I find it humorous when someone says they had a great time but don't remember part of the evening. It also drives me nuts when someone says they need a drink to have fun. They've conditioned themselves that way. When I quit drinking I was determined have fun without alcohol. 💪🏻😂💃🏻

This is literally my story also. I quit 4.5 years ago and never looked back. It’s not a good look, but also it was so normal to binge drink in the 2000s and we didn’t have social media, so many of us never learned healthy relationships. Festivals sober are amazing! You’ll know when you’re ready. You have to relearn having fun in a way…

The older I get, the less I enjoy alcohol. It absolutely wrecks me for days if I even have more than a glass of wine with dinner. Also, I’m coming from the perspective of living in the states so it may be a cultural difference, but I would argue the excessive drinking, blacking out and getting physically sick so often would qualify as having a “problem” with alcohol. But it might just be a cultural difference between our countries as to what really qualifies as alcoholism. The binge drinking, party girl style alcoholism isn’t the typical look of depressive all day every day alcoholics but it is considered alcoholism here nonetheless. It sounds like you are much better off without it so kudos for recognizing a need to quit and thank you for making this video! Surely it will be relatable to so many people.

I'm 18 months free from that poison, I would drink for the wrong reasons and trying to drown out my problems. Microdosing has helped me the most on moving away from it as well as self reflection. Finding and listening to Jordan Peterson was a big help too. I try to spread the word to others around me about what it does to the body but nothing really came of it. I also can't stand being around drunk people either. Congratulations to everyone thats made the hard decision to leave it behind.

I went off alcohol 7 years ago and noticed a few things. Fewer, if any, extremes in my mood- especially negative emotions. Better sleep, clearer thinking, instantly picking up on co-worker's signs on drinking, less sick days from work, less sick in general, a loss of party friends. I feared not being able to find a relationship thinking that my not drinking would be seen negatively. I found that i dated more after i quit and met quality women. More importantly i found the woman i would marry. She had been cutting down on drinking before we met so it worked out hand in glove. I lot of what we fear isn't true. Been 7 years and i don't miss it. I don't miss hangovers, brainfog, and ideas that seemed good at the time. Being alcohol free has allowed me to be present in the lives of others- and that's priceless. LauraTry- thanks for sharing.

Great video Laura. I too have been on an alcohol break for 18 months. I am finding less and less reasons to ever drink alcohol again, even when I do have the fleeting thought that I'd like the sensation of 'relief', and am tempted by that well-worn (false) belief that alcohol is the only way to have it. Since I have quit it has massively improved my sleep, made even the worst of anxious feelings a mere trifle, improved not only my motivation, but my initiation too. Now when I want to get sh*t done, I can more easily just get on and start. My mental processing speed has gone through the roof. Consequently, both my occupational performance and lifestyle have improved. All of these changes were gradual from the outset, but really accelerated after around 9 months for me. Good luck on your onward journey!

Good on ya LT! I learned early on in life that alcohol wasn’t for me. Never liked the taste nor did I like the loss of control. I just tell people I’m happy and love my life…I don’t need to alter my sense of reality with alcohol. That shuts them up and they go away……I don’t like to hang out with drinkers anyway. I’d rather be outside hiking, biking, kayaking, etc. No matter what others tell you, alcohol doesn’t mix with that kind of fun. It’s like “they” pressure you to drink so you lower yourself down to their level. It makes them feel validated. Well, I don’t care! It’s my life and I’ve done pretty well without alcohol!!! 😊❤😊

I’ve just passed the 2000 days mark. Much like you I gave up for my mental & physical health, I used to get awful anxiety after drinking. I find the "oh, you can have just one, surely?" comments the most interesting. I reply, "I can have as many as I want. I just don't want any." I like to make the distinction between permission and choice. People seem to think it's a permission thing - surely you're "allowed" to have one/two/whatever. I like to point out that, actually, it's nothing to do with that. It's a choice I've made. They find that quite difficult to comprehend I find.

