Wow, that is a big step. Thanks for sharing it with us. Jamie Ped Vlogs went through some similar changes a while back. I admire your and his ambitious natures. I sort of fell into a job that turned into a career more than I had planned for it. I quickly ended up leading the software development side of things. I choose the platform and tools we use. I design and implement all the features. I have free time for R&D to experiment with new technologies. It is a small company and have a significant and growing equity stake in the company. This keeps me pretty well anchored. I probably could have made more money if I had moved around earlier in my career. However I have a lot of latitude to shape things where I am and have a literal feeling of ownership over things. I don't think I would have done things differently for myself. In my own time I keep trying to learn new things by experimenting with micro-controllers as a hobby. I just started learning assembly for the PIC. It doesn't have an immediate practical use for me, but it is just fun to explore things on a low level. I wish you very well on your new job. I am excited for you. When the time is right you should consider doing a live stream with Jamie Ped Vlogs talking about employment transitions - from school to a first job and then from job to job. I think something like that would have real value to your older audiences as well as young people who will one day be making those transitions. Jamie Ped Vlogs would be an excellent person to collaborate with again and I think he has a very good perspective on this subject matter. He tried a few jobs before finding one that made him happy. He seems to have done well for himself.

Hahah, we are in the same situation! My current job doesn't allow me to improve anymore and it has become stale and boring. I don't get any sense of accomplishment anymore. I feel like everyone around me is improving and actually getting somewhere, while I stay in place. I just cannot live like this anymore. I will take a huge risk and quit my job. I don't know if my next job will be better or worse, but I absolutely need to make a change in my life! Thank you for inspiring me do take a step in the right direction!

Quitting your job is a brave move, but your thinking and reasons for moving resonate with me. I also love how clearly you've articulated the 5 things which are important to get out of a job. It (and your approach to life in general as I've seen over many vlogs) tells me that you've got your head on straight, and that you'll do great no matter what happens. All the best! P.S. If you could talk about your thinking / reasoning behind big / difficult decisions (like this - in the future as applicable) that you might come across, that would be awesome. Your clarity of thought is like a nice best practice guide to life :)

My first software development job has made me think about quitting the Industry altogether. I liked learning about all the CS stuff during my degree but I've also been doing high performance sports stuff during it. The new job is just so one dimensional. I go to work and sit at a desk for 8 hours 5 days a week. That physically cannot get me where I want to be. I feel like it's dragging me down and holding me back from what I really want to achieve in life. As good of a job as it is, it just isn't offering enough non-cs related personal development. There's lads in my job who love coding and that's cool for them they get to do it every day and have a great time. I'd rather be putting that kind of time into one of my sports though. The job is good for money etc, but it just makes you feel so bad about yourself every day. I don't even feel like a new company would really be much better either as I do get to swim on my lunch breaks here(which is somewhat of a compromise..?). Yeah anyway, just can't believe I spent 4 years doing this degree rather than putting it into qualifying for the Olympics or anything else like that you can think of.

+ballyoulsterboy Even though I'm not some extremely athletic person myself, I can totally relate to that. Sitting at a desk in front of four computer screens (I'm a network operator), only to get home and sit in front of my laptop for a couple more hours cos apart from your work you need to learn new stuff on your own all the time, like new programming languages or foreign human languages, not to mention that most people nowadays get their entertainment through computers as well and sadly I'm not exception to that. All in all, it feels like being enslaved to the technology, rather than liberated by it.

Okay, so this is a big step. You are wise to have a plan B, namely the position in September which still may pan out, but still. With your five point evaluation, re: work ethics, stick to your guns. You are a bright young man, and your future shines brilliantly ahead of you. My advice, since you are free-lancing, pick up more assignments, and on branding yourself. I speak first hand. It's great.

I'd say the most important things in order of most to least are: 1. Work/Life Balance 2. Environment/Coworkers/Manager 3. Money and Benefits 4. Interest 5. Maneuverability in the company

Comforting to know I am not the only one and thought the same way. I just quit my job that I have worked for four years in environmental consulting. I was sad when I gave my resignation with the same reason; after my two weeks ended I was glad that I left even if this decision doesn't turned out right or sound to others. It was becoming difficult to get up in the morning and my weekends were wrecked thinking of upcoming projects. I have job lined up that will start in a few weeks. Sometimes being jobless is better than doing something that disheartening. Everyone is allowed to change his or her heart.

Straight out of Uni, money is important, but becomes less and less important as things go on. In fact I'd argue its the least. If you love what you do, and stick with it, challenge it (maybe more that 2 years) then you become valuable to the company and the money will come. Less portable values, but more valuable.

I spent 4 years doing the same kind of front end work at a company I really should have left after at most 2 years and believe me once you have these sorts of doubts they only get worse. Luv your vid's and this one in partic' You're at where I was 10,000 yrs ago. Been in IT since I was 18. (Computer Programmer, but get paid more for the same work when you call yourself a Software Engineer.) Programming jobs all over my native London. I also changed jobs every 1-3 yrs. (I liked the challenge of getting another job. I'd even go for interviews for fun with no intention of taking the job to see what they'd offer...weird eh?) Then someone was recruiting for coders for Silicon Valley, CA. I was 28, so went along to the hotel to see what was up. Anyway, 3 weeks later, I was flying into San Francisco Airport. Since then, worked all over the Bay Area and travelled throughout the US and Canada, visiting every darn place you can think of, even towns with one traffic light and one motel. Tons of opening in the SF Bay Area if you fancy working in the US for while.

Appreciate this video is quite old now, but I wanted to comment on the point you made about salary being a key factor in job satisfaction. It's worth looking into Frederick Herzberg's "Motivation Hygiene Theory" which classes salary as something that doesn't motivate, but prevents job dissatisfaction. Similarly, it's also worth reading up on Edward Deci's work on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and how money doesn't meet the 3 psychological needs people have (to feel autonomous, to feel competent and to feel a relation with others). Lastly, if you're still not convinced, take a look at Dan Ariely's experiments with an Indian village or Prof Dean Mobbs work on "choking on money". Hope the new job has worked out for you.
