantastic too. I had the same reaction when I did my header install on my 99’ C5. Just wait though it gets even louder with the cam install if you plan on doing it. I did mine back in February this year with all supporting mods, 243 heads, and ls6 intake.
My setup is similar slp loudmouth , kooks headers and x pipe , really loud . I just did a cam and heads 😳 it's so much louder now holy hell I actually thought about mufflers again , then changed mind hahahah
One thing I haven’t seen you post about on the C5 is the traction control. Have you had any issues with it? Or is that something that maybe the previous owner had replaced or rebuilt at some point…
Great job. Love that you take on these tasks and show us the good, the bad and the ugly. All the best to you and your family, for a safe and happy holiday season.
I'll ask since you cant tell this from video. How much difference in noise will you say it is from going from complete stock exhaust-> SLP loudmouth, and from already having the LSP installed to now going headers+x pipe as well?
Here's my two cents of advice having done a lot of headers in the past 50 years in driveways and garages on many different sports cars. Number one get at least a basic repair manual like a Haynes and read the parts relating to removing exhaust manifolds and exhaust systems before you start so that you don't have to be guessing about basic things like how many oxygen sensors there are and where they're located. Number two get that car much higher off the ground. Number three buy a lot of WD-40 with the snake around and point metal nozzles and soak every fastener a week. And my recent addition to what needs to be done is to watch every RU-vid video that exists about doing the job you were going to do with a critical eye and picking out the best tips from each one.
i broke the coolant temp sensor doing plugs and wires, got a new ac delco one from advanced auto, Pulled the old one and quickly put in the new one, Minimal coolant loss lol
@@DriveHub awesome! Thank you so much, I will for sure! Is there going to have to be cutting like shown in the video? Or does that depend on how your own personal car?
Good looking exhaust Jake !! I can’t wait to see more of the car on the street with the upgrade. Oh yeah… I was a professional mechanic at your age, and believe me, we all run into little hiccups like you did, all the time… We were just really good at hiding it 😉
Good vid only thing I’d say is if you think there’s potential for bigger mods like heads/cam striker to 383 and/or FI and/or meth etc consider going w/ 1-7/8” vs 1-3/4” initially
i’m sad i just put my stock exhaust back on, i was straight piped like you Jake (video on my channel). And btw it’s headers then the mid pipe then the axle back.
No cats and no mufflers. Any issues with state inspections? Deleting the rear 02 sensors require programming out the MIL. They are to tell how the cats are working. The front O2's are the important ones for the car to learn air/fuel mixture.
Hey bro.....did it cause any codes (or lights on instrument panel )🤔.....? And how much HP gain do you expect (which isn't as important as THE RUMBLE 🤣🤣🤤) just curious....🤘
How are you passing emissions without cats? I’m looking to buy this C6, it’s straight piped. And was wondering what would be easier, getting new cats which are pricey r something else?
get it tuned and you should be good, i just recently passed emissions here in maryland with no cats on my c5 thanks to the tune. if theres a check engine light then you probably wont pass
@@wackysamurai1583 pretty much, otherwise a check engine light will eventually pop up and you wont pass. took my car about two week for the cel to pop up after removing my cats so make sure you have proof its tuned before buying it.
@@yungtooli so the car is in Colorado, and I live in Utah. I’d make sure it’s tuned, take it to get emissions and do the paperwork to transfer to Utah just in case so it shows it passes. Thanks man! I’ve never dealt with tunes or mods that require a tune so I’m still learning haha
That AIR system isn’t too hard to take off. To get the passenger side off, you will have to remove the intake, or cut the pipe on the passenger side back corner like Dave did on his channel yellowvette04.
Thanks for publishing what its really like to install headers.... Couple of hours they say.... You probably want to get mufflers. Your going to be a ticket magnet (bunch of young kids in a way too loud car). Besides, you want 3" pipes all the way through.
I think you could have tucked both clamps if you would have cut one side of the new exhaust shorter, and cut the other pipe from the old exhaust longer so the cuts would have been staggered. Great video otherwise!