Congratulations, Laura. I quit alcohol in my 20’s because it didn’t make me feel good and I realized that using alcohol was detrimental to achieving my goals in life. That was almost 40 years ago and I’m so grateful! My wife elected to taper off and then quit after I made my decision. We were fortunate to not have had a dependency on drink, so quitting was an easy thing to do. It has an effect on your friend selection. We gradually grew distant from friends who drank and attracted new friends who don’t imbibe.

After 40 years of steady drinking, although I only intended to cut back on my 'bottle a night' evening wine habit, I found that I was OK without. This was the culmination of many months of failed attempts to 'cut back', reading self help books and after enlisting support from an online group of fellow alcohol dependents (Soberistas). I realised that I was one of those people that had trouble stopping drinking so logical conclusion was to avoid it completely. Thanks Alan Carr for that insight. A lot of friends and colleagues were surprised. The crunch moment came when a doctor was about to prescribe me antidepressants and I said, no thanks but how about if I stop drinking instead. They said it was one of the best things I could do for my health. So I did and no looking back. Best decision ever. Great book for me was Gabor Mate's 'Realm of Hungry Ghosts' (on addiction).

Cant say i have ever missed it in over 15 years. A cold glass or coke with ice hits the spot 😅. I can enjoy everything with a good mental state. And if something bad happens you just gotta roll with it and go through the emotions 😊 I agree with the society pressure 💯

I quite drinking last Halloween because it was eroding my mental healt. I really don't go out much and when I do my friends & family are super supportive. I have found that I feel a bit odd when I'm around people who are drinking a lot and I'm not. They look silly & put of control. No thank you. I would rather sit outdoors in front of a fire watching the stars. Laura, a thoughtful masterclass on alcohol. Every point hit a note with me, literally everything. I have been alcohol free for decades but the one thing that haunts me is seeing so clearly the addiction of others. So sad when even smart people can't make the jump to at least acknowledging their addiction. My universal challenge to blow away the "noise" around alcohol, is once you can go without alcohol then you can prove your not an addict. Keep doing the RU-vid you, you are an inspiration.

I've been sober for some years now myself, had to quit due to illness which left my alcohol tolerance to basically zero. At the time I was "busy" being ill, but as I started to get better I realized that I didn't really miss getting drunk at all. In part I think I just outgrew it as I matured. But also I struggled with low mood and some depressions when I was younger and used alcohol to sooth myself. I think I quit alcohol almost a year ago. I did it because I had so many physical goals (staying in shape, running, strength training and just eating better) and alcohol never seemed to be something that helped me to reach those goals. I used to drink it to loosen up and feel better about myself in social situations. Now, after finding my faith and landing my current job managing a boutique style gym with some of my best friends, I no longer need the alcohol to feel good about myself and I have really blossomed into the person I always knew I could be. Will I ever drink again? I'm hoping not to, but I'm also not going to beat myself over it, but I am leaning towards, probably not.

At some point alcohol is too hard for most older bodies to tolerate, and older friends understand. Hang in there! 😂

Hello Laura, I’m happy that we’re on the same boat. Sober from 1.5.2022. I drink the same way like you but 5 years ago I started drink glass or two of wine to cope with my emotions and stress. I quit and live is better. I’m still emotional eater sometimes, but I try to do another things to work with my emotions and stress like running, meditating, breathing etc. Thank you for this video.

Congrats on your goals ,This is awesome!!! I have never liked any type of alcohol so I guess I am lucky. I do how ever like going out with my husband, family and friends whom all drink. They are all really nice when it's at some ones home they all know I don't drink and it's never pushed onto me. When we go out to a bar or an event. I deal with others who don't really know me and do push. But by saying theses words. (Oh no thank you , I am the designated driver for tonight. ) They will leave me alone after that. And at most bars that will get me all the free water or soda I want. in a nice glass. 😊

I was fortunate to stop drinking a couple years back after some (demonetizable 😅) experiences which made me far more aware of both my mental and physical state & how I disliked the effects it had on both more than I enjoyed the temporary effects. My wife still enjoys a drink. I've never preached stopping to anyone, it's just a personal choice, but it's helped reduce her consumption which is win win 😊

Interesting to hear everyone, I have a friend who has been off alcohol for nearly a year and he loves it. I stopped for 3 month to see what all the fuss was about and really didn’t see any benefits, nothing got better I.e sleep, mood, relationships etc. I don’t have a problem with alcohol though and really enjoy having a drink here and there so maybe that’s why. I cleared up my diet and went meat based for 3 month except 1 day a week on a separate test to see what the fuss was about, boy that was amazing for my health and training, never felt better.

