I took my Saab 9-3 Turbo X with 173,000 miles on it to Black Market Racing to have it dyno'd! Some big things are coming for this car in the future, so stay tuned!
numbers were low for multiple reasons: heat, XWD, etc...take this all with a grain of salt

Hi, been watching since the beginning being a Saab 93 Aero owner myself, I love what your doing and the way the channel is going. Just had to say pls be careful running AFR 13.0 is not wise, I would hate to see you damage such a brilliant engine. Keep the great content coming. So jealous of the Turbo X, very rare here in the UK

Quick question. I just had a auto tun stage one installed I bought the connecter and tun in a package. I have a drop in k&m drop in air. I had bought a magna-flow exhaust and put on a glass pipe as a resonator. I live in Cali so I can’t do the 3 down pipe. Could I do maybe a 3 catback or turbo exhaust so I could get to a stage 2 or 3 tune. If you have any suggestions or links to exhaust I could use I’d would be appreciated. Thanks man you rock.
@AutoAutopsy
@AutoAutopsy 5 лет назад
A catless downpipe? They are not allowed in AZ either. There is a part you can buy to fool the o2 sensor into thinking there’s a cat so you won’t get a CEL and will pass emissions. Email or DM me and I’ll get you a link for it

Nice! Well basics would be an exhaust, intake, and intercooler for starters
@MassiveTrackHunter

The raggedy line is most likely due to Saab Engine Management's constant adjustments to mix, timing and fuel. New coil packs and double iridium plugs should get your upper RPM power back. Certainly did on my '05 ARC Vert. Was not mis-firing, but power would drop off above 5k. Now pulls hard to redline with 190k miles still idling smooth as silk. Good luck. Btw - LOVE THE X!!!

Hey Jacob, nice run! Those are the numbers I figured you'd hit. My guess is that you're going to upgrade the intercooler, air intake, downpipe, and midpipe, then get it tuned. Thanks for the good video and thank god those exhaust tips are fixed! haha

As much as I have heard dynos might not actually tell you the real power, they all are very different with many settings and variables. Most useful they are when you use the same dyno to see difference in horsepower after modifications.

I'm an older person and the reason we went to get horsepower measured on the dynamometer was to know what the horsepower was compared to the amount of power coming off the tires. I had a 1969 Mustang GT with 375 horsepower. but when I brought it to the Dynomometer it showed only 294 horsepower. so since you had 220 on the horsepower that must mean you had about 300 or 280hp right from the engine, the way the horsepower was always measured.
@AutoAutopsy
@AutoAutopsy 5 лет назад
Yep, pretty accurate when you account for drivetrain loss!

I would have bought a Saab, if it hadn't gone bust a few years ago, I was worried about founding parts, it was back in '14. I decided to buy a 38 000 mile S60 B5244t5 Volvo (2.4 engine, with M66 manual) and tuned it from 260 metric horses to 310, it gets around 300 effectively. FWD, it's better not to have more, and one has to be careful in the wet. 110 000 miles now with the Volvo These Saabs are beauties! Congrats.

He's not lying lol... Healthy running 9-3 Viggen's or 9-5 Aero's routinely put down anywhere 215-230whp stock and weight 700/400lbs lighter respectivly. I'd put down pay checks that if you dragged raced your 9-5 Aero against the TX from a 30mph roll the Aero would win

Any 2.8 would gap a 9-5 aero if you put same mods on them. I have experience with both cars. Of course the FWD car will have an advantage in a roll race, but try beating the TX off the line to 60; not happening
@mnp2169
@mnp2169 5 лет назад
I'd try and see if you can go back to the stock tune to be honest (for now) running lean can be a little dangerous. If I'm correct, a richer afr helps prevent detonation and helps keep the cylinders cool and lubricated (might need a fact check there). Going back to stock might keep the engine healthier while not losing much power (since you're only at 220 hp anyway). Though if you're planning on changing stuff and getting it retuned soon anyway, maybe it's fine to keep it where it's at for a while.
@AutoAutopsy

A question from someone that will eventually get a 2.8 Saab, isn’t the 2.8 meant to be used only with 98 octane + (EU, 93 I think it is for USA) Does it create any issues using regular gas in this engine? (91 USA, 95 EU)

91 AKI is pretty much equal to 95 RON, 93 AKI is more like 98 RON. The B284, especially tuned, loves high octane fuel so try to find 93 AKI or higher. And go to a shop that has proper cooling in the dyno. Those "leaf blowers" are not really sufficient.

I noticed that my TurboX is much faster after running it hard a few times. Test your 0-60 after the car is warmed up.. drive it a little aggressively for 10 minutes and then try the 0-60 again. You'll see a big difference. I want to go Vtuner Stage 0, the numbers are "told" to give the TurboX up to 400 torque and over 300 hp but I also heard that some people put their X on a dyno and didnt see any inscrease on numbers😕

That has to be the crappiest stage 1 ever. Put the latest version of the original software in and I bet you it will do better. Making a B284 run lean is actually quite impressive (in a bad way) and really shows that the tuner was not good at ME9.6 tuning. Here's a run with MapTun Stage 2, which is not a lot different from what your car should be showing (stage 2 being only catback exhaust). The dfference to a stage 1 is ony 15hp and 5Nm at the crank. www.garaget.org/?car=212850&image=2117204

Yeahhh...we'll see with the new tune...
@patriksonestad8208
@patriksonestad8208 5 лет назад
The B284 suffers from some parts being under dimensioned. So, you need a better intercooler, better exhaust manifolds and bigger turbo if you want to get some serious power. Tip: try to find a crashed ng9-5 Aero6. Buy the manifolds and the turbo, that will get you quite a bit in combination with a good IC without costing you an arm and a leg.

At the crank. His stock is 280 at the crank, plus looks like it has a bad tune on it too which won't help. You lose a lot through the drivetrain so the gears, drive and propshafts etc all use up power when you spin them. Therefore the power to the wheels is usually significantly less than what's advertised as they almost always list the engine power not the wheel power.

@fomalhaut86

I hope so :) I assume that the dyno results aren't normalized so It's just raw data? If so, even compensating for the ambient conditions (like air intake temperature) would give You 10 to 15 bhp more. Not to mention a proper octane fuel (another 10 - 15 bhp more). Sad thing about Saabs -> air too hot and they don't go. Same with fuel -> octane too low and it reverts to "knock map" and does not go:) It's a hot summer where I live, so I can feel the difference in power output for myself (drops 10 bhp easily - or more). :)
