That's right --- I'm done ... I quit ... I'm not doing it anymore!
I'm never going to sit on the ground like an animal ever again! Sorry ‪@KyleHatesHiking‬, I've switched my stripes ... I love having a backpacking chair!

I too have picked up a camp chair, and I like it... but I don't love it. As a guy that stands at 6'3", I really wish my chair was taller and had a bit of a back. I know Helinox has the Sunsetter Chair for us tall folks, but I don't like the idea of carrying a 3 lb chair. I picked up the REI Flexlite Air Chair, but it's low to the ground, and the strut goes front to back, rather than left to right, and it doesn't feel as solid as others. But, I picked it up at an REI garage sale for $20, so I can't complain too much. As an aside, I recently dropped about 30 pounds and on my last hike, I discovered that the waistbelt on my pack no can no longer adequately tighten on my hips. I popped my Z-seat between my belly and the buckle, and voila! Problem solved! It doesn't always stay in place, but it was better than letting the entire weight of the pack fall on my shoulders! Most of my chair friends still carry a butt pad, and will lay it in the seat when they sit, for a bit of insulation.
@JayMorrisonOutdoors
@JayMorrisonOutdoors 2 года назад
At that price, might as well try it out, right?! Good deal! Love the ingenuity for "fixing" your loose hip belt issue --- now the sit pad fits into the "multiple purpose" category for gear, making it that much more awesome ;) Thanks for watching!
@bigironbackpacking5903
@bigironbackpacking5903 2 года назад
The butt pad thing for insulation is a great idea .... I'm 6ft and one thing that helped me feel like the chair was higher is using the rocker chair attachment for helinox, it makes it so you can lean back without breaking the legs on the chair and the legs on your body feel much less cramped.

I am so glad I saw this- I have had that chair in my wishlist forever- they also make ground sheets for it if you didn’t see that on Amazon.. so mud, sand, etc- you won’t sink. Love this channel, I literally found you today bc of John Kelly & I subbed immediately. I’m glad you love that chair! It’s acceptable for me to purchase now lol.

@@JayMorrisonOutdoors anytime- I love that you did the whole mental health minute series- that’s essentially why I love camping & getting outdoors- plus I am vicariously living thru all of you RU-vid content creators while you’re all out on the trails and I’m waiting for the right sale and right time to grab upgraded gear so I can get out there once the weather is a little bit better here in MA. 🤣 thank you for all of your help and advice & the work it takes to edit & publish these videos! It’s much appreciated!

@@JayMorrisonOutdoors I have an addictive personality- my friend mentioned she’s selling her gear so she can move & then she’s going to start over getting gear when she finds a place to live- I’m like “you know better than to tell me you’re selling your gear- it’s brand new and unused for the most part- no. Not interested!” But, strangely enough- she has found Osprey multi-day packs WITH TAGS still on, at the thrift shop- so.. maybe I’ll have to hunt those places. The gear struggle is far too real!

I've started to (gulp!) use a bear canister. I got a Bearikade because while it's hideously expensive, it's the lightest option. It weighs about the same as your chair, makes a nifty stool to sit on, and lets me spend more time in camp sitting around because I'm not messing around trying to heave a line up a tree. Of course, everyone has their own luxury items. My load-out always includes a budget of two pounds of none-of-your-business.
@JayMorrisonOutdoors
@JayMorrisonOutdoors 2 года назад
LOL I love the "two pounds of none-of-your-business" ... hehe that's great! I've said before that the bear canister is nice as a seat beyond the other benefits it provides! Thanks for watching!

Haha I caught no end of hell from another backpacker about my camp chair (too much weight, too bulky, etc). Until we got to camp and they had to put their z-seat on a wet log. They wouldn't even look at my chair, the seat stationed all those dry inches above the wet ground. I'm glad you found one that works for you
@JayMorrisonOutdoors
@JayMorrisonOutdoors 2 года назад
LOL this was 100% the situation that happened to me during our PA trip! When my Z Seat slipped off the wet log and I went down with it, I looked at @bigiron and he immediately said, "this is what is going to get you into a backpacking chair, isn't it?!"
@itsmorefunoutdoors4603
@itsmorefunoutdoors4603 2 года назад
Lol chairs are awesome, when practical! I've used a z seat and a chair...depending on the trip...for years. Never tried trekology's but I have a couple tables they make and they are solid, really impressed!
@JayMorrisonOutdoors
@JayMorrisonOutdoors 2 года назад
Yea -- I think having the option of either (or both I guess) the z-seat and the chair is going to make a lot of trips even better!

I've transitioned to an almost full-time chair guy too. In most circumstances it is WELL worth it!
@JayMorrisonOutdoors
@JayMorrisonOutdoors 2 года назад
It's hard to argue against it now ... and the fact my pack weight has dropped so much over the last couple of years, that even with the chair, I'm still well under where I was for my first backpacking trips! Crazy
@cribbage

I've done no research on this at all, but I suspect a lot of the anti-chair people are younger and probably in better shape than a lot of us. Love my chair, never leave home without it!

+1 for the Trekology seat. I went through essentially the same progression- the extra weight/space is well worth a bit more comfort at camp. I went through a couple other moderately-priced chairs before settling on that one. It's tough to beat the packability/weight/cost.

Do what you wanna do. You are the one that has to carry it. There is a lot of snobbery in the hiking world. My pack tore once and this dude said, “if you had an osprey pack like mine they would repair that for free”. My reply, “unless they air drop in here with a sewing kit it doesn’t really matter much does it”. Screw hiking snobs, I’d carry a lazy boy if I wanted it.

hehe -- thanks! Honestly, it only took a couple of times being miserable for me to change my tune. The chair is definitely comfy and I'm glad it's part of my kit, but it's 100% staying home when I go out on the Long Trail this year ;) Thanks for watching!

Sometimes you just need that release in your lower back that comes from sitting in a chair. You don't get that from sitting on the ground -- or even on a yoga mat.