Wonderful journey, Laura! You have all my encouragement to stay your course. You mention that your friends can drink more because they don't have the 'depression issue', it would appear though that they do need validation, ie feel not good enough or else, why put you knowingly to the test instead of showing loving support🙂? Love your way of telling the story❤

Hi Laura this is a great video. I'm 42 years and never really liked drinking even as a teen. Just struggle with the social side of it very tiring. But after seeing this I'm going in hard with this one.

I’m on 1055 days alcohol free as of today. My reason for drinking was to get away from being me, but unfortunately I was always there in the morning, and feeling more anxious and depressed because of the alcohol. The hardest part since stopping has been putting up with me all the time and never being able to escape. However once you get over that little issue (therapy needed), and learn to just be, it’s then easy to not drink alcohol. So do it, give up. (And well done Laura, thanks for the videos 😀)

well done! I started with dry January a few years ago and it just sort of continued. Watching Huberman's episode about alcohol solidified my feelings. I still have an occasional beer and I do miss wine, but the awful feeling after having even just 1 glass just isn't worth it.

Well done, Laura. I gave up 1.5 years ago and feel so much better. Waking up in the morning without that thirsty feeling, and not exactly a hangover but feeling just slightly below par...that's such a great thing. Also, even when I was drinking alcohol, almost always a glass of wine at home, after the first few sips I started realising I felt worse immediately after those sips, than I did before. There was nothing about the wine that made it worth drinking, apart from the thought of sitting down with a glass of wine. I don't ever think about drinking these days. It's just gone. Out of my life. I do sometimes think, ooh yes, it would be so nice to enjoy a glass of wine in a beautiful bar, on holiday or whatever, but I know the alcohol just wouldn't make any situation more pleasant, because even a small amount makes me feel crap. Xmas Day, even, I didn't think about it! I got to Boxing Day before even thinking to myself...oh, I didn't drink any alcohol yesterday. I can hardly believe this is me! This has been such a learning curve because - at 58 - it took me 40 years of drinking about 2 to 3 bottles of wine a week to realise or, at least, to admit it to myself! Thanks for another thoughtful and interesting video. PS I only ever drink sparkling water when I go out!

I gave up alcohol new years day 2023 and love it! I realised after doing a mental health first aid course how I use alcohol to help me cope with life (I have also suffered from depression) and decided to give it up. My partner unexpectedly did too. We're now very used to going out and being alcohol free.

Yay! Smirnoff Ice! Those were the days!!! I mostly gave it up more than 10 years ago, still have the occasional one drink but no more big nights out. If I have one glass of wine I know about it in the morning, I think I drank my lifetime allowance of alcohol in the first half of my life. I don't regret all those boozy nights, but definitely did the right thing by moving on from it. Chili Heatwave Doritos, on the other hand, are eternal.

Great topic and fun video to watch. I like a beer from time to time. And a sip of rhum once a month. One glass of alcohol is fine the second or third makes me sad so I never go past 2 glasses. I often don’t drink in social gatherings. I order a cup of tea while others are on cocktails. You should absolutely do what you want!

First off, Congratulations on the milestone. I rarely drink and am enjoying life a lot more. I really connceted with the part you said about losing half a week from one night of drinking. That's what stops me from drinking more, I just don't see the upside anymore

First and foremost, congratulations on your 1000 days being alcohol free. 25 years alcohol free here from across the pond. Yeah, it’s a tough journey to begin and go through. I lost friends and even a 20 year marriage because I decided to have a better life. I can literally tell you life will continue to get better every day! And the reward for taking care of yourself is priceless as well. Yeah, you will have days when you look back, but those are just moments… and you can get through them by doing something you are compassionate about like exercising or art or music. Cheers to your new beginning! 🎉😊❤
